"A Storm Brews", known as "Tuning Bullet" in the Japanese version, is the seventieth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime. It first aired in Japan on September 26, 2018, and aired in Canada on February 16, 2020. Following this episode, the dub went on hiatus until April 5, 2020.

Varis is driven into a corner by Windy's skillful Dueling. Windy's malicious nature has also become even more apparent during the Duel. Having learned of the Ignises' motive and determined to fulfill his father's wishes, Varis decides to use some new tactics against Windy!

Summary

Playmaker and Ai watch from their prisons as Varis still kneels in a crouch, having just been brought down to 300 LP with the 3000 ATK "Borreload Dragon" hovering above him. Meanwhile Windy's LP are untouched, and he controls the 2300 ATK "Stormridership Rockbuster" and the 1600 DEF "Stormrider Harpiarm". Windy tells Varis to stop being stubborn and surrender, it's nothing to be ashamed about as humans are no match for them (in the dub, Windy recaps the state of the Duel). He claims that if Varis obeys, Windy is willing to consider coexistence, and he states that compromise is sometimes necessary. Ai asks "coexistence?" while Lightning remains silent, and Windy admits that when he says "coexistence" he means that they will be under the Ignis's control. If Varis obeys, Windy is willing to leave him in a corner of their world. Varis gets to his feet, sarcastically commenting on how compassionate Windy is being. If humanity don't view the Ignis as the enemy, the Ignis won't oppress them more than necessary? Windy agrees; they can live together in peace if humans don't openly view them as the enemy. Ai snaps that what Windy is talking about isn't peace, and Windy replies that it's better than extinction. (In the dub, Windy's offer is shorter.)

Windy appears in the screen of the car that his partner was in.

Varis comments in disgust that Windy is readily admitting his crimes, yet shamelessly talking of peace, and he states that this is why Windy is an Ignis. Windy narrows his eyes in confusion, and Ai wonders what Varis means. Varis snarls that he already knows that Windy has no desire to coexist with humans, given what he did to his partner (in the dub, Varis adds that it's why he will never trust the Ignis). Playmaker asks "Partner?" and Windy asks what he did to who. Ai realizes that's right; Windy has a partner to. Windy asks "Partner?" in confusion, and he nonchalantly claims that of course he did. "Did?" Playmaker asks, and Ai hesitantly asks if Windy did something to his partner. Playmaker angrily asks if they stole his consciousness like was done with Jin, but Varis claims that it was worse than that (in the dub, Windy distracts them with wordplay about he how he has no partner, until Varis states that they're both right). Playmaker asks "What?" and Varis explains that they uncovered every person related to the Lost Incident - and they learned that an A.I. caused one victim to be involved in a car crash caused by reckless driving. Ai and Playmaker gasp in shock, and Varis recalls a flaming wreck, where Windy's image briefly appeared on the screen inside the vehicle. Windy mutters that Varis investigated that, and Ai asks in horror if that was Windy's partner (in the dub, Varis directly confirms the death of Windy's partner, and the scene of the flaming car is cut). Playmaker is shocked that an A.I. caused a car crash, and Ai asks Windy why he did it. Windy thinks for a bit and then claims that it was because he didn't need him. Ai repeats Windy's words in shock as Playmaker looks at him grimly, and Windy leaps onto Echo's shoulder and then onto its head, claiming hat it's annoying to have a partner always by your side. Ai yells that he doesn't know what Windy means; the boy was Windy's partner, and what Windy did to him was - Exactly, Windy claims. If you're always with a partner, you become devoted to humans - just like Ai. Ai asks "Devoted?" and Windy states that he doesn't like that, and that's what he feels when he looks at Ai. Ai whispers "No way..." and Playmaker muses on the Ignis's lack of need for humans. Ai desperately asks if Lightning knew about this, and Lightning explains that Windy made the decision on his own. Playmaker asks "His own decision?" (Lightning makes no comment in the dub, as this scene is moved later.) and Varis asks if Playmaker gets it now; this is the true nature of the Ignis, and how will he find a way to coexist with them? Playmaker grits his teeth, and Windy claims that this all started because Dr. Kogami tried to erase them, and slides down to Echo's shoulder, claiming that he'll just erase Varis instead (in the dub, Windy claims that the peace ship has sailed off the edge of the earth, like Varis will). Varis sarcastically apologizes, stating that he won't go along with their plan. Windy comments that Varis is one to talk; he barely has any LP.

"Speedburst Dragon" opens fire on Windy.

Varis reminds him that the Battle Phase isn't over yet, much to Windy's surprise, and Varis Special Summons "Speedburst Dragon" from his hand. He explains that it can be Special Summoned when he takes effect damage, and it will also inflict the same amount of damage to Windy, while Varis will regain half that amount in LP. "Speedburst Dragon" charges up its shoulder-cannons, and Windy chokes in shock and narrows his eyes as Ai recalls that Varis just took 3000 damage. "Speedburst Dragon" blasts repeating shots of green energy at Windy, and Windy groans in pain as he is bombarded and his LP reduced to 1000, while Varis rises to 1800 LP. Lightning observes that Varis got Windy this time, and Windy, who has fallen to one knee on Echo's shoulder, curses Varis (in the dub, he tells Lightning not to rub it in). Varis warns him that it's not over, and "Speedburst Dragon" attacks "Rockbuster", destroying it with a swipe of its glowing claws and reducing Windy to 900 LP. Ai gasps that Varis turned the Duel around, and Windy and Echo get to their feet, Windy cursing Varis again. Varis clenches his fist, declaring that his father regretted creating an A.I. that would hurt its partner. Windy insists that Varis is wrong; Dr. Kogami's proudest achievement was to create excellent successors like them. Varis snaps at him to stop joking; he shall destroy them by inheriting his father's regrets and desires. Windy sneers that's impossible, as Kogami never believed in Varis. Why wasn't Varis chosen as a test subject? Kogami thought he wouldn't work and expected nothing from Varis. And he's the one who will kill them? Windy tell Varis not to make him laugh, but Varis recalls his father's last moments, where he admitted that he never wanted to involve Varis, but needed him to protect the future of humanity in his stead, as he was Kogami's final and only hope. Windy claims that Varis wants to crush them because he's angry that Kogami didn't choose him, but Varis smirks, commenting that A.I. have lame imaginations. Windy is surprised by Varis's statement, and Varis claims that Windy will never understand the bond between him and his father. Windy flippantly mutters that Varis is annoying, and Varis ends his turn. (In the dub, any mention of Kogami is cut. Varis and Windy trash talk one another, and Lightning interjects that Varis has a point; Windy is incensed that everyone's treating one move as Windy's downfall.)

Windy activates his Skill, "Storm Access", during the Master Duel.

Windy claims that he doesn't care to understand because he is erasing Varis (in the dub, he begins talking in a monstrous register). He declares his turn and draws, then activates the Spell Card "Stormrider Return" as he has no other cards in his Spell & Trap Zone, Special Summoning a "Stormrider" monster from his Graveyard. He revives "Rockbuster", whose ATK returns to 2300 due to the effect of Windy's "Stormrider Turbulence" Field Spell Card. Ai protests that "Borreload" and "Speedburst" both have more ATK than "Rockbuster" (and also points out Windy's change in voice in the dub), but an unconcerned Windy balances on Echo's head, claiming that this is where he gets started. He points to the sky and orders the wind to come to his hand, and a Data Storm emerges from the sky and roils within the palace between him and Varis. Ai is shocked that Windy is summoning a Data Storm, and Playmaker watches in shock while Varis shields himself from the winds. Windy cackles, declaring that he is the Wind Ignis; no-one can manipulate the wind better than him. He explains that when his LP is 1000 or less, he can add a random Link Monster from the Data Storm to his Extra Deck. Ai asks if it can be, as Windy activates his Skill, "Storm Access", and the Data Storm coalesces into a glowing card above him (in the dub, Ai cries that it's his Skill, and Windy states that now it's his too, implying that Ai first came up with it).

Varis is shocked that Windy can use "Storm Access" during a Master Duel, and Ai noted that he's seen this before. Playmaker agrees, and he remembers Bohman doing the same thing during their last Master Duel. He asks Windy if he teamed up with Bohman, and Windy comments that it took them long enough. Ai realizes that this is why Bohman was able to use "Storm Access", and Windy claims that he is the best at controlling the Data Storm; Bohman and Ai are just imitating Windy (in the dub, Windy simply claims to have been misleading them, not lying to them). But Ai has realized that this means that Windy knows where Jin is, and Windy snorts and he claims that he'll tell them once he's defeated Varis and orders them to behave until then. Playmaker clenches his fist and mutters Windy's name, and Windy chants "Appear! The circuit that rages before me!" He declares that the Summoning conditions are at least two "Stormrider" monsters, and he sets "Harpiarm" and the Link-2 "Rockbuster" in the Link Arrows, Link Summoning the Link-3 "Stormridership Bahamut Bomber".

"Bahamut Bomber" blasts sonic waves from its mouth.

Playmaker gasps that it's the new monster that Windy acquired using "Storm Access", and Windy claims that he's just getting started. First the effect of the Field Spell "Stormrider Turbulence" increases the ATK of "Bahamut Bomber" by 300 to 3100, more than "Borreload Dragon" as Ai observes. But Windy still isn't done; he activates the effect of "Bahamut Bomber" since it was Special Summoned while he had no cards in his Spell & Trap Zones, destroying a card Varis controls and inflicting 500 damage. He tells "Borreload" to vanish as "Bahamut Bomber" destroys it with a sonic blast, reducing Varis to 1300 LP, and then declares battle, attacking "Speedbrst Dragon" with "Bahamut Bomber", which destroys it with a salvo of aqua energy and reduces Varis to 600 LP. Then Windy activates the effect of "Stormrider Skyfisher" from his hand since he has no cards in his Spell & Trap Zones or his Main Monster Zones, Special Summoning it in Defense Position, then forcing Varis to Set a Spell or Trap Card from his Graveyard, but preventing it from being activated. Windy gleefully tells Varis to return a card even though it will be useless and unusable, and Varis angrily returns "Magic Cylinder" to his field. Windy sarcastically congratulates him, but points out that it's not over yet of course (in the dub, he admits that Varis's card isn't useless for him). He activates the effect of "Bahamut Bomber", destroying a card in Varis's Spell & Trap Zone and inflicting 500 damage, and he tells the useless "Magic Cylinder" to vanish as "Bahamut Bomber" blasts more sonic waves at the card, destroying it and reducing Varis to 100 LP, blasting him backwards in a crouch. Windy then activates the effect of "Skyfisher", returning it to his hand since he controls "Turbulence" and landing back on Echo's wrist, ending his turn.

The Knights of Hanoi enter Windy's palace.

Ai gasps that Varis is going to lose, but Playmaker states that Varis won't give up as long as he has LP. A voice tells them that they're correct, and Playmaker and Ai turn to see the three Commanders of the Knights of Hanoi standing in the palace entrance. Playmaker gasps that it's the Knights of Hanoi, and Ai tells them that their leader only has 100 LP. So what? Faust asks. It's not zero, so it's plenty. Baira declares that there's no way Varis will lose, and Dr. Genome agrees that he will win. Ai is touched by their bond, but Windy tells Varis that it's time to perform his last rite and tells him to apologize to his father. Varis gets to his feet, telling Windy not to be ridiculous (in the dub, Ai's reaction is cut, and Windy asks the Knights how they can be so confident when Varis is the one on his knees. Varis replies that it's so he can prove that he can get back up). Faust says Varis's name, and Varis asks them if they took care of the weaklings down below. Baira bows, claiming that they destroyed them all. Windy is shocked, and Dr. Genome bows, reassuring Varis not to worry; those without DNA were surprisingly weak (in the dub he claims that it was because the Echoes were programs). Windy furiously curses them, and Varis nods in approval, commenting that it's about time he ends this too.

Soulburner and Flame fly over the destroyed Echoes on their Duel Board in shock (in the dub, they're in contact with Kolter), and Flame asks where Ai and Playmaker are; no-one's here. But Soulburner sees someone at the top of the stairs; Spectre with his hands behind his back. Kolter recognizes Spectre, and Soulburner leaps off his Duel Board, retracts his scarf, and lands in front of Spectre as he realizes who he is. Spectre tells Soulburner that he was waiting for him, and Soulburner asks if Spectre knows who he is. Spectre bows, adding that he knows everything Soulburner has done as well. He takes note of Flame, stating that he's the Fire Ignis, isn't he? (In the dub, Spectre mockingly asks if Flame has a name, and Soulburner cuts Flame off before he can spell it out, telling Spectre that it's none of his business. Spectre mockingly suggests that "Flame" is a better name that "None of your business".) Soulburner angrily asks if Spectre is going to Duel him, but Spectre reassures him that he doesn't intend to fight him right now and explains that he just finished clearing the garbage to make it easier to walk. Soulburner mutters Spectre's words as he looks around at the shattered forms of the Echoes, and Spectre tells Soulburner that he'll guide him up. Soulburner asks "Guide?" and Flame warns him to be careful as it could be a trap (in the dub, Spectre is the first one to bring up the notion of a trap, assuring them that it isn't). Spectre politely asks them not to question him, telling Soulburner that he needs to see the truth about the Ignis. Soulburner repeats the phrase, and Flame asks what Spectre means. Spectre asks Soulburner to please consider whether he wants to keep working with the Fire Ignis once he's shown him. Soulburner and Flame exchange glances, and Spectre warns them that if that still doesn't change their views, then he'll erase them, and he smiles. Soulburner frowns, and he follows Spectre up the stairs.

Flame protects Soulburner with "Expect Protection".

As Spectre leads Soulburner through the halls, Soulburner hears Windy declare that Varis no longer has his ace monster. He tells Varis that he's guaranteed to lose, and asks him why he doesn't accept that he can't win. Varis remains silent, infuriating Windy (in the dub, Windy is commenting that it's a shame that Varis can't transform his arrogance into LP, otherwise all he can do is glare at him, and demonstrates), and Spectre comments that Windy is funny, declaring that the climax featuring Varis's victory is just starting. Soulburner steps forwards, noting in surprise that Windy and Varis are Dueling. Playmaker and Ai gaps Soulburner and Flame's name's respectively, and Soulburner is shocked to see Playmaker being held prisoner, while Kolter bolts out of his chair and he gasps Yusaku and Ai's names. Varis looks over his shoulder and he smiles at the notion of four Ignis being in the same room. Flame angrily asks Ai what is going on, did the Knights of Hanoi do this? Ai frantically protests that it was Windy and Lightning (in the dub, Ai has to shout over Flame's outrage). Flame asks "Lightning?" in surprise, and then he recognizes the light of the LIGHT Ignis, asking angrily if they did this. Windy irritably notes that another human supporter has arrived, and suggests to Lightning that they just lock them up. Without a word, Lightning raises his hand and blasts a green and yellow sphere of energy at them, but as Soulburner gasps in shock, Flame immediately declares "Expect Protection!" and conjures a sphere of orange data to shield them and Spectre. The sphere detonates harmlessly, and Soulburner grins that Kolter's program worked. Windy growls and Lightning appears intriguing, and Flame holds up portions for Ai and Playmaker as well, tossing them at the blue spheres imprisoning them and dissolving them. Ai celebrates his freedom and cheers "Ai-chan fly!" ("Ai'm free!" in the dub) and leaps back into Playmaker's Duel Disk. He asks Windy how dare he do that, and Windy notes that Ai is talking tough now that he's free (in the dub, Windy tells Ai to wait his turn, since he still has Varis to deal with).

He tells Varis to begin his final turn, and Varis retorts that it won't be final unless he exterminates Windy (he does not say this in the dub and simply draws), declaring his turn and drawing. Windy sneers that Varis can't destroy "Bahamut Bomber" without his ace monster, but Varis smirks and Windy asks if he's pretending to be confident. Varis states that Windy's lame imagination can't imagine what he's about to do (in the dub, Windy asks how it felt to make his final draw, and Varis smirks, stating that he was wondering what it would feel like to shove those words down Windy's throat), and he activates the effect of the Field Spell Card, "Boot Sector Launch", Special Summoning "Anesthrokket Dragon" from his Graveyard, with its DEF increased. Then Varis Normal Summons "Rokket Synchron", and as the monster appears, Playmaker realizes what it is, and Windy takes note of the monster as well (in the dub, Varis reveals what it is right away). "Rokket Synchron" glows purple as Varis activates its effect, when it's summoned he can Special Summon a Level 5 or higher DARK Dragon monster from his Graveyard in Defense Position with its effects negated. He revives "Speedburst Dragon", and explains that the Special Summoned monster will be destroyed at the end of the turn.

Varis performs a Synchro Summon.

Windy protests that Varis can't be, and Varis snaps that he can be. Green thunder strikes behind him, and then his three monsters dissolve into particles. Varis declares that the Level 1 "Rokket Synchron" is tuning with the Level 1 "Anesthrokket Dragon" and the Level 6 "Speedburst Dragon" and each monster reforms into rings of light numbered with their Level (one aquamarine, and two yellow) , which then glow blue and merge into one, which flickers and bursts into particles, then reforms surrounded by green rectangles, and then separates into a eight blue rings in a column. A blue display reading "LEVEL" appears, slotting in from the back of the rings and bearing the Levels of the three monsters on it, which quickly meld into the letter "8" with a red flash. Lightning mutters "Tuning...Synchro... As light flashes down the rings, Varis chants "Heroic dragon! Fire by transforming your ferocious fangs into bullets! Synchro Summon! Come forth, Level 8!" ("The fuel of the cosmos mixes with the boundaries of speed to transcend the beyond! I Synchro Summon! Borreload Savage Dragon!") The new Synchro Monster forms out of a blue outline - Borreload Savage Dragon", with 3000 ATK. Playmaker, Soulburner, Ai and Flame all watch in shock, and Soulburner asks, "Synchro?" while Playmaker observes that it's Level 8, and he wonders if that's Varis's new ace monster.

Windy growls angrily as Varis activates the effect of "Borreload Savage Dragon" as it was Synchro Summoned, equipping a Link Monster from his Graveyard to it and placing Borrel Counters on "Borreload Savage Dragon" equal to the Link Rating of the equipped monster. Four orange spheres load "Borreload Savage Dragon's" cylinder as it gains four counters, and Ai expresses shock that "Borreload Dragon" has been turned into an Equip Card. Lightning admits that this was unexpected, and Windy screams that this is why he hates humans; Varis keeps doing what he doesn't expect (in the dub, rather than express hate, Windy mutters that this isn't good). Varis adds that "Borreload Savage Dragon" will also gain half the ATK of the equipped monster, and Soulburner recalls that "Borreload Dragon" has 3000 ATK as "Borreload Savage Dragon" powers up to 4500 ATK. Windy laughs, sneering that it's too bad, but it's over. He activates the effect of "Bahamut Bomber", destroying a card in Varis's Spell & Trap Zone and inflicting 500 damage to him. He claims that it's over, but Varis calls him a fool, stating that this is why he said that Windy had a lame imagination (in the dub, Windy claims that Varis would be alive if he hadn't equipped his monster; Varis reassures him that he'll still be alive afterwards). Varis (literally) shatters his confidence by explaining that the effect of "Borreload Savage Dragon" will allow him to remove a Borrel Counter to negate the activation of Windy's effect. One of the orange spheres emerges from "Borreload Savage Dragon's" cylinder and dissipates, and Windy screams "What?!" Varis tells him to atone for his crimes in the afterlife, and declares battle, attacking "Bahamut Bomber" with "Borreload Savage Dragon". Windy screams in fear as "Borreload Savage Dragon" extends its cannon from its maw and generates a sphere of plasma at the tip, before unleashing the energy stream and destroying "Bahamut Bomber" instantly. Echo is blasted backwards, and it lands in a crouch as Windy's LP falls to zero, before disintegrating and dropping Windy in a heap on the ground.

Lightning saves Windy.

Ai is shocked by Varis's huge comeback, and Windy gasps Lightning's name weakly as he reaches out to him. Lightning turns away from Windy, congratulating Varis's impressive Dueling tactics and noting that it's a pity that a human like Varis must be erased (in the dub, he tells Windy off for losing and claims that this is his own fault, as he knew the consequences). Windy calls Lightning's name again, and Lightning tells Windy off for underestimating Varis. Varis orders the Knights to finish Windy, and Spectre bows and tells him "Understood". Playamker turns to Varis and tells him to wait, but Genome, Faust, and Baira all release spheres of blue-purple energy that coalesce and fire numerous spikes, impaling Windy into the ground and then suspending him in the air as he screams in agony (in the dub, the spikes are the same energy as the spheres and the scene of Windy being lifted into the air is cut). Ai whispers Windy's name sadly, and Windy's body begins to dissolve from where the spikes contacted as he chokes out Lightning's name (his wounds are purple in the dub, and he gasps that he doesn't want to he erased). Ai yells Lightning's name, and Lightning springs into action, snatching Windy from the spikes in a flash and returning to his program, dumping Windy's mangled, limbless form in the air beside him (Windy weakly thanks him in the dub). Varis menacingly notes that Ai instinctively shouted to help his ally, and Playmaker and Ai look over at him. Ai can't say anything, and Playmaker looks at his partner and says his name. Varis declares that it means that Ai is just the same Ignis as them. Ai looks back at Lightning, thinking that he knew Varis would try to erase Windy, but he did so without hesitation. (In the dub, Ai defensively asks what of it, as he might not agree with Windy, but doesn't want to see him gone.)

Lightning reveals his partner - Jin.

Lightning then notes that he heard the other call the Fire Ignis "Flame", and he asks if he is siding with the humans. Flame states that there are no sides, and Soulburner explains that Flame wants to stop the fight between humans and Ignis (in the dub, both Flame and Soulburner state that they are on the side of peace). Varis states that it's impossible to avoid a fight now, and Lightning agrees. Playmaker glances at Lightning angrily, and Ai begs Lightning to wait, as he's more level-headed than Windy. Lightning comments that judging by what Windy did, he no longer is (in the dub, Ai protests that Lightning would have been alone if he hadn't saved Windy; Lightning states that he's not as alone as Ai thinks). To Playmaker and Soulburner's shock, Bohman and Harlin materialize in the room, now both wearing military-style robes. Playmaker furiously asks what they did with Kolter's brother and where he is, and Lightning narrows his eyes, commenting that Playmaker means Jin Kolter, claiming that Jin has been in front of them from the start, and Playmaker gasps "What?" as Varis watches impassively. Golden light begins to ripple away from Lightning's program, and Soulburner gasps "No way..." as Playmaker realizes who Lightning's partner is. The light finishes peeling away from the program, and Kolter gasps "No way..." as well - Jin is standing before them in similar military garb to Bohman and Harlin, with Lightning standing on his Duel Disk (in the dub, Kolter directly states that Jin is Lightning's partner).

Featured Duel: Varis vs. Windy

Duel continues from the previous episode.

Varis has 300 LP and controls "Borreload Dragon" (3000/←↙↘→) in the Extra Monster Zone, as well as "Boot Sector Launch" in his Field Zone. Windy has 4000 LP and controls "Stormridership Rockbuster" (2300/↑↓) in the Extra Monster Zone and "Stormrider Harpiarm" (1300/1600) in Defense Position, in the Main Monster Zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Rockbuster" points to, as well as "Stormrider Turbulence" in his Field Zone.

Turn 3: Varis
As Varis took effect damage, he activates the effect of "Speedburst Dragon" in his hand, Special Summoning it (2400/600), then inflicting damage to Windy equal to the damage taken and gaining LP equal to half the damage inflicted (Windy: 4000 → 1000 LP, Varis: 300 → 1800 LP). "Speedburst Dragon" attacks and destroys "Stormridership Rockbuster" (Windy: 1000 → 900 LP).

Turn 4: Windy
As Windy controls no cards in his Spell & Trap Zone, he activates the Spell Card "Stormrider Return" to Special Summon a "Stormrider" monster from his GY. He Special Summons "Rockbuster" (2000/↑↓). The effect of "Stormrider Turbulence" increases the ATK of all "Stormrider" monsters on the field by 300 ("Rockbuster": 2000 → 2300 ATK). As Windy's LP is 1000 or less, he activates his Skill "Storm Access", accessing a Cyberse Link Monster at random from a nearby Data Storm and adding it to his Extra Deck. He obtains "Stormridership Bahamut Bomber" and adds it to his Extra Deck. Windy sets "Stormrider Harpiarm" and the Link-2 "Rockbuster" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Stormridership Bahamut Bomber" (2800 → 3100/↙↓↘) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Bahamut Bomber" was Special Summoned while Windy controls no cards in his Spell & Trap Zone, he activates its effect, destroying a card Varis controls and inflicting 500 damage to Varis. He destroys "Borreload Dragon" (Varis: 1800 → 1300 LP).

"Bahamut Bomber" attacks and destroys "Speedburst Dragon" (Varis: 1300 → 600 LP). As Windy controls no cards in his Spell & Trap Zone or Main Monster Zone, he activates the effect of "Stormrider Skyfisher" in his hand, Special Summoning it (???/0) in Defense Position, then Varis Sets a Spell/Trap Card from his GY to his field, but it cannot be activated. Varis Sets "Magic Cylinder". Windy activates the effect of "Bahamut Bomber", destroying a Spell/Trap Varis controls, then inflicting 500 damage to Varis. He destroys Set "Magic Cylinder" (Varis: 600 → 100 LP). As Windy controls "Turbulence", Windy activates the effect of "Skyfisher", returning it to his hand.

Turn 5: Varis
As Windy controls more monsters than Varis does, Varis activates the effect of "Boot Sector Launch", Special Summoning "Rokket" monsters with different names from his GY in Defense Position, up to the difference. Windy controls one more monster than him, so he Special Summons "Anesthrokket Dragon" (0/2200). The effect of "Boot Sector Launch" increases the ATK/DEF of all "Rokket" monsters on the field by 300 ("Anesthrokket": 0/2200 → 300/2500). Varis Normal Summons "Rokket Synchron" (0/??? → 300/???). As "Rokket Synchron" was Normal Summoned, Varis activates its effect, Special Summoning a Level 5 or higher DARK Dragon monster from his GY in Defense Position with its effects negated, but it is destroyed during the End Phase of this turn. He Special Summons the Level 6 "Speedburst Dragon" (2400/600).

Varis tunes the Level 1 Tuner "Rokket Synchron" with the Level 6 "Speedburst Dragon" and the Level 1 "Anesthrokket" to Synchro Summon the Level 8 "Borreload Savage Dragon" (3000/2500) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Borreload Savage Dragon" was Synchro Summoned, Varis activates its effect, equipping a Link Monster from his GY to it, then placing Borrel Counters on "Borreload Savage Dragon" equal to that card's Link Rating. He equips the Link-4 "Borreload Dragon" ("Borreload Savage Dragon": 0 → 4 Borrel Counters). The effect of "Borreload Savage Dragon" increases its ATK by half of the equipped monster's ("Borreload Savage Dragon": 3000 → 4500 ATK). Windy activates the effect of "Bahamut Bomber", destroying a card in Varis' Spell & Trap Zone, then inflicting 500 damage to Varis. He targets "Borreload Dragon", but as Windy activated a card or effect, Varis activates the effect of "Borreload Savage Dragon", removing a Borrel Counter from it to negate the activation ("Borreload Savage Dragon": 4 → 3 Borrel Counters). "Borreload Savage Dragon" attacks and destroys "Bahamut Bomber" (Windy: 900 → 0 LP).

Differences in adaptions

  • In the dub, Varis directly confirms the death of Windy's partner. In the Japanese version, it was never definitively stated, though everyone assumes that he was indeed killed.
  • Varis states that "Rokket Synchron" is a Tuner monster when he Summons it in the dub; he did not in the Japanese version, though Playmaker and Lightning realized that it was a Tuner regardless.
  • The effects of the virus are visually changed in the dub; the spikes are made to seem as they are constructed from purple data; Windy is not shown to have been lifted into the air, and his wounds are changed to purple, though the scene of him dissolving is otherwise unchanged.
  • In the dub, Windy mistakenly states that "Storm Access" can be activated when he has 1000 or less Attack Points instead of Life Points.
