"Ice Barrier" (氷結界 Hyōkekkai) is an archetype consisting of WATER monsters resembling, for the most part, famous concepts, figures, warriors, and mythological beings of different Asian cultures. Their team symbol resembles a hexagonal snowflake.
They focus on stymieing the opponent's attackers with their defensive monsters and plenty of Spell/Trap Cards to compensate for their inability to maintain hand advantage. The ace monsters of this archetype are the three dragons of the Ice Barrier (namely "Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier", "Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier", and "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier"-including its retrained counterpart), and the generals of the Ice Barrier ("General Raiho of the Ice Barrier", "General Gantala of the Ice Barrier", "General Grunard of the Ice Barrier", and "General Wayne of the Ice Barrier").

Playing style
The "Ice Barrier" archetype consists of a large amount of Main Deck Effect Monsters, several Synchro Monsters that act as boss monsters, and some archetypal Spell/Trap support. The archetype's playstyle is roughly focused on summoning multiple different Main Deck "Ice Barrier" monsters, combining their individual protection effects to handicap the opponent, and ideally summon its Synchro boss monsters to break the opponent's board and push for game. However, the archetype had historically lacked consistency cards, lacked synergy between its card effects, had no swarming capabilities, and its individual protection effects are not strong enough to sustain the deck as the game's power level increased.

The "Ice Barrier" archetype consists of a large amount of Main Deck Effect Monsters, several Synchro Monsters that act as boss monsters, and some archetypal Spell/Trap support. The archetype's playstyle is focused on Summoning multiple different Main Deck "Ice Barrier" monsters, combining their individual protection effects to handicap the opponent, and Synchro Summon its boss monsters to break the opponent's board and push for game. After multiple waves of support, the latest iteration of the Deck can perform this quite consistently.
Structure Deck: Ice Barrier of the Frozen Prison, and cards added after the Structure Deck, gave the archetype some much needed support cards that adresses some of its issues with consistency and swarming.
+

* "Revealer" can summon an "Ice Barrier" Tuner monster directly from the Deck, setting up the summons of the archetype's Synchro Monsters. It can also banish itself from GY to substitute for other "Ice Barrier" monsters' discard costs.
+
"Lancea, Dragonic Ancestor of the Ice Spirit Mountain" is a Level 10 Synchro Monster that can Summon an "Ice Barrier" monster from the hand, Deck, GY or Extra Deck up to twice per turn, when the opponent Special Summons a monster. This card can single-handedly enable the lockdown effects of nearly every "Ice Barrier" monster, and thus Summoning it is the focus of the modern play style of the archetype. It also has a second effect, which Special Summons an "Ice Barrier" monster from the Extra Deck (by treating it as a Synchro Summon) when it leaves the field due to the opponent's card. This can be combined with "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" or "Trishula, Zero Dragon of the Ice Barrier", to banish the opponent's cards. By combining both effects, "Lancea" alone puts a lot of pressure on the opponent, especially when combined with the right "Ice Barrier" monsters. "Lancea" can be Summoned by many methods (as seen below).
* "Hexa Spirit" is a Tuner that can send an "Ice Barrier" monster from the Deck to the GY and modulate its own levels, enabling indirect searches via the GY, and also enables more Synchro options.
+

* "General Wayne" is a Level 5 extender that can be Special Summoned from the hand if you control an "Ice Barrier" monster and your opponent controls a monster, and searches an "Ice Barrier" Spell/Trap when summoned.
+
Among the monsters that can be Summoned by "Lancea", "General Raiho of the Ice Barrier" is one of the best targets, since it forces the opponent to discard a card in order to resolve their monster effects activated on the field, and it does not require the player to control another "Ice Barrier" monster. "Georgius, Swordsman of the Ice Barrier" is another great target, since it can prevent the opponent from activating monster effects in the GY, and also Summon a second "Ice Barrier" monster from the hand or GY in order to turn on its effect. "Warlock of the Ice Barrier" acts as an "Anti-Spell Fragrance", preventing both players from activating Spell Cards before Setting them, and forcing them to wait a turn before doing so.
* "Speaker" can Special Summon herself from the hand if the player controls an "Ice Barrier" monster, and can banish herself from the GY to summon a Token.
+

* "Zuijin" can Tribute itself to Special Summon a Level 5 or higher "Ice Barrier" monster from hand, and can revive itself in the GY (except in the turn it is sent to the GY) by decreasing a friendly WATER monster's Level by 2.
+
In order to do so, the Deck possesses several monsters that bring "Ice Barrier" monsters from the Deck. "Revealer of the Ice Barrier" is the Deck's main starter, being able to discard a card to Summon an "Ice Barrier" Tuner from the Deck. "Hexa Spirit of the Ice Barrier", a Tuner monster, can send any Level 3 or lower "Ice Barrier" monster from the Deck to the GY in order to modulate its Level. "Mirror Magic Master of the Ice Barrier", also a Tuner monster, can search any "Ice Barrier" card when it is sent to the GY. It can also Tribute a monster to Summon up to 3 "Ice Barrier Tokens" and increase its Level. All of the Deck's main plays involve at least one (sometimes all) of these cards.
* "Freezing Chains of the Ice Barrier" is a Continuous Spell that grants some protection to "Ice Barrier" monsters, and can revive a Level 4 or lower "Ice Barrier" monster when activated.
+

* "Winds Over the Ice Barrier" can summon low-Level "Ice Barrier" monsters from the Deck by tributing "Ice Barrier" monsters the player controls, and can banish itself from GY to recover an "Ice Barrier" monster in the GY or the banish pile.
+
The Deck also features several extenders, which allow the player to continue their turn even if "Revealer" or "Mirror Magic Master" are negated. "Georgius, Swordsman of the Ice Barrier" can Summon itself from the hand and another Level 5 or lower "Ice Barrier" from the hand or GY, but only if the player controls an "Ice Barrier" monster. "Speaker for the Ice Barriers" can also Summon itself from the hand, and can also banish itself from the GY to Special Summon an "Ice Barrier Token". "Freezing Chains of the Ice Barrier" is a Continuous Spell that can Special Summon a Level 4 or lower "Ice Barrier" monster from the GY when it is activated, while also protecting "Ice Barrier" monsters from the effects of the opponent's Extra Deck monsters. "General Wayne of the Ice Barrier" can Special Summon itself from the hand by controlling an "Ice Barrier" monster, but also requires the opponent to control a monster. However, it can search any "Ice Barrier" Spell/Trap when Summoned.
Some cards released before the Structure Deck are still useful for the archetype's strategy: "Medallion" is a monster searching Spell with no restrictions attached. "Prior" is a Special Summon extender and can Tribute itself to revive an "Ice Barrier" monster in the GY, though it restricts the player from Special Summon Level 5 or higher monsters the turn it's summoned by its own effect.
+

"Ice Barrier" Synchro Monsters are very strong, but were historically better used in other decks than in "Ice Barrier" due to the archetype's weakness with swarming, and the generic material requirements of these monsters.
+
"Medallion of the Ice Barrier" is the Deck's main consistency card, searching for any "Ice Barrier" monster. "Winds Over the Ice Barrier" is a more risky option, Tributing any number of "Ice Barrier" monsters to Summon the same number of "Ice Barrier" monsters from the Deck. Given the great cost required to activate it, it is recommended to use it only at the end of the combo, far beyond a point in which the opponent would have used a hand trap (such as "Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring"). Outside the archetype's cards, "Small World" is also a great option for the Deck, since the only shared element between all cards is their Attribute (WATER), thus allowing the player to trade any combo piece in their hand (or even hand traps such as "Droll & Lock Bird") for another extender or "Revealer".
* "Dewloren" can return friendly face-up cards to the hand to boost its own ATK. (Prior to its functional errata in 2020/2021, this effect was a standard "once per turn" effect rather than a strict "only once per turn" effect, enabling the potential for infinite hand-returning loops in dedicated builds.) In "Ice Barrier", "Dewloren" can be used to return "Freezing Chains of the Ice Barrier" to the hand to reuse its activation effect.
+

* "Gungnir" and "Brionac" can discard cards to destroy or return the opponent's cards, clearing out the opponent's board.
+
Finally, the Deck can use its several extenders to Summon its Extra Deck monsters. "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" is a classic boss monster that can banish up to 1 card from the opponent's hand, field and GY. "Trishula, Zero Dragon of the Ice Barrier" can banish up to 3 cards the opponent controls, instead. "Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" and "Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" are also removal options, that discard cards in order to bounce or destroy the opponent's cards. "Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier" can return cards the player controls to the hand, which works perfectly with "Freezing Chains of the Ice Barrier".
* "Trishula" and its retrained "Trishula, Zero Dragon" are both powerful monsters that trigger mass banish effects upon being summoned, though they require 2+ non-Tuner monsters to be summoned and are thus harder to make.
+

In terms of generic support, the deck benefits from generic WATER and Aqua support, such as "Moray of Greed", "Salvage", "Surface", and "Barrier Statue of the Torrent". "Ties of the Brethren" can be used to assist in swarming "Ice Barrier" monsters with the archetype's many monsters that share Level, Attribute, and Types.
+
The archetype can also make use of other powerful Extra Deck monster, mainly WATER monsters. "Revealer" and "Speaker" can be used to Xyz Summon "Bahamut Shark", which can Summon "Toadally Awesome", a card able to negate and destroy any activated card. "Mirror Magic Master", combined with its 3 Tokens, plus another Token from "Speaker", can Synchro Summon "Ravenous Crocodragon Archethys", and allow the player to draw 4 cards. Any 2 "Ice Barrier" monsters can Summon "Marincess Coral Anemone", which is used to bring back "Mirror Magic Master" from the GY. By combining "Georgius" with any Level 4 monster, "Icejade Gymir Aegirine" can be Summoned as well, protecting the player's cards from destruction and banishing the opponent's cards. Before locking itself into WATER monsters with the effects of "Revealer" and "Mirror Magic Master", the player can also make use of "Baronne de Fleur", another Level 10 Synchro Monster that can negate the opponent's cards.
 +

 +
Tips
 +
* "Icejade Ran Aegirine" is a perfect addition for the Deck, since it can Synchro Summon "Lancea, Dragonic Ancestor of the Ice Spirit Mountain" (or another Level 10 WATER Synchro Monster) by simply discarding another WATER monster to Summon itself and an "Icejade Token".
 +
* The one-card combo involving "Revealer of the Ice Barrier" to Summon "Lancea, Dragonic Ancestor of the Ice Spirit Mountain" and "Adamancipator Risen - Dragite" Summons "Lancea" as its 5th Summon, thus allowing the player to Summon and use "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" if the opponent uses "Nibiru, the Primal Being".
 +
* While "Revealer of the Ice Barrier" is often the Deck's starter, it can be quite useful to use "Hexa Spirit of the Ice Barrier" + either "Georgius, Swordsman of the Ice Barrier" or "Speaker for the Ice Barriers" instead. This can result in the same combo as using only "Revealer", but does not lock the player into WATER monsters (until "Mirror Magic Master" is used), thus allowing the player to Summon "Baronne de Fleur" before committing to the effect of "Mirror Magic Master of the Ice Barrier".
 +
** When doing so, "Mirror Magic Master" can use itself and a Token to Synchro Summon "Coral Dragon" to the Extra Monster Zone, allowing "Speaker" to banish itself to Summon another Token, and then Synchro Summon "Ravenous Crocodragon Archethys", drawing 1 card from "Coral Dragon" and 3 from "Archethys".
 +
* It is important to remember that "Lancea, Dragonic Ancestor of the Ice Spirit Mountain" is not an "Ice Barrier" monster. As such, lockdown effects that require the player to control another "Ice Barrier" monster (such as "Warlock of the Ice Barrier") still require the player to Summon another "Ice Barrier" monster before being applied.
 +
* The Tokens Summoned by "Mirror Magic Master" are a great way to activate "Winds Over the Ice Barrier", trading them for several Main Deck "Ice Barrier" monsters. Among them, "Spellbreaker of the Ice Barrier" can be particularly useful, since its effect won't work if Summoned by "Lancea".

 +
Sample combos
 +
Most "Ice Barrier" combos aim to Summon "Lancea, Dragonic Ancestor of the Ice Spirit Mountain" and other powerful WATER monsters. One such method is the following:
 +

 +

 +
Another variant can use one of the archetype's extenders to build a much powerful board, allowing the player to draw 4 cards, and getting a negate on board as its 5th Summon, thus playing around "Nibiru, the Primal Being".
 +
{{Combo steps

Weaknesses
Weaknesses
* As "Ice Barriers" thrive on having several monsters on the field, an easy way of dealing with them is to not let them have a decent board. While cards like "Dai-sojo" can protect the board, most "Ice Barrier" players will skip him in deck building or struggle to get him on the field. Also, their lockdowns are never absolute and they rely on several monsters being on the field at the same time, so disposing of one or two can already be enough to tip the field on your favor. "Raigeki", "Dark Hole", "Torrential Tribute" or even single target removal can do the trick.
+
* Unless the player has opened with multiple extenders, negating "Revealer of the Ice Barrier" or "Hexa Spirit of the Ice Barrier" can often end their turn on the spot.
* "Ice Barriers" are also weak against effect negation, since that makes them virtually useless, so cards like "Skill Drain" and "Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King" can work well.
+
* Since all of the Deck's removal options are on their Extra Deck, locking them out of it with cards such as "Dimensional Barrier" or "Vanity's Fiend" can prevent the player from establishing their board.
* You can also prevent the archetype (especially "Gantala") from swarming the field by using Special Summon-blocking cards, such as "Vanity's Emptiness", "Archlord Kristya" or "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo". They are also weak against any of the non-WATER "Barrier Statues".
+
* The Deck has no archetypal Spells/Traps to negate cards. As such, "Dark Ruler No More" and "Forbidden Droplet" can often deal with an "Ice Barrier" board.
* "Ice Barriers" do need quite a number of generic Spell cards to get started, which makes any option that eliminates Spells effective against the archetype; therefore, "Imperial Order" and the like can seriously dampen their potential.
+
* "Droll & Lock Bird" can be used if the player activates "Medallion of the Ice Barrier". This will prevent the search effect of "Mirror Magic Master of the Ice Barrier", and will most likely make their end board a lot weaker.
* The "Ice Barrier" archetype mostly builds defense against attacks but has little to nothing against burn effects, so decks like "Chain Burn" or "Trickstars" can simply melt the player's life points while completely ignoring any defensive setup.
+
* "Gozen Match" will prevent the player from Summoning more than 1 "Ice Barrier" monster.

"Ice Barrier" (ひょうけっかい Hyōkekkai) is an archetype consisting of WATER monsters resembling, for the most part, famous concepts, figures, warriors, and mythological beings of different Asian cultures. Their team symbol resembles a hexagonal snowflake.

Lore

The "Ice Barrier" Crest

Playing style

The "Ice Barrier" archetype consists of a large amount of Main Deck Effect Monsters, several Synchro Monsters that act as boss monsters, and some archetypal Spell/Trap support.

Tips

Sample combos

Most "Ice Barrier" combos aim to Summon "Lancea, Dragonic Ancestor of the Ice Spirit Mountain" and other powerful WATER monsters. One such method is the following:

Opening: "Revealer of the Ice Barrier" + 1 card
 1. Summon "Revealer of the Ice Barrier"
 2. Activate "Revealer" by discarding a card to Summon "Hexa Spirit of the Ice Barrier"
 3. Activate "Hexa" to send "Mirror Magic Master of the Ice Barrier" from the Deck to the GY
 4. Activate "Mirror Magic Master" to add "Georgius, Swordsman of the Ice Barrier"
 5. Activate "Georgius" to Summon itself from the hand
 6. Activate "Georgius" to Summon "Mirror Magic Master" from the GY
 7. Synchro Summon "Lancea, Dragonic Ancestor of the Ice Spirit Mountain" by using "Georgius" and "Revealer"
 8. Activate "Mirror Magic Master" to Tribute "Hexa Spirit" to Summon 3 "Ice Barrier Tokens" and increase its Level to 5
 9. Synchro Summon "Adamancipator Risen - Dragite" by using "Mirror Magic Master" and the 3 "Ice Barrier Tokens"

Another variant can use one of the archetype's extenders to build a much powerful board, allowing the player to draw 4 cards, and getting a negate on board as its 5th Summon, thus playing around "Nibiru, the Primal Being".

 4. Activate "Mirror Magic Master" to add either "Georgius, Swordsman of the Ice Barrier" or "Speaker for the Ice Barriers" (whichever is not in the hand already)
 5. Activate "Speaker" to Summon itself from the hand
 6. Xyz Summon "Bahamut Shark" by using "Revealer" and "Speaker"
 7. Activate "Bahamut Shark" to Summon "Toadally Awesome" from the Extra Deck
 8. Link Summon "Marincess Coral Anemone" by using "Bahamut Shark" and "Hexa Spirit"
 9. Activate "Coral Anemone" to Summon "Mirror Magic Master" from the GY to the zone it points to
 10. Activate "Mirror Magic Master" to Tribute "Coral Anemone" to Summon 3 "Ice Barrier Tokens" and increase its Level to 5
 11. Synchro Summon "Coral Dragon" to the Extra Monster Zone by using "Mirror Magic Master" and 1 "Ice Barrier Token"
 12. Activate "Georgius" to Summon itself from the hand
 13. Activate "Georgius" to Summon "Revealer" from the GY
 14. Synchro Summon "Lancea, Dragonic Ancestor of the Ice Spirit Mountain" by using "Georgius" and "Revealer"
 15. Activate "Speaker" from the GY to Summon another "Ice Barrier Token"
 16. Synchro Summon "Ravenous Crocodragon Archethys" by using "Coral Dragon" and 3 "Ice Barrier Tokens"
 17. Activate "Archetthys" and "Coral Dragon" to draw a total of 4 cards
