Forum:Massive Multilingualism Idea

I was making me a sandwich ten minutes ago when I had an idea that I find brillant lol. Basically, I keep jumping between french, german, spanish and english yugioh website and I keep seeing that people quote a lot this Wiki which is a good thing. However I see so many people saying "What does it mean, I don't speak english!". SO here's my idea. In every card page, (and in every sub pages like rulings, tips, trivia etc.) we any ie could add a button for every main languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean and Japanese). Once you clicked on that button, you got the same page. But, for example, if you're on Sangan page, instead of having the scan of the english card, you get the one from the language you choose. What's more, the lore you get to see (automatically, without clicking on "hide") is from the language you choose. Same for rulings! So many french speaking people keep asking me about rulings because they can't translate it. The button could be flags or stuff like that.

I know that this idea would be a pain in the *** to create and I wouldn't have any ideas of how to do it but it would attract so many more people... In the case, for example, that we don't have the japanese card of sangan, it stays in english but with the japanese lore. Actually, apart from the image idea, it would be more usefull for every rulings and tips articles which can be easily translated as we're many users who can speak a few languages. Anyway, I'm waiting for your feedback. Wilimut TalkMail Paris, 18:40, August 4, 2011 (UTC)

Lemme get this straight; you're thought of main article (As Sangan) required same process as the main article (Main Page) with 5D's, GX and Original character box, only on Image that look like in various language and have their lore post next to the place? --FredCat 18:44, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
Kind of but also including every important pages such as rulings, trivia, tips, appearances etc which don't have any translations comparing to the lores or names. And those could be really helpful in other languages. Wilimut TalkMail Paris, 18:45, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
That's... very interesting idea. Time to alert the Admins and let's set up the hell meet here. --FredCat 18:47, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
Images, I think, would be fairly easy to do once the initial framework is set up, though it would require editing every card page which would make use of it (to add card images for each language). Lores and what-have-you, though, would probably require rolling some of our own Javascript code, though they wouldn't require edits except where the information was missing anyways. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 21:38, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
What about subpages of every cards such as rulings and stuff? Do you like the idea in general? Wilimut TalkMail Paris, 21:41, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
That's one I agreed to; though I knew this is for English only... but this site is way overfreaking popular than rest of the other "Wikia" that I maybe never ever f-ing visiting... --FredCat 21:46, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
Doing all the subpages would require lots of translating (not for e.g. galleries or names, but definitely for trivia and rulings), and I'm not too sure how it'd all work from a technical point of view.
The ideal solution would be for Wikia to have sufficiently-active YGO wikis in each of the other languages, so that we could all link between each other and no individual wiki needs to try to do all of the work. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:24, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah the problem is that it isn't the case at all and I really don't think that it will happen one day. I don't mind doing all the french translations it's not that hard. What's more, uploading files from other languages doesn't need to be done. I mean, with that system, if you wan to see a card by clicking on the spanish button, if we don't have the spanish image, it simply shows the english one. Yes, but that's not what I'm getting at. With this functionality, we would need to add a new "image" parameter for each language version of a card ("fr_image", "sp_image", "ja_image", etc.) to {{CardTable2}} (along with the necessary "width" varieties), and then edit each card page to use these parameters before the functionality could work properly.
The fallback system, on the other hand, would be pretty simple - if an image for a given language isn't present on a card page, the tab for that language simply wouldn't appear (it gets a bit more complicated when we add lores and names into the mix, assuming we want a single set of tabs for all three, but that's the basic idea). ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 06:07, August 5, 2011 (UTC)
