Tribute

Tribute ("Sacrifice" in the OCG) is usually a way of Voluntarily discarding a card from the field to the Graveyard, often used to unlock a card effect, or to perform a Summon.

• For example, Exiled Force can be tributed to destroy one monster on the field. It can use its effect on the same turn it is summoned.
• Monsters are Tributed for a Tribute Summon.
• Ritual Monsters require their corresponding Ritual Spell Card and a tribute of monsters whose total Level equals the Level of the Ritual Monster in order for it to be summoned to the field. This is considered a Special Summon.

Monsters used in a Tribute Summon are treated slightly differently, and some cards speciflcally prohibit other cards from being used as Tribute for a Tribute Summon. Sheep Tokens from Scapegoat are a notable example.
