Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force, known in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Tag Force is a video game based on the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime series. It is the Yu-Gi-Oh! series' debut on the PlayStation Portable system and the first game in the Tag Force series. The game was ported to the PlayStation 2 under the name Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force Evolution, and it includes connectivity with the original game's sequel.

The player enrolls at Duel Academy as a transfer student. The main focus of the game is a Tag Force tournament that will take place on the island. Players must find a partner to compete in the tournament alongside. The game includes characters from the anime, as well as characters exclusive to the video games.

Story

The player enrolls at Duel Academy one month after the beginning of the school year during the month of May. As a transfer student, you are automatically placed in the Slifer Red dorm. The game is divided into three parts, each with different goals, all of which are ultimately accomplished through Dueling.

In the first part of the game, one must find a partner. During the first playthrough, the player may select Jaden Yuki, Syrus Truesdale, Chumley Huffington, Bastion Misawa, Chazz Princeton, Alexis Rhodes or Zane Truesdale as a partner. However, in order to convince them to team up with you, you must build a relationship with them. Whenever a conversation is prompted, you are given four options - to talk about "Duels", "The Academy", "Hobbies" or "Rumors". During each conversation one of the first three choices is randomly selected to harm affection, while the other two will improve it. This can be avoided by getting Pharaoh to follow you, should he be with you, all three choices will yield the best result. Affection can also be increased by giving the characters sandwiches that can be purchased at Duel Academy's card shop. Everyone has different tastes, though all seven characters love the Golden Eggwich. Affection is measured via a heart meter. Once seven hearts are obtained, the character will offer to become your partner. Filling the meter completely to eight hearts will result in the character gifting the player with cards that are either hard to acquire or impossible to obtain otherwise. It is completely possible to maximize the relationship with all Tier 1 characters before ending Part 1.

Each Sunday, Tag Duels are held at the Academy's Duel field. Of the seven characters, the one you have the best affection level with will be you partner for those Duels. Should multiple characters be equal, the one with the higher in-game number will partner with you. Due to this, should all characters be equal, the partner will be Jaden by default, as he is listed as Duelist #1. The SAL lab is unlocked as an visitable area, and may use the "Card Converter" and "Rental" machines to expand their collection of cards.

At the end of July, the Tag Force tournament is held, beginning the game's second part. At this point, players may select any character with enough affection to be a partner for the duration of the playthrough. The player and their partner start with 10 GX Medals, and must bet them in Tag Duels with other Duelists. Up to five medals may be wagered per Duel, but the opponent randomly decides the number, and all duels are Tag Duels. One must acquire ninety GX Medals to make it the final round of the tournament, which takes place in the newly-built Special Finals Arena. The tournament is won by winning 4 Tag Duels in the Finals.

Chancellor Sheppard meets with the player and their partner, and entrusts two of the Spirit Keys to them. The game's third part is a conflict against the Shadow Riders. Each of the seven of them has brainwashed another character and they will function as the Riders' partners against the player and their partner. Should one of the characters involved in these Duels already be the player's partner, the Duel against them is simply skipped. Defeating all seven Shadow Riders forces the player into a Duel against their leader, Kagemaru, who must be defeated 2 times in a row to finish the game

Once the player has finished Part 3 at least once, the player can partner with any other character in the game in Part 2 and 3 by asking them to do so in Part 1. Several new characters can be unlocked as opponents and possible partners as well. Playing through Part 2 and Part 3 after beating the game once gives the player the option to do Single Duels instead of Tag Duels, except during the Tournament Finals and against the Shadow Riders.

The game features 2451 playable cards, plus 22 Monster Tokens. This largely comprises cards released in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game (OCG) before this game. It also includes 20 cards from the anime, which did not exist in the OCG at the time of this game's release.

Video-game only cards

Tag Force features twenty cards that had not been released in the OCG or TCG at the time of the game's release. All 20 had previously featured in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime. All of them have the "Game Original" genre in this game.

Of the twenty cards, four of them (bolded below) have since been released in the OCG.

Alternative artworks

Excluding Tokens, there are 37 cards with alternative artworks. The player can unlock them by talking to Sartyr in Part 3 of the story. Sartyr will give the "Gaia The Fierce Knight" artwork for free and make the others available in a lottery, which costs 11 Genex Medallions to play.

If the player has unlocked an alternative artwork for a card, the card will have the "Card with a different artwork" genre. The player can then toggle which artwork is used by opening the card's details and page and pressing the "L" and "R" buttons. This will change the artwork for all copies of the card at once. e.g. it will not be possible to see two copies of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" with different artworks at the same time.

The Tokens, "Sheep", "Lamb" and "Ojama" also have alternative artworks, but do not have the "Card with a different artwork" genre and are not included in Sartry's lottery. Within the game's code each artwork is treated as a separate card. This enables them to bypass the restriction of being only able to show one artwork at a time for a given card.

Other

• The player begins the game with an Initial Deck of 42 cards. It is a WATER-themed Deck identical to the one used by Gillian.
• Reward cards are granted in tutorials at the beginning of the game on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
• By inserting cards into the card converter in the lab, the player will be given a new card from a pool of cards based on the number of cards they inserted.
• If the player gets a Plain Sandwich at the shop, they are also given a hidden card.
• Characters will award the player with certain cards if they build a maximum level of trust, if applicable. Otherwise they award the cards if the player registers ten wins against them.
• By completing story mode, the player is awarded the Sacred Beast cards.
• Certain cards were available for download from Konami.

Glitches

Functional

• The player can activate card effects that can search for other cards even if there are no appropriate cards to search. For example "Future Fusion".

• The effect of "Manticore of Darkness" is unusable.

• If "Destiny Board" is destroyed when constructing the message, the other letters remain on the field instead of going to the Graveyard.

Spelling and grammar

Cards:

• "Dark Sage" misspells "Tribute" as "Trbute".
• "Dark Scorpion - Tragedy of Love" is missing a space in the text '"Don Zaloog"and'.
• "Elemental Hero Erikshieler" reads "this card are" instead of "this card is".
• "Fairy King Truesdale" uses the British English spelling of "Defense" ("Defence").
• "Hyozanryu" misspells "massive" as "massibe".
• "Mystical Elf" misspells "mystical" as "mistical".
• "Nimble Momonga" uses the British English spelling of "Defense" ("Defence").
• "Philosopher's Stone - Sabatier" reads "this turns End Phase", instead of "this turn's End Phase".

Other:

• In the "Options" menu, the explanation of the "Activation Confirm" setting reads "confirm it's effects", instead of "confirm its effects".
• The description for the "Dried Mackerel Sandwich" reads "an uniquely", instead of "a uniquely".

Formerly a talented duelist, but his opponents would lose their motivation when dueling with him, so he was confined to a special dorm as a result. He is able to communicate with the spirits, and he wants to release the spirits of other people from duels.

The main power of his Deck comes from "Mokey Mokey" cards.
He's a very cute character, so be careful not to get sucked into his trap.

Wheeler is an experimental chimpanzee.
He was raised in a research facility on the Academy's island.
He can't play golf, but he's quite the duelist.
Other than monkey grunts, Wheeler is capable of using actual words. But a machine allows him to speak, so the words are not from his own mouth.

Quite a few monkey-related cards are in his Deck.
