Q&A Rulings

A: When applying the effect of "Lair of Darkness" that allows you to Tribute an opponent's DARK monster when activating a card or effect, the Tributed monster must be an appropriate monster to Tribute for that effect. Since the effect of "Doomcaliber Knight" is activated by Tributing itself, you cannot apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness" to Tribute an opponent's DARK monster instead.[1]
A: When applying the effect of "Lair of Darkness" that allows you to Tribute an opponent's DARK monster when activating a card or effect, the Tributed monster must be an appropriate monster to Tribute for that effect. Since "Majespecter Tornado" is activated by Tributing a WIND Spellcaster monster, you cannot apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness" to Tribute an opponent's DARK monster instead.[2]
A: In this scenario, since your opponent's "Hunter Dragon" is unaffected by the effects of Spell Cards, it is also unaffected by the effect of "Lair of Darkness" that allows you to Tribute it when activating a card or effect. Therefore, in this scenario, you cannot Tribute that "Hunter Dragon" when activating a card or effect.[3]
  • Q: During my opponent's End Phase, the effect of "Lair of Darkness" activates, and 2 "Torment Tokens" are Special Summoned to my opponent's field. In this case, which player chooses the Main Monster Zones to place the "Torment Tokens" in?
A: When a "Torment Token" is Special Summoned by the effect of your "Lair of Darkness", even if Special Summoned to your opponent's field, you (the one who activated the effect of "Lair of Darkness") chooses which Main Monster Zones they are Special Summoned in.[4]
A: "Darkest Diabolos, Lord of the Lair" has an effect that prevents the opponent from Tributing it or targeting it with card effects. In this scenario, if "Darkest Diabolos, Lord of the Lair" is face-up on your opponent's field, you cannot Tribute it when applying the effect of "Lair of Darkness".[5]
A: When activating the effect of "Enemy Controller" that takes control of an opponent's monster until the End Phase, there must be a monster on the field that can be Tributed for its cost, as well as a face-up monster on your opponent's field to target with that effect. In this scenario, since "Vanity's Fiend" is the only monster on your opponent's field, you can only activate the effect of "Enemy Controller" if you Tribute your own monster, and target that "Vanity's Fiend". (Thus, you cannot apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness".)[6]
A: When applying the effect of "Lair of Darkness" that allows you to Tribute an opponent's DARK monster when activating a card or effect, the Tributed monster must be an appropriate monster to Tribute for that effect. Since the effect of "Decode Talker" is activated by Tributing a monster that it points to, you can apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness" and Tribute your opponent's "Prometheus, King of the Shadows" in this scenario.[7]
A: When activating the effect of "Duke Shade, the Sinister Shadow Lord" that Special Summons it from your hand, you can apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness" and Tribute 1 of your opponent's DARK monsters. The effect of "Lair of Darkness" will only allow you to Tribute 1 monster, but if the effect of Soul Exchange was also applied, depending on which card's effect you apply, you may Tribute 2 of your opponent's monsters. Therefore, in this scenario, you can Tribute your opponent's "Mist Archfiend" and "Archfiend Cavalry" when activating the effect of "Duke Shade, the Sinister Shadow Lord".[8]
A: As long as "Lair of Darkness" is face-up in the Field Zone, even if no monsters were Tributed during a turn, its effect will still activate and create a Chain. (However, since no monsters were Tributed, no "Torment Tokens" are Special Summoned.)[9]
  • Q: Both players have "Lair of Darkness" face-up in their Field Zones. During the End Phase, how does the effect of each copy that Special Summons "Torment Tokens" activate and resolve?
A: If each player has "Lair of Darkness" face-up in their Field Zone, their effects activated during the End Phase do not activate on the same Chain, but rather activate and resolve separately.[10]
A: The owner of a "Torment Token" is the player who activated the effect of "Lair of Darkness" that Special Summoned it. (Even if it is Special Summoned to the opponent's field, there is no difference.) In this scenario, you are the owner of the "Torment Token", so when the effect of "Owner's Seal" is applied, you gain control of it.[11]

  • Q: When I activate "Black Illusion Ritual" to Ritual Summon, can I apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness" in my Field Zone and Tribute an opponent's face-up DARK monster instead of my own?
A: The effect of "Lair of Darkness" allows you to Tribute an opponent's face-up DARK monster instead of your own to activate a card or effect. The effect "Black Illusion Ritual" Tributes monsters for the Ritual Summon when it resolves. (Tributing is not a cost.) Therefore, you cannot apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness" when performing a Ritual Summon.[12]
A: The effect of "Lair of Darkness" Special Summons a Token for each monster that was Tributed this turn while "Lair of Darkness" was face-up on the field. Even if you Tribute a monster from your hand for a Ritual Summon, as in this scenario, a "Torment Token" will be Special Summoned.[13]
A: Even if monsters were Tributed while the effects of "Lair of Darkness" were being negated by "Imperial Order", as in this scenario, the Tributed monsters are still Tributed while "Lair of Darkness" was face-up on the field. During the End Phase, since the effect of "Imperial Order" is no longer applying, a "Torment Token" will be Special Summoned.[14]
A: As in this scenario, if a monster was Tributed by a card that was chained to the activation of "Lair of Darkness", it is not treated as a monster that was Tributed while "Lair of Darkness" was face-up on the field. In this case, since no monsters were Tributed after "Lair of Darkness" resolved, the effect of "Lair of Darkness" will not Special Summon any "Torment Tokens" during the End Phase.[15]
A: To activate the effect of "Voltanis the Adjudicator" in your hand, you must Tribute all monsters on your field as the cost, so normally you cannot Tribute any of your opponent's monsters by applying the effect of "Lair of Darkness". In this scenario, since there are 2 monsters on your field, you can only activate the effect of "Voltanis the Adjudicator" by Tributing those 2 monsters. However, in a situation where you have no monsters on your field and wish to activate the effect of "Voltanis the Adjudicator", you can apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness" and Tribute only 1 DARK monster on your opponent's field.[16]
