Playmaker and Faust's Duel

Playmaker and Faust's Duel is the thirteenth Duel of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime, conducted between Playmaker and Faust.

Prior events

Aso had kidnapped Naoki Shima, and forcibly logged him into LINK VRAINS. He challenged The Brave Battler to a Speed Duel, but Playmaker arrived to rescue The Brave Battler, reclaiming his "Cyberse Wizard" card data from him and accused Faust of stealing it. Faust replied that he hadn't done so, and challenged Playmaker for his Ignis, activating a Data Gale for them to Speed Duel in and preventing Playmaker from logging out.

The Duel

Turn 1: Faust
Faust activates the Continuous Spell "Wormhole Defense", Special Summoning a "Motor Worm Token" (0/0) in Defense Position. As Faust controls an Insect monster, he activates the Spell "Motor Worm Bait", Special Summoning two "Motor Worm Tokens" (0/0), but Faust cannot Normal or Special Summon any Level 3 or 4 monsters this turn. Faust sets three "Motor Worm Tokens" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Motor Worm Spreader Queen" (1000/←↙↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Spreader Queen" points to no monsters, Faust activates its effect, Special Summoning a "Motor Worm Token" to his zone it points to. He Special Summons it (0/0) to the zone the bottom-left Link Arrow of "Spreader Queen" points to. The effect of "Spreader Queen" increases its ATK by 700 for each Insect monster on the field. There are two Insect monsters on the field ("Spreader Queen" and a "Motor Worm Token") ("Spreader Queen": 1000 → 2400 ATK). Faust Sets two cards.

Turn 2: Playmaker
Playmaker draws "Linkslayer". As Playmaker controls no monsters, he Special Summons "Linkslayer" (2000/600) from his hand by its own effect. As Playmaker controls a Cyberse monster, he Special Summons "Backup Secretary" from his hand by its own effect. Playmaker sets "Linkslayer" and "Backup Secretary" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Space Insulator" (1200/↑↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. Playmaker Special Summons "Link Infra-Flier" from his hand to his zone a Link Monster points to by its own effect. He Special Summons it (0/1800) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Space Insulator" points to. Playmaker sets "Link Infra-flier" and the Link-2 "Space Insulator" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Decode Talker" (2300/↙↑↘) to the Extra Monster Zone. Playmaker Normal Summons "Cyberse Wizard" (1800/800) to the zone the bottom-left Link Arrow of "Decode Talker" points to. The effect of "Decode Talker" increases its ATK by 500 for each monster it points to. It points to "Cyberse Wizard" ("Decode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK). Playmaker Sets a card.

"Decode Talker" attacks "Spreader Queen". If "Wormhole Defense" in the Spell & Trap Zone or an Insect monster Faust controls would be destroyed by battle or card effect, the effect of "Wormhole Defense" allows Faust to destroy a "Motor Worm Token" he controls instead. He destroys a "Motor Worm Token". The attack continues and neither monster is destroyed (Faust: 4000 → 3600 LP, "Spreader Queen": 2400 → 1700 ATK). "Cyberse Wizard" attacks and destroys "Spreader Queen" (Faust: 3600 → 3500 LP). Faust activates his face-down Trap "Worm Revival", targeting a Link-3 or lower Insect Link Monster in his GY and Special Summoning it, and it cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects this turn, also Faust can Special Summon a "Motor Worm Token" (0/0) to his zone it points to. He targets and Special Summons "Spreader Queen" (1000/←↙↓) and Special Summons a "Motor Worm Token" (0/0) to the zone its middle-left Link Arrow points to ("Spreader Queen": 1000 → 2400 ATK). The effect of "Spreader Queen" prevents Playmaker's monsters from targeting "Motor Worm Tokens" for attacks. As an Insect monster was Special Summoned to Faust's field, he activates his face-down Continuous Trap "Egg Clutch", targeting a monster in Playmaker's Main Monster Zone and changing it to face-up Defense Position, then it becomes an Insect monster, also it has its effects negated. He targets and changes "Cyberse Wizard" to Defense Position, and it becomes an Insect monster ("Spreader Queen": 2400 → 3100 ATK). While "Egg Clutch" is face-up on the field, its effect prevents the targeted monster from changing its battle position.

Turn 3: Faust
Faust activates the effect of "Egg Clutch", Tributing an Insect monster to Special Summon up to two "Motor Worm Tokens" to Playmaker's field in Defense Position. He Tributes a "Motor Worm Token" to Special Summon two "Motor Worm Tokens" (0/0) to Playmaker's field ("Spreader Queen": 3100 → 2400 → 3800 ATK). As "Spreader Queen" points to no monsters, Faust activates its effect, Special Summoning a "Motor Worm Token" to his zone it points to. He Special Summons it (0/0) to the zone the middle-left Link Arrow of "Spreader Queen" points to ("Spreader Queen": 3800 → 4500 ATK). Faust activates the Continuous Spell "Motor Worm Gate". Faust activates the effect of "Gate", targeting an Insect monster he controls, and this turn, it can attack directly if all face-up monsters Playmaker controls are Insect monsters[Note 1]. He targets "Spreader Queen". "Spreader Queen" attacks and destroys "Decode Talker" (Playmaker: 4000 → 2300 LP). During the Battle Phase, Faust activates his Skill "Double Bite", allowing an Insect monster he controls to make a second attack during this Battle Phase. "Spreader Queen" attacks Playmaker directly. As Faust's monster declared an attack while Playmaker controls no monsters in the Extra Monster Zone, He activates his face-down Trap "Urgent Link", halving any battle damage he would take from that battle, then at the end of this turn's Battle Phase, Playmaker can Link Summon a Cyberse Link Monster. The attack continues (Playmaker: 2300 → 50 LP). The effect of "Wormhole Defense" prevents Playmaker from Tributing Insect monsters he controls, or using them as materials for a Link Summon.

Turn 4: Playmaker
Playmaker draws and subsequently activates the Quick-Play Spell "Cybersal Cyclone", targeting a Link Monster Faust controls and banishing a monster from his GY that has the same Link Rating as that monster, then destroying that monster, then if the original Type of the monster he banished was Cyberse, he can destroy a face-up card in Faust's Spell & Trap Zone. He targets the Link-3 "Spreader Queen", and banishes the Link-3 Cyberse "Decode Talker", but as the Insect "Spreader Queen" would be destroyed by card effect, Faust destroys a "Motor Worm Token" ("Spreader Queen": 4500 → 3800 ATK), then Playmaker destroys "Wormhole Defense".

At this point, Playmaker enters the Data Storm. As Playmaker's LP is 1000 or less, he activates his Skill "Storm Access", accessing a Cyberse Link Monster at random from a nearby Data Storm and adding it to his Extra Deck. He obtains "Powercode Talker" and adds it to his Extra Deck.

Playmaker sets "Cyberse Wizard" and two "Motor Worm Tokens" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Powercode Talker" (2300/←↙→) to the Extra Monster Zone ("Spreader Queen": 4500 → 2400 ATK). As the targeted "Cyberse Wizard" left the field, the effect of "Egg Clutch" destroys itself. As a Cyberse Link Monster is Link Summoned to Playmaker's field while "Space Insulator" is in the GY, except the turn it was sent there, Playmaker activates its effect, Special Summoning it to his zone that monster points to, but it cannot be used as Link Material, also it is banished when it leaves the field. He Special Summons it (1200/↑↓) to the zone the bottom-left Link Arrow of "Powercode Talker" points to. Playmaker activates the effect of "Powercode Talker", targeting a face-up monster on the field and negating its effects until the end of this turn. He targets and negates the effects of "Spreader Queen" ("Spreader Queen": 2400 → 1000 ATK). During damage calculation, as "Powercode Talker" is battling Faust's monster, Playmaker activates its effect, Tributing a monster it points to to make its ATK become double its original ATK during that damage calculation only. He Tributes "Space Insulator" ("Powercode Talker": 2300 → 4600 ATK). The attack continues and "Spreader Queen" is destroyed (Faust: 3500 → 0 LP).

Aftermath

During the Duel, Playmaker obtained "Powercode Talker" using Storm Access, allowing him to use it again in future Duels. Due to his loss, Faust was purged by Varis and fell into a coma. Yusaku and Kolter were able to find Shima in the real world, but found no sign of Aso.

Notes

  1. The card text of "Motor Worm Gate" states that the effect can only be activated if all monsters Playmaker controls are Insect monsters, but how it was used is that it can still be activated even if Playmaker controls a non-Insect monster, but the targeted monster can only attack directly if all monsters Playmaker controls are Insect monsters.
