| {{Infobox/Archetype/ExtendedNameA Trigger Effect (Japanese: 誘発効果 Yūhatsu Kōka) is a type of monster effect that is activated at a specific time. This can either be in response to a specific event or during a particular phase or step. Unless otherwise specified, Trigger Effects can be activated during either player’s turn.   Trigger Effects are Spell Speed 1 and therefore cannot be chained to other effects, except when multiple Trigger Effects want to be activated simultaneously, in which case they will form a Chain with each other according to the rules for kanji simultaneous effects. Trigger Effects that are activated in response to a specific event, such as a card being destroyed, or a card being added to the hand, are activated in the yellow box of the "Fast effect timing" chart, and must either be activated at this point, or not at all. Examples include "Jurrac Guaiba" and "Number 39: Utopia".  For optional Trigger Effects that activate "when" a specific action occurs, their trigger must have been the last thing to happen, or else the effect cannot be activated. See If... You Can VS When... You Can for more information. Trigger Effects that are not triggered by a specific event, but rather by a particular period of time, such as the Standby Phase, can be activated when the player has the right to perform an action and only during an open game state. This means that they can only ever be activated as Chain Link 1. In this regard, their function is more similar to Ignition Effects (except that they are activated outside the Main Phase) as the player can choose at which point during that time to activate the effect. Examples include "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" and "Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss". == 誘発効果 | japanese Damage Step= | furigana = Trigger Effects that are activated at a particular part of the Damage Step, such as the effect of "Ally of Justice Catastor", activate immediately upon their effect being triggered, similar to other Trigger Effects that are activated in response to a specific event. Multiple Trigger Effects of this nature will form a Chain in accordance with the rules for romaji = Yūhatsu Kōkasimultaneous effects. | japanese translated = | english = For whether or not a Trigger Effect whose trigger does not exclusively occur during the Damage Step can be activated during the Damage Step, it is best to consider each card on a case-by-case basis. Usually, if such a Trigger Effectcannot be used at that time, its TCG text will state "except during the Damage Step," though this is not always the case.  | french = Effet Déclencheur=Spell/Trap effects that trigger== Spell and Trap Cards can also have effects that trigger; these effects are informally called Trigger-like Effects. When the effect of an already-face-up Spell or Trap Card is triggered, the effect functions just like the Trigger Effect of a monster and activates in the yellow box of the "Fast effect timing" chart. If multiple effects are triggered, monster or otherwise, the rules for german simultaneous effects are followed.  ===Continuous Trap Cards=== Triggereffekt | italian If a Continuous Trap Card has an effect that triggers, it is also possible to activate both the Trap Card and its effect in the same Chain Link in response to the event that triggers the effect at the time when the player has the right to activate a fast effect. For example, if a monster you control is destroyed by battle whilst you control a face-up "Yang Zing Creation", if you choose to activate the effect of this face-up "Yang Zing Creation", you must do so in the yellow box of the "Fast effect timing" chart, before either player can activate fast effects. If, however, "Yang Zing Creation" is face-down on the field when the monster is destroyed by battle, so long as the monster being destroyed is still the last thing to happen, you can activate the effect of "Yang Zing Creation" in the same Chain Link as the card itself.  Continuous Trap Cards which have effects that state they must be activated while the Trap Card is already face-up on the field, such as "Predaplanet", cannot activate that effect in the same Chain Link as the Trap Card itself.  Further, Continuous Trap Cards which have rulings that state that their effect cannot be activated in the same Chain Link as the card itself must have first been activated, and resolved, for an action to be able to trigger their effects. Trigger effects are considered to be Spell Speed 1, but that doesn't mean you can activate them when ever you want, only when the condition has been met. If Compulsory Trigger Effects or Optional Trigger Effects (that do not miss the timing) trigger at a time when they cannot be fr_name = Effet Déclencheur| de_name = Triggereffekt| it_name = Effetto Innescato|activated, such as if there exists a current chain, each effect that was triggered will start a new chain at the next opportunity afterwards that they can start a chain. For simultaneous activations, the order these effects are added to the start of the new chain follow the rulings for when Simultaneous Effects Go On the Chain (TCG currently handles the ordering differently than OCG).es_name = Efecto Disparado | ja_name = 誘発効果The effect of "Zaborg the Thunder Monarch" is triggered when it is Tribute Summoned, and the effect requires it to destroy 1 monster on the field.| ja_romaji = Yūhatsu Kōka | ko_name = 유발 효과Optional Trigger Effects are effects that don't happen automatically when the trigger condition is fulfilled, the controlling player decides whether to activate it or not. These effects involve cards like "Mystic Tomato", "Peten the Dark Clown", or "Dark Magician of Chaos". With "When... you can..." Optional Trigger Effects it is possible to miss the timing. However, with optional Trigger Effects, like ones with the structure, "If... you can...", the effect can be activated at the first possible opportunity to activate cards and effects after the activation timing was met (skipping over any chain opportunities that forbid that particular effect from activating at that time, such as the Summon negation window).ko_rr = Yubal Hyogwa | zh_name = 誘發效果| zh_pinyin = Yòufā XiàoguǒWhen two Optional Trigger Effects try to activate at the same time such as two copies of "Mystic Tomato" destroy each other in battle, neither will miss the timing, as the last thing to happen was both being sent to the Graveyard. Both of the effects trigger at the same time, and form a Chain. The Turn Player's effect becomes Chain Link 1, and the opponent's effect becomes Chain Link 2.}}
Only the activation of an Optional Trigger Effect can miss the timing. In other words, as long as the effect is activated, the resolution will never miss the timing. So two monsters will be summoned in the above example.==References== Compulsory Trigger Effects are effects that must resolve, and are not Optional. If the conditions for their activations are met during a Chain that is currently resolving, they can only be activated after the current Chain is completely resolved. Identifying Trigger Effects can be done, for cards made after PSCT change, by looking for a timing related condition, followed by a colon " : ". Some of these cards are not necessarily Trigger Effects, such as Ignition effects that are usually in the form "Once per turn: You can..." or "During your Main Phase: You can..." If you are not sure what type of effect(s) a card has, the information can be looked up. Note that cards like Obelisk the Tormentor with PSCT have the word "When" but don't have a colon. Instead, these usually denote conditions.<references/>
Unlike ==See also==* Ignition Fast EffectTimings, which can only be activated on your * Main PhaseIf... You Can VS When... You Can, Trigger * Simultaneous Effects activate during either player's turn, as long as the timing or condition for the effect is met.
