Card Rulings:Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World
OCG Rulings
- The effect "'You can Special Summon this card (from your Graveyard) by returning 1 "Dark World" monster you control to the hand, except "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World"' is not a continuous, trigger, ignition, nor a trigger effect. (This effect does not start a chain. Also, you must have 1 "Dark World" monster face-up on your side of the field to return to the hand to Special Summon this card. Returning the monster to the hand and Special Summoning this card do not happen simultaneously.[1]
- "'If this card is discarded to the Graveyard by a card effect: Target 1 card your opponent controls; destroy that target, then, if this card was discarded from the hand to your Graveyard by an opponent's card effect, look at 1 random card in your opponent's hand, then, if it was a monster, you can Special Summon it to your side of the field'" always activates whenever this card is discarded from the hand to the Graveyard by a card effect. This is a trigger effect. (This effect will also activate during the damage step. This effect targets 1 card on your opponent's side of the field.)[1]
- "'destroy that target'" and "'look at 1 random card in your opponent's hand, then, if it was a monster, you can Special Summon it to your side of the field'" do not happen at the same time.[1]
- Even if the card you look at is a Spell or Trap Card, "destroy that target" is not treated as the last thing to happen. "'Look at 1 random card in your opponent's hand" and "if it was a monster, you can Special Summon it to your side of the field" do not happen simultaneously.[1]
Q&A Rulings
- Q: While the effect of "Necrovalley" is applying, can I Special Summon a "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" from my Graveyard with its own effect?
- A: The effect of "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is an effect that is applied to a card(s) in the Graveyard, so you will not be able to apply the effect while "Necrovalley" is face-up on the field. (You cannot return a face-up “Dark World” monster from your field to the hand either.)[2]
- Q: A "Millennium-Eyes Restrict" equipped with "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is face-up in my opponent’s Monster Zone. In this situation, can I Special Summon another "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" from my Graveyard with its own effect?
- A: Yes, you can.[3]
- Q: If "Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World" is declared by "Prohibition", so that it "cannot be used", can you Special Summon "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" by returning that "Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World" to the hand?
- A: A "Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World" that cannot be used because it has been declared by "Prohibition" can be returned to the hand to special summon "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World".[4]
- Q: While "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is face-up on my field, my opponent activates the effect of their "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" when it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. If I activate "Dark World Brainwashing", but my opponent chains "Mystical Space Typhoon" and destroys it, what happens?
- A: When resolving the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", if "Dark World Brainwashing" itself has been destroyed, the effect is not applied. ("Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" remains on the field, and the effect of "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" banishes 1 card on the field normally.)[5]
- Q: While the effect of "Yosen Realm Whirlwind" is applying, can I Special Summon "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" with its own effect?
- A: "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" returns a face-up “Dark World” monster to the hand as part of the procedure for its effect that Special Summons itself, and this is not treated as being returned to the hand by a card effect. Therefore, even while the effect of "Yosen Realm Whirlwind" is applying, you can Special Summon "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" with its own effect normally.[6]
- Q: If "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is destroyed by battle with "Dark Ruler Ha Des" and sent to the Graveyard, can you special summon "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" using its own effect?
- A: Since the effects of "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" are negated in the Graveyard, it cannot be Special Summoned this way.[7]
- Q: While "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is face-up on my field, my opponent activates the effect of their "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" when it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. If I activate "Dark World Brainwashing", but my opponent chains "Compulsory Evacuation Device" and returns "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" to my hand, how does the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing" resolve?
- A: When resolving the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", if the targeted "Dark World" monster is no longer on the field, you cannot return it to the hand with the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", so the monster effect it was chained to remains unchanged. (The effect of "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" banishes 1 card on the field normally.)[8]
- Q: While "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is face-up on my field, my opponent activates the effect of their "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" when it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. If I activate "Dark World Brainwashing", but my opponent chains "Forbidden Lance" and makes "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" unaffected by Trap effects, how does the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing" resolve?
- A: When resolving the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", if the targeted "Dark World" monster is unaffected by Trap effects, you cannot return it to the hand with the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", so the monster effect it was chained to remains unchanged. ("Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" remains on the field, and the effect of "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" banishes 1 card on the field normally.)[9]
- Q: If my "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is discarded to the Graveyard by an opponent’s effect, so that I can look at 1 random card in my opponent’s hand and Special Summon it if it is a monster, how does this effect resolve if the card I pick is a monster that cannot be Special Summoned, like "Tsukuyomi"?
- A: In this case, "Tsukuyomi" will remain in your opponent’s hand. (It will not be Special Summoned by the effect of "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World".)[10]
