Q&A Rulings
- Q: When activating "Grinning Grave Virus", can I Tribute a DARK monster with less than 500 ATK?
- A: The cost of activating "Grinning Grave Virus" is to Tribute a DARK monster on your field with 3000 or less ATK, but since the effect destroys an opponent's card for every 500 ATK the Tributed monster had, you cannot activate it by Tributing a monster with less than 500 ATK.[1]
- Q: There are no cards in my opponent's hand, and 5 cards remaining in my opponent's Deck. In this situation, can I activate "Grinning Grave Virus" by Tributing a monster such as "Darkest Diabolos, Lord of the Lair" that has 3000 ATK?
- A: If the total number of cards in your opponent's hand/Deck is 5 or less, you can activate "Grinning Grave Virus" by Tributing a monster with 3000 or more ATK such as "Darkest Diabolos, Lord of the Lair". In this case, your opponent must destroy a total of 6 cards in their hand and/or Deck, so they destroy as many as possible. (In this scenario, your opponent will destroy all 5 cards in their Deck.)[2]
- Q: "Necrovalley" is face-up in the Field Zone. In this situation, if "Grinning Grave Virus" is activated, is its effect negated by "Necrovalley"?
- A: Since the effect of "Grinning Grave Virus" is not treated as one that affects cards in the Graveyard, it is not negated by the effect of "Necrovalley".[3]
- Q: "Macro Cosmos" is face-up in my opponent's Spell & Trap Zone, and its effect that banishes any card that would be sent to the GY is applying. In this situation, can I activate "Grinning Grave Virus"?
- A: Even if the effect of "Macro Cosmos" is applying, you can activate "Grinning Grave Virus". In that case, the monster Tributed for its cost along with any cards destroyed by its effect are banished instead of sent to the GY. If any of the cards destroyed by the effect of "Grinning Grave Virus" are banished instead of sent to the GY, they are not affected by the part of its effect that prevents their effects from activating in the GY during the turn they are destroyed. (For example, if Secret Six Samurai - Fuma is destroyed and banished, its effect that Special Summons a "Six Samurai" monster from the Deck can be activated.)[4]
- Q: My "Lilith, Lady of Lament" is face-up in my Monster Zone, and has an original ATK of 1000 due to its own effect. In this situation, if I Tribute that "Lilith, Lady of Lament" to activate "Grinning Grave Virus", how many of my opponent's cards in their hand/Deck will be destroyed?
- A: In this scenario, since "Lilith, Lady of Lament" has 1000 ATK when it is Tributed, the effect of "Grinning Grave Virus" will destroy 2 cards in your opponent's hand/Deck.[5]
- Q: During this turn, my "Honest" was destroyed and sent to the GY by the effect of my opponent's "Grinning Grave Virus". If I activate "Beckoning Light" and add that "Honest" from my GY to my hand, can I then activate the effect of that "Honest" during this turn?
- A: When cards are destroyed and sent to the GY by the effect of "Grinning Grave Virus", the part of its effect that prevents those cards from activating their effects only applies to effects that activate in the GY. In this scenario, when "Honest" is added back to your hand by the effect of "Beckoning Light", it is no longer treated as having been destroyed and sent to the GY by the effect of "Grinning Grave Virus", and its effect can be activated from the hand normally.[6]
