To Detach is to send an Xyz Material attached to an Xyz Monster to the Graveyard in order to activate the effect of the Xyz Monster.
Since Xyz Materials are not considered to be on the field in the OCG, effects which activate when a monster is sent from the field to the Graveyard do not activate. In the TCG however, they are considered to be on the field so effects such as Sangan will activate when detached.
Currently, there is no effect in the TCG/OCG that re-attaches a used Xyz material, neither is it known if its even possible. An anime only card does this, hinting that it might become possible doing this in the future.
