Destroyed by Battle is exactly what it sounds like, and is when a monster is destroyed in battle. This applies to many cards, and is usually required for something to happen. Good examples of cards that work when monsters are destroyed in battle are Mystic Tomato, Great Dezard, and Hero Signal.

If a monster is destroyed by a card Effect, then it is not in battle and the effect doesn't apply. So if Shining Angel is destroyed by Fissure, Shining Angel's effect will not activate.
