Card Rulings:Calming Magic
OCG Rulings
- You can only declare the activation of this Spell Card as the first action you take at the start of your Main Phase.[1]
- If this card's effect is applied, neither player can activate cards or effects that Special Summon a monster(s) during Main Phase 1, the Battle Phase, or Main Phase 2. (The effect of "Gorz the Emissary of Darkness", "Monster Reborn", and "Call of the Haunted" etc. cannot be activated.)[1]
- If "Dandylion" is sent to the Graveyard while this card's effect is applying, because its effect is an effect that always activates, it activates and makes a Chain Link, but the "Fluff Tokens" are not Special Summoned when it resolves.[1]
- Even while the effect of "Calming Magic" is applying, the effect of "Evil Thorn" can be activated by Tributing it. In that case, the effect "inflict 300 damage to your opponent" is applied, but because "Calming Magic" prevents monsters from being Special Summoned, "you can Special Summon up to 2 "Evil Thorn" from your Deck in Attack Position" cannot be applied.[2]
- Even while the effect of "Calming Magic" is applying, the effect of "Giant Germ" activates and makes a Chain Link. In that case, the effect "Inflict 500 damage to your opponent" is applied, but because "Calming Magic" prevents monsters from being Special Summoned, "you can Special Summon any number of "Giant Germs" from your Deck in face-up Attack Position" cannot be applied.[3]
TCG Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Konami before the introduction of Problem-Solving Card Text. Since the introduction of the new text structure, individual card rulings for the TCG are no longer issued or actively maintained.[5] They have never been formally overturned as a whole and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules and do not contradict card text. |
- While “Calming Magic” is active, if an effect like “Giant Germ” triggers, you inflict damage but do not Special Summon.[4]

Rules posted online will be limited to super-complicated and really weird situations. Imagine going down to a dozen pages of card rules, instead of a thousand. It could happen.
