Forum:8.9 Japan earthquake

For anyone who may have missed news on this (and I don't see how you could have, to be completely honest), a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck several miles off the coast of Japan near Sendai on March 11 at about 05:46 UTC (14:46 local time). The earthquake triggered a tsunami that reached 10 meters (23 feet) in some places in Japan, and as much as 7-10 feet in Hawaii. It has also been followed up by a number of aftershocks, with more than a dozen stronger than 6.0 (a few of them stronger than 7.0). There are about 500 confirmed dead and over 700 missing so far. There have been a number of people in the anime, manga, and related industries who have checked in in some fashion since the quake to confirm that they are all right; ANN is keeping a list of them (as of the time of writing, Kazuki Takahashi isn't on the list). ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 08:21, March 12, 2011 (UTC)

Thank god Kazuki makes the best cards, though it is sad that many people had to pass away.71.194.60.36 (talk) 16:58, March 12, 2011 (UTC)

"as of the time of writing, Kazuki Takahashi isn't on the list"
Anyhow, Kazuki Takahashi is now on the list. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 00:31, March 14, 2011 (UTC)
Oh, thank gawd Takahashi and Satoshi Tajiri are alive...although still devestated by the death toll in Japan. Man, you can't believe how many death rumors I've heard about Tajiri, so I'm all-around happy that those are put to rest. Now, I hope no more disasters strike Japan, since they need to recover after that earthquake + nuclear meltdowns... Fluffiness (talkcontribs) 00:38, March 14, 2011 (UTC)
That's good to hear; I've been periodically rechecking the list for him and a few other people (Eiichiro Oda (OK!), Masashi Kishimoto, Rumiko Takahashi), but I hadn't checked for a few hours.
Fluffiness: Japan has a ridiculous earthquake-prepared building code that has allowed them to sail through magnitude 7 earthquakes whereas 6 or even 5 quakes might bring other locales to their knees. You can bet their building code will be even more stringent and advanced once they start rebuilding; the only reason this quake hit them so hard is because it is unprecedented in that area in recent (geologically speaking) history. As for the reactors, as I understand, the meltdowns do not actually pose significant risk of overall reactor failure/breach/explosion/whatever (though they are, obviously, keeping very close eyes on them). ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 01:25, March 14, 2011 (UTC)
  • I read today that over 2,000 bodies have washed up due to the horrible tsunami following the earthquake. I can only say that I hope peace comes to those who have died, and that the toll stays as low as possible. It's truly horrifying, and it makes me thankful to live in a country void of natural disasters. Anyone who can, and is interested in giving aid, you can do so here.--YamiWheeler (talkcontribs) 22:28, March 15, 2011 (UTC)

Actually, if you're talking about the U.S, we have floods, wildfires, earthquakes, tornados, avalanches(rarely), and so on. MachinaMan (talkcontribs) 22:44, March 16, 2011 (UTC)

Yami's statement got me curious, so I nosed around some earlier. As far as I can tell, he lives in the UK. According to Wikipedia, the UK seems to experience such disasters as earthquakes, tsunamis, storms and tornadoes, and avalanches. I'm not seeing indications that these have any tendency of being nearly as large-scale or frequent as the US and some other countries have them, though. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:16, March 17, 2011 (UTC)
