Q&A Rulings

  • Q: When activating the effect of a "Backup Operator" that Special Summons it, can I target a Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Monster on my field?
A: When targeting a face-up monster on your field that a Link Monster points to with the effect of "Backup Operator", you may select a Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Monster. In that case, "Backup Operator" is Special Summoned normally, and the targeted monster returns to the Extra Deck instead of the hand.[1]
  • Q: When activating the effect of a "Backup Operator" that Special Summons it, can I target a Token on my field?
A: When targeting a face-up monster on your field that a Link Monster points to with the effect of "Backup Operator", you may select a Token. In that case, "Backup Operator" is Special Summoned normally, and the targeted Token disappears.[2]
A: In this scenario, the effect of "Backup Operator" resolves while the effect of "Vanity's Emptiness" is applying. In that case, since you cannot apply the part of the effect that Special Summons "Backup Operator" from your hand, you cannot return the targeted monster ("Altergeist Meluseek") to the hand and it remains on the field. Also, while the effect of "Vanity's Emptiness" is already applying, you cannot activate the effect of "Backup Operator".[3]
