'''Tokens''' (Japanese: トークン ''Tōkun'') are a type of [[Monster Card|monster]] that can only be created by card [[effect]]s or [[Skill]]s. They are not included in the [[Main Deck|Main]] or [[Extra Deck]], as stated as [[limitation text]] on each card.

In the ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game|TCG]]'' and ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game|OCG]]'', a Monster Token can be represented by marker that can unambiguously indicate its own battle position. Examples include official Token cards, fan-made proxies, a coin (Heads is treated as [[Attack Position]] and Tails is treated as [[Defense Position]]), or a die. During a duel, duelists using Token Cards to represent Monster Tokens often keep them in a small pile next to their Deck, just below their [[banish]]ed cards, to keep the Token Cards from getting lost or knocked off the table.

Official Token cards are grey. Most ''OCG'' cards from [[Series 8]] onward that correspond to specific Monster Tokens have that Monster Token's name printed as their own name, and sometimes also include the [[ATK]] and [[DEF]] of that Token Monster printed on the card;<ref group=Notes>See [[Card layout#Series 8 layout]]</ref> the ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game|TCG]]'' started following this trend later. The first Token Card that did not correspond to a specific Monster Token was the [[Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's National Championship 2009 promotional cards|National Championship 2009 Token]], which in 2009 was given to participants of United States and Canada's National Championships and participants of the European and South American Continental Championships.

In ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! Power of Chaos: Joey the Passion]]'' and ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! Power of Chaos: Kaiba the Revenge]]'', Token cards are yellow like [[Normal Monster]]s, while their artwork is a recolored TCG artwork of "[[Spellbinding Circle]]" (colors are distinguished by their names and attributes). In other video games, Tokens normally have the same appearance as official Token Cards.

==Mechanics==

* Tokens in a [[Monster Zone]] are always [[Normal Monster]]s and never have effects.

** Some Monster Tokens have effects applied to them by the cards that Summon them, but these are not the effects of the Tokens themselves, so they cannot be negated by cards like "[[Skill Drain]]". Many video games include the restrictions from the effect or Skill that created it in the Token's [[card text]], but it is still not considered to be an effect of the Token itself.

** As it is impossible to Normal Summon them, Tokens are also classified as [[Special Summon Monster]]s.

* Tokens can only exist [[face-up]] on the [[field]].

* Tokens cannot be [[face-down]]. Thus, they cannot be [[target]]ed by, and are not affected by, effects that would [[flip]] them face-down (such as "[[Book of Moon]]" and "[[Swords of Concealing Light]]").

** If an [[Attack Position]] Token would be affected by a card that would change it to face-down [[Defense Position]], such as "[[Swords of Concealing Light]]", the Monster Token's [[battle position]] is not changed.

** Tokens cannot be banished face-down. They are not affected by card effects that would do so.

* If a Token would [[Leaves the field|leave the field]] (i.e. it would be moved to the [[hand]], [[Main Deck]], or [[Graveyard|GY]], or is [[banish]]ed), it simply disappears.

** Tokens can be successfully [[Tribute]]d, [[destroy]]ed, or [[banish]]ed; however, because they simply leave the field, they are not treated as being successfully moved to the hand, Deck, GY, etc.

* Tokens can be used to pay [[cost]]s, as long as the cost does not specify a destination other than the [[field]].

** Tokens can be [[Tribute]]d as a cost (such as for the Special Summon of "[[Destiny HERO - Plasma]]"), but cannot be [[Send|sent]] to the [[Graveyard]] as a cost (such as for the Special Summon of "[[Arcana Force EX - The Dark Ruler]]").

** [[Banish]]ing does not specify a destination, so a Token can be [[banish]]ed for a cost (such as for the [[Special Summon]] of "[[Unibird]]"), unless required to be banished face-down.

* Tokens can be [[Tribute]]d for a [[Tribute Summon|Tribute]] or [[Ritual Summon]], and be used as [[Fusion Material|Fusion]], [[Synchro Material|Synchro]], or [[Link Material]]s. However, Tokens cannot be used as [[Xyz Material]]s, because Xyz Materials [[attach]]ed to an [[Xyz Monster]] are not considered to be on the field.

* Tokens can be the [[target]] of, and are affected by, card effects that cause them to [[leaves the field|leave the field]], even if they specify a destination (such as "[[Number 50: Blackship of Corn]]" and "[[Compulsory Evacuation Device]]"), unless the effect would banish the Token face-down.

** However, Tokens cannot be [[target]]ed or affected by effects that would attach them to an [[Xyz Monster]] (such as "[[Number 101: Silent Honor ARK]]").

* A Token can be treated as an [[Equip Card]] by a card effect (such as "[[The Grand Jupiter]]"), but cannot be Special Summoned from the [[Spell & Trap Zone]].

* The [[owner]] of a Token is the player who [[Special Summon]]ed it.

** For example, "[[Owner's Seal]]" will change control of [[Ojama Token]]s Special Summoned by the effect of "[[Ojama Trio]]" to the player who activated "Ojama Trio".

** "[[Rose Token]]s" are the exception to this, instead being owned by the player who controlled the Summoned monster that caused the "Rose Token" to be Summoned (rather than the player who Summoned the "Rose Token").<ref>{{cite web |url=http://entertainment.upperdeck.com/yugioh/en/gameplay/faqs/cardfaqs/default.aspx?first=A&last=C |title=<nowiki>Individual Card Rulings [A-C</nowiki>] |publisher=UDE |at=Black Garden |archiveurl=http://web.archive.org/web/20090217182013/http://entertainment.upperdeck.com/yugioh/en/gameplay/faqs/cardfaqs/default.aspx?first=A&last=C |archivedate=17 February 2009 |accessdate=8 August 2017}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.db.yugioh-card.com/yugiohdb/faq_search.action?ope=5&fid=7625&request_locale=ja |title=Q&A » 「ローズ・トークン」の元々の持ち主は、どちらのプレイヤーですか? |publisher=Konami |language=Japanese |trans-title=Q&A » Which player is the original owner of the "Rose Token"? |accessdate=8 August 2017}}</ref>

==[[Card text]]==

Prior to [[Series 8]] in the ''OCG'' and [[Series 9]] in the ''TCG'', all Token cards share the same card text and name ([[Token]]). From these series onward in the respective games, some Token cards have different names or card text.
