Guide[edit]

  • Examples in grey text show old styles or formats, and are followed by the current format in black text. When using this as a quick reference, you should ignore grey text.

Sitewide usage[edit]

Old example: <ruby><rb>Sp</rb><rp>(</rp><rt>スピードスペル</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby>
New example: Sp
  • Non-Japanese Ruby text must specify the language using its ISO 639 language code ()
  • For music, we only take samples, which must have their licensing properly noted (for example: File:Calm Academy.ogg)
  • For videos, since they tend to hold stricter copyrights, <youtube></youtube> tags are preferred instead of uploading here. {1}

Main card pages / card table related[edit]

  • Video game names and lores should be provided even if they are exactly the same as the OCG/TCG card name/lore.
  • For anime/manga cards, the real lore should be the same as the card lore provided in the most recent videogame it appeared in (if any), and not the same as the anime/manga lore.
  • Anime-only cards use the animelore/jpanimelore parameters, not the lore/jplore parameters.
  • Japanese images are preferred for anime cards, as they show more details (lore/effect and Type, for instance). {1} {2}. Official website (OW) images are only to be used when the best available anime image is poor.
  • In lists and tables, rarity abbreviations (e.g. "SR" for "Super Rare") should be used to reduce redundancy and save space. In prose, the first occurrence of a rarity should be spelled out and linked (e.g. Super Rare).
  • Characters in card page names: {1}
    • Straight quotation marks and apostrophes (" " and ') are preferred, not the fancy/curly ones (“ ” and ’).
    • The hyphen-minus sign (-) is preferred, instead of em dashes, en dashes, negative signs (–, — and -), or other dash lookalikes.
    • Octothorpes (#), opening and closing square brackets ([]), and opening and closing curly braces ({}) cannot be used in page names for technical reasons and should simply be omitted.
      • Octothorpes in card names should not be in superscript:
Jinzo #7
Jinzo #7
  • Effect types:
Add each effect as a list, including duplicate types, and in the exact order, e.g.
|effect = Summon, Trigger, Trigger
Also, Spell and Traps cards can have effect types as well, such as Trigger-like and Ignition-like (e.g. Blackwing - Boobytrap and Dragon Ravine) {1}
The parameters for these Spell and Traps cards are the same as the parameters used for monster effects, e.g.
|effect = Ignition, Trigger
  • Japanese lore:
|japlore
|jplore
  • Card lores should generally not be updated until newer lores are actually known (the card is reprinted or a newer lore is announced). So, don't go to a page with an old card where Konami has not announced a reprint and apply Problem-Solving Card Text to it. This applies to the lores for old anime and manga cards, as well. {1}
  • The English card image takes priority if it is available, and the image of the card from the newest set is preferred. If a card is released in the same set and has multiple rarities, avoid Ultimate Rares and Ghost Rares if possible. The quality of the image does not matter; if it is bad, it should encourage someone to click on the image and then use the 'Upload a new version of this file' button to upload a clearer one.
For anime-only cards, the clearest Japanese screenshot is preferred, but if a Tag Force image is available, we use that. Official website (OW) images can be used if the best possible anime image is still poor.
For manga-only cards, the clearest image should be used. {1}
  • Anime appearance syntax:
First old example: 106/116/125
Second old example:
The new example: 106, 116, 125
  • Attack names and effect names from the anime and manga do not belong here. All of them should go on the page Attack name. These names must be official names used in the anime, manga or video games. Names users make up themselves are not to be included.

Archetype and series[edit]

  • An "archetype" is determined by a card effect that only applies to cards with a certain string in their Japanese name; this string will appear in quotes (「」 on Japanese cards; "" on English cards).
    • That card is then a support or anti-support (depending on its effect) card for the archetype its effect mentions.
    • A card that supports each member of an archetype individually is not support for that archetype (e.g. "Limiter Removal" is not a support card for the "Ancient Gear" archetype).
    • All cards with that string in their Japanese name are members of that archetype, including Spell and Trap Cards (even if they aren't actually affected by any of the archetype's support or anti-support cards).
    • Even if a card's English name matches an archetype's English name when its Japanese name does not, it is still not a member of that archetype (for example, "Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1" is not a member of the "Guardian" archetype because its Japanese name, "とりでまもよくりゅう", does not contain "ガーディアン").
  • Archetypes usually have an underlying "theme".
    • Cards do not have to fit this theme to be a member of the archetype; they only need to have the required string in their Japanese name.
    • Cards that fit this theme but do not have the required string in their Japanese names are related to the archetype; they are not members.
  • Groups of cards without support or anti-support cards, such as "Monarch", "King" and "Grepher", are series.
    • The rule of three is used as a baseline for what constitutes a series. {1} {2}
    • Series are determined entirely by their "theme"; most often, a series consists of a group of related cards used by a character in the anime or manga.
    • A card's Japanese name does not determine whether it is a member of a series. For example, "Big Eye" is not a member of the "King" series because it doesn't fit the theme.
  • Cards are usually either a member of a series or not related to it at all; most series will not have any related cards.
    • An otherwise-unrelated card that has a name similar to other series members, is still not a member of the series or even related to it.
    • Cards that do not totally fit a series' theme are related to the series. For example, "Mobius Castle" and "Lightning Crash" are related to the Monarch series as they have multiple things in common with members of the series, but do not totally fit its theme.
    • Card storylines have their own page, do not qualify as either archetypes or series, and should not use the archetype or archrelated parameters.
  • A card that appears on or features another card does not make either card related to any archetype or series the other is part of (e.g. "Ojama Yellow", "Ojama Green" and "Ojama Black" appearing on "Harpies' Hunting Ground" does not make them related to the "Harpie" archetype, nor does it make any "Harpie" related to the "Ojama" archetype). This is also true for two cards that appear together in a third card's artwork (e.g. "Mokey Mokey" and "Ojama Yellow" appearing on "The League of Uniform Nomenclature" does not make "Mokey Mokey" related to the "Ojama" archetype, nor "Ojama Yellow" related to the "Mokey Mokey" archetype). These should instead be mentioned on the cards' Trivia pages.
  • Categorization of a group as an archetype or a series is handled automatically by Infobox archetype; these categories should not be added to pages manually (if a page is missing an infobox, one should be added to the page instead of a category).

File naming[edit]

Card images[edit]

  • List of symbols/characters to include or omit:
Keep: Ω α β γ à ã æ é É Ü ö ü ú (all letters and numbers, including those from other languages or with diacritic marks)
Remove: - . , ' " : ・ / ~ & = ? ! % ☆ (and space) (all punctuation and special characters)
  • File name format:
Old layout: For OCG/TCG card images: There is no dash (-) between the card name and the set abbreviation (CardNameSET-LN-R-ED.png)
New Layout: For OCG/TCG card images: There is a dash (-) between the card name and the set abbreviation (CardName-SET-LN-R-ED.png) {1}
  • Official Proxies use OP; for example File:AlexandriteDragon-PHSW-EN-OP.jpg (CardName-SET-LN-OP.png). Unlike regular card images, rarities and edition tags aren't included (You can't tell R from ScR, proxy images technically don't have rarities anyway, and no card to date has had two proxy images from the same set with different rarities or editions). A source must be provided somewhere when uploading these (preferably on the image description page), or they may be deleted. {1}

Anime screenshots[edit]

  • If the image is not of a card or a NC monster, screenshots from the anime should have names with this format:
Sx### Description.jpg or Sx### Description.png

S is the series.

### is the episode number.

For example: File:5Dx154 Team 5D's panorama.jpg and File:GXx013 Doctor.jpg

However, the naming of anime screenshots and manga images are not heavily enforced. A sensible file name is sufficient.{1}

Manga images[edit]

  • If the image is not that of a card or a NC monster, images from the manga should have names with this format:
S-### Description.jpg or S-### Description.png

S is the series.

### is the chapter number.

For example: File:GX-001 Jaden VS Ryuga.jpg and File:D-001 Duel Monsters at school.jpg

Video game images[edit]

  • File name format:
Old layouts: CardNameVG-Game-LN.png and CardName-VG-Game-LN.png
New layout {1}: CardName-Game-LN-VG.png

Booster pack images[edit]

  • Booster pack images should use the following format:
SET-BoosterLN.jpg or SET-BoosterLN.png

LN is the two letter language code.

  • JP = Japanese
  • EN = English

For example: File:GENF-BoosterEN.png and File:PHSW-BoosterJP.png

Episode and chapter articles[edit]

  • Do not overlink. A given term should only be linked once per section. Do not link to SMW lists such 1500 ATK Monster Cards and Cannot be destroyed by battle under any circumstances. Those are to be accessed via card search categories.
  • The lead paragraph should use the name used in the English adaptation of the episode/chapter, followed by the Japanese name. Air/print dates are listed afterwards. A short summary should then be listed, using episode summary or chapter summary.
  • Articles should use character and card names used in the English adaptations of each series. Events which take place in the original version take precedence over events that take place in the dub, however. Dub changes should be listed in parentheses in the "Summary" section. Be specific. Do not simply tell us something was changed. Tell us what it was changed from and what it was changed to. Simply saying dialogue was removed does not suffice. What was removed? If a card has a TCG name, but the English anime/manga uses a different name, the name used in the anime should be used, with the link pointing to the TCG name with a pipe (yes, avoid the redirect. Because hovertext is awesome).
  • The summary section should provide more than an overview of what happens in an episode or chapter. Any important pieces of dialogue should be mentioned, and in the best-case scenario, a blow-by-blow retelling of what happened in the episode. Summaries which do not do this should be marked using incomplete.
  • The Featured Duel section should provide a blow-by-blow of every move performed in a Duel, with no other elements present unless they directly affected the Duel. Dialogue that takes place during the Duel goes in the summary section. Instead, a link can be provided to an article on the Duel itself if such an article exists. The Duel should be prose, not written as a list.
  • The Featured cards section should list every card shown in the episode or chapter, with debuts in italics. A debut is defined as the card's first appearance in the anime and manga in general, not in each series. For example, "Reload" debuted in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX episode 05353: "Back to Duel". Its appearance in Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL episode 03131: "Life is a Carnival: Part 1" does not constitute a debut. Any appearance counts, including cards shown in the hand, while searching a Deck, or in other places, such as briefcases or cards flying through the air. Duel spirits count as appearances though they should be in their own separate list in the Featured cards section.
  • If a source for such can be provided, a cast list should be given in its own separate section.
  • If mistakes were made in either version of the episode, a section can be added to list them. Please specify which version(s) has the mistake. Card name changes are not mistakes. "Phantom Skyblaster" being called "Illusion Brigadier" is not a mistake. It's a name change. In such cases, please pipe the links: Illusion Brigadier
  • Card effects in the anime and manga often differ. This is not to be noted in episode articles. Cards going against their written Japanese anime lores should be, though.
  • If the episode had a preview which displayed things that did not happen when the episode aired, a "Differences from the preview" section should list those changes.
  • If an episode is directly based on a chapter, or vice versa (some DM articles and some ZEXAL articles), a "Differences from the manga" or "Differences from the anime" section should be presented.

Card Tips[edit]

  • Anime-only cards do not need tips.
  • The Advanced Format heading is redundant and should not be added.
  • == Traditional Format == section goes after the Advanced Format tips; if the card is Forbidden or Illegal, neither heading is needed.
  • == Video games == section goes after the card game formats. This section should only contain tips using video game-only cards.
  • Quotation marks are to be added around all card names and archetype names. See also: Manual of style
  • Overlinking should not be done, one of each link per section is enough. The link in the navigation box also counts towards this.
  • Tips should be concise and the layout should be spaced out, walls of text are bad.
Layout sample: {1}

Card Rulings[edit]

  • A valid reference/source must be provided for all additions or changes, otherwise they will be reverted.
  • All new rulings must be an exact quote of an official ruling. Any misspellings or grammar mistakes must not be fixed, instead they are marked with Sic.
  • Rulings made by users are not to be included, even if they are correct, and will be removed on sight.
  • For more information, see the Card Rulings policy.

Card Gallery[edit]

  • NC (non-card) images of Monster Cards should not be deleted or removed from the gallery just because there is an image of the card. They should both be kept in the gallery page, next to each other. {1}
  • Gallery tag: <gallery widths="175px">
Other parameters, including "align", "perrow", and "heights", are usually unnecessary and should be removed. {1}
Layout sample: {1}

Card Appearances[edit]

If a card appears in multiple series, headers with the series name should be above. Do NOT link subheaders.

Cards that are actually played during a Duel should be listed using this format.

  • In number, character name played this card against opponent. List what the card did during the Duel and how it affected other cards. If the card required one to send or discard other cards to the Graveyard or a similar action, and the cards used for the cost were shown, tell use that.

Cards seen in should be listed using this format:

  • In number, this card can be seen in character name's hand after [when this was shown in relation to a move in the Duel]. Listing who the opponent was is optional. Same format for Deck searches more or less. And the same for those that are seen elsewhere.

If a card is used by an opponent in a video game, that should be listed under a video game header using this format:

  • In name of game, name of character uses this. You may go into detail about how the card can interact with other cards in that character's Deck if you wish.

Card Errata[edit]

Old example:

New example {1}:

Discussion / Comments[edit]

Created from observations and discussions. Any new section suggestions, comments, questions, etc? (stickying after any error checks/a few comments) -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 05:01, November 8, 2011 (UTC)

Done lots of cleanup/tweaking/rewriting (particularly around the archetype/series section); any comments or complaints? =D ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 06:27, November 8, 2011 (UTC)
No complaints, just noticed a few things I forgot about. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 06:57, November 8, 2011 (UTC)

If it's not popular enough for the Image Policy, it can go here. Added anime screenshot and manga image naming. (Booster pack image naming might be popular enough to be moved into the image policy, but added it here for now.)
As for boxes... File:EXVC-BoosterBoxFR.jpg or File:HA05-BoxEN.jpg..... -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 13:30, November 14, 2011 (UTC)

I don't think we really need to worry about whether something is "popular" enough to be added to the image policy; if someone feels like adding it (and the bit they're wanting to add isn't disagreed with), they should feel free to. That being said, the current layout of the image policy isn't exactly conducive to additions; I've been intending to rewrite it for quite a while now but haven't gotten around to it.
As for BoosterBox versus Box... *points at Starter and Structure Decks* ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:16, November 14, 2011 (UTC)
File:5DS1-DeckEN.png and File:StructureDeckSD4-JP.jpg are used there, but HA05 isn't a deck so...
Also, what is the difference between <br /> and <br>?
IIRC, I seen Deltaneos use <br />. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 21:51, November 14, 2011 (UTC)
My comment was meant to be in favor of "Box", guess I should have actually come out and said it. =)
There is no difference, really. <br> is the original HTML tag; <br /> is the self-closing XHTML tag. All browsers (well, maybe not some pre-IE5.5 browsers, but no one cares about them any more) interpret both the same, so which you use doesn't really matter (and even less so in MediaWiki, since the tags get stripped and re-inserted during parsing anyways, which forces one particular style, regardless of which is used) - ultimately, it's personal preference. I like the self-closing version, since it makes the tags a bit easier to pick out in markup in my experience, but YMMV. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:33, November 14, 2011 (UTC)
Good to know that I haven't been breaking things by using <br> all the time.
(and "span id" tags because half the time direct links do not work for some reason when the title has a space in the name)
-Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 00:13, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
How in the blue hell did I miss this topic's existence for almost a week despite checking the forum index daily? I'll have stuff to comment on tomorrow, and will use this opportunity to work on a style guide for episode/chapter articles, since we have discussed that in the past. Ooh, I could do a Card Appearances section too! Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 04:01, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
Added episode/chapter section. Any comments? Feel free to edit it. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 16:02, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
I made a few edits, do they look all right? (I'm not very familiar with the preferred format of ep/ch articles, so I'm somewhat limited in what I can do here) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 17:26, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
Looks fine. When I was talking about the differences in the manga, I actually meant that to apply to only anime articles, but there's really no reason not to put it in the manga articles too, actually.
In regards to card effect changes from anime/manga to TCG: Would anyone object to the creation of templates that inform the reader that an article is NOT about the TCG, so the card effects may be different (regardless, one is really needed for Duelist Kingdom especially)? I've never been keen on listing each change in the episode articles since some get really long as a result. Then there's examples that I'm not sure we need to list, but sometimes do. If a card has a different effect, but it's TCG effect would applied in a certain situation, do we list that? See the Notes in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX - Episode 140 involving "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo" for an example. I really think the animelore and mangalore parameters in the CardTable should suffice, but I'm open to any arguments against that. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 17:40, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
I considered adding a note above to the effect of "anime/manga effects are separate from OCG/TCG effects", but ultimately didn't know how best to word it or where best to insert it... Personally, I find it hard to believe how much people fixate on the fact that effects change between (and even within!) media; it really should go without saying. =P ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:09, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
Me too. It's to the point that between this wiki and the "New Rules as the Plot Demands" page on TVTropes, I have a fixation with preventing the fixation. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 19:02, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I like the notice template idea. Something like an ambox with the following?
This Duel uses {{#switch:{}
| Duelist Kingdom = Duelist Kingdom rules
| Battle City = Battle City rules
| {Duel Monsters rules}
}} which differ from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official and Trading Card Games.
Some cards may also have different effects see their articles or appearances pages for more information.

.

I think the Duel Monsters article needs expansion to cover the rules and rule changes. On a slightly unrelated note, I might just be overlooking things, but has the name "Duel Monsters" been used in the anime or manga since the start of GX. -- Deltaneos (talk) 12:57, December 10, 2011 (UTC)
Right, something like that. As much as I like the "Notes" system, it still gets messy at some points. Though I do support keeping such Notes in Decklist articles (specifically for card types, I mean. "This card was played as a Normal Monster", etc), since when those aren't there, things tend to get moved around.
You may be right. I don't actually recall ever hearing the card game called that in 5D's or ZEXAL. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 16:02, December 10, 2011 (UTC)
Card Appearances section added. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 15:34, November 16, 2011 (UTC)
"If it appears in only one series, should we use a header or not?" should be down here in the discussion right?
and those are links... so, made them look more like links, or was it deliberate that it was 1 [ and 1 ]? -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 06:38, November 17, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, it should be down here. Moving it now.
Not sure what you mean. I deliberately didn't make them look like links, because I didn't think of using the nowiki tags when I was writing it. *shrugs*
So should we use headers for card appearances if the card appears in only one series (or just video games)? I generally don't, though that's only because I never really gave it any thought. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 07:07, November 17, 2011 (UTC)
I don't mind either way. Probably not needed since you generally tell where its from by even only reading the first few words, and that most cards only appear in one. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 08:05, November 17, 2011 (UTC)

For Card Tips pages, lists should go at the very end. --Golden Key (talkcontribs) 00:37, November 20, 2011 (UTC)

Yes, but I wondered if it needs a heading (== List ==) or line (----) to separate it, because most people don't see it as a list on the edit page. I've seen those two being used (but rarely) and most don't even use it. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 00:44, November 20, 2011 (UTC)
Speaking of headings, what is your opinion on making pages look like this? In my many travels I've only seen a handful of pages that are categorized that way. I don't follow it myself, and it seems like a hassle to update everything to follow such an outline. But on the other hand, it does look cleaner, and several pages would benefit from following that model. --Golden Key (talkcontribs) 01:12, November 20, 2011 (UTC)
I don't mind them; but they should have 3 = in the heading, so they don't clash with the 2 = headings used in the formats. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 01:17, November 20, 2011 (UTC)

Can I make a suggestion for tips pages, even though it's unlikely to be in effect on the majority of tips pages any time in the near future? I think we should try to avoid using second person. e.g. don't say:

  • Use this card on your opponent's turn to destroy their strongest monster.
  • If you use "X" with "Y" you will have 3000 more Life Points than your opponent.

Do say:

  • This card can be used on the opponent's turn to destroy their strongest monster.
  • By using "X" with "Y", the controller will have 3000 more Life Points than their opponent.

Indeed, I don't think second person should be used on any articles, but tips are where it most frequently occurs. -- Deltaneos (talk) 19:52, November 23, 2011 (UTC)

That's something I've noticed as well. Second-person has no place in articles 99.9% of the time, and we should indeed discourage its use. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:12, November 23, 2011 (UTC)

Spell and Traps card effect types updated, stickied, and Attack names line might need a little elaboration/expansion. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 06:11, November 29, 2011 (UTC)

Errata Pages[edit]

Could we get an example of what an errata page is supposed to look like? Because those things are like snowflakes right now. --Golden Key (talkcontribs) 15:34, December 26, 2011 (UTC)

Image: should be File: now (wikia updates)
A space between the parameter, = sign and values is something that has always been done to pretty much every large template that is used (except the errata tables; which should be changed)
Those two should be obvious ones.
The ones that may need a discussion on are:
Whether or not a space is needed between types (anti wall of text)
and the over-elaborate lore colours.
-Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 13:30, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
I would argue that we encourage spacing akin to what I have been using in the deployment of Infobox archetype; that is, a space between the beginning pipe and the parameter name, and lining up the equals signs between the parameters and their values (this is the same styling I would like to see applied to card pages, as well, though it's hard to say if it'll ever happen).
As far as sorting and spacing between parameters goes, I would argue that we group the parameters for a single errata together (maintaining the same parameter order between such groups), and separate the groups with a blank newline, instead of grouping the parameters by type as seems to be fairly widespread now. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 17:37, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
Keeping lore2, image2 etc. together as opposed to keeping lore0, lore1 and lore2 together sounds good to me. For cards with a lot of revisions, like "Exiled Force", it should be easier to keep track of things. -- Deltaneos (talk) 16:19, January 1, 2012 (UTC)
seems like both File:/Image: can be omitted because of the stuff in the template.
I'll bot the spacing and -File/-Image
Also, what's with ErrataTable2? Do we use the original, or 2?
All the ones I've checked at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:ErrataTable2 have something broken. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 01:33, January 14, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I magicked it up a while back so that the namespace could be left in or omitted in image names, but the ultimate goal is omitting it everywhere.
All ErrataTable variants (I don't actually know if there are any others besides ErrataTable2, since I haven't looked) should be replaced with just "ErrataTable" (or rather, since I'm thinking about it now, "Errata table" *goes to rename the template*); it is the general-purpose one, as opposed to variants, which are designed for more specific situations. If you come across a case where a conversion isn't possible or doesn't work satisfactorily, drop me a note and I'll see what needs changed to support it. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:43, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
Also, the ErrataTable2 breakage would be my fault - it was a copypaste fail when I updated it to just be a wrapper for Errata table. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:46, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
So, change all ErrataTable and ErrataTable2 to Errata table? -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 01:43, January 16, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, though in the case of '"ErrataTable" --> "Errata table"', it's probably not important enough to do unless you're making other changes to the page anyways. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 02:43, January 16, 2012 (UTC)
There's only about 20 that have ErrataTable and has the minor format fixes I'm adding, so might as well do them all.
Done the spacing, "Errata table" and removing File:/Image: from pages using the Errata table.
There is nothing linking to Template:ErrataTable and Template:ErrataTable2 now (except this page), so delete them? -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 04:47, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
Nah, just redirect "ErrataTable2" to "Errata table" (I'll do that in a minute) and leave both as redirects indefinitely; they're not hurting anything and it'll make things easier for anyone going around looking at old versions of random Card Errata pages. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 06:25, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
I've figured how to rearrange the parameters via bot, it wasn't as hard as I though it would be.
So, if the ordering isn't going to change (i.e. Template talk:Errata table) then I'll eventually change it all to what Card Errata:Ally of Justice Catastor has.
-Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 01:00, January 29, 2012 (UTC)
I'd say the most straightforward way to arrange the parameters is param0, param1, etc. (where "paramN" refers to the whole group of parameters "nameN", "loreN", "imageN", etc.), regardless of what order they're rendered by the template. As for that order, I wasn't saying on the template talk page that it wouldn't change, but rather that it's probably been unchanged for years; personally, I'm in favor of flipping it so that older errata are to the left. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 01:20, January 29, 2012 (UTC)
Actually, I mentioned that page because I wanted more comments on that topic, not to say it will not change.
So, flip the 0 and 1s on Card Errata:Ally of Justice Catastor so the ordering is logical (0 first)? The actual template order can be changed later if necessary/agreed upon. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 01:34, January 29, 2012 (UTC)

By the numbers in the parameter names, it's 5, since the parameters are numbered starting at 0. By the number of parameter groups, it's 6 (param0–param5). Should be completed.
Also, I can add the Errata table to old pages via the bot, but it won't be able to add any info that isn't already on the page. So they'll also be stubbed.
If anyone has time and wants to update them, they can find a list here.
Update it, most of the time by adding the image, set and SET-ID, then remove the stub.

This page has more than 5 Errata'd, the one from Starter Deck: Xyz Symphony does not appear (lore6). Also, I can't find an image of LON-EN104, can I leave it like what it is now? or just put an image from another set? --Dlamash (talkcontribs) 06:14, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
I've added support. I'm going to have to redesign the template, though; one row doesn't cut it when there's more than three versions (it triggers the table-cutoff "feature" on the Wikia skin). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 09:17, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
@Dlamash: It should either be the backing, or a red link to a non-existing image, not sure which one. It shouldn't be an image from another set with a different lore than the one specified.
@Dinoguy1000: (might as well mention it) While you're at it (whenever you start to redesign the template), reminder on what was discussed at Template talk:Errata table as well. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 13:25, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
Swords of Revealing Light has more that 6 Errata, I already found that =\, also I suggest to put another types/values like ATK/DEF,Type of Spell/Trap, type of monster, Attribute and Level/Rank, I think we will need it in the future. --Dlamash (talkcontribs) 16:04, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
(Reset indent) Dlamash: Okay, this is just getting ridiculous. =/ I don't think it'll be a terribly smart plan to add support for any more cards until the rewrite is done. Explicit support for other values might be an idea at that time, too; can you point out any cards at the moment that would benefit from such support?
Falzar: I'd forgotten about that particular discussion, but the ordering was one thing I intended to change anyways; it'll definitely happen. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:15, May 10, 2012 (UTC)

As far as I know, that's still happening; not every person that works on Errata pages necessarily know to (or how to) do so, though. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:39, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
Right. Tying back in to my original "snowflake" comment, some have no font differences, some have bold, some are highlighted in yellow or blue, some are in bold and highlighted, some are italicized, some are bold and italicized, and probably other combinations exist as well. I think the majority just use bold, though, and it seems the least troublesome. --Golden Key (talkcontribs) 18:49, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
Highlighting and colors has been discussed in the past, but IIRC a consensus on whether and how to use them was never reached. The preferred style was mix of bold and italics (and underline?), I thought, so that different edits between adjacent versions could easily be distinguished. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:06, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
@Dinoguy1000:Its just a suggestion, we have a few monster cards that have modification in its ATK/DEF/type valve, so its not important here, but we have alot of spell card that have modification in its type (Magic Card to Spell Card), from Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon 2002 Series to Legacy of Darkness, I see some user in this wikia put the editing in the name line as its the only method we have to show that type of change. --Dlamash (talkcontribs) 21:36, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I've seen the Magic --> Spell thing done for a few of the cards it happened to, but I don't think it is by any means a systematic thing. I'll add parameters for ATK/DEF/Type/card type after the rewrite, and we can go from there. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:08, May 11, 2012 (UTC)
It was suggested before that we change the errata table to use inline-blocks so that it'll add just enough entries to fit on the screen before moving the rest onto a new row. But I can't see any way of doing that and keeping the heights of each cell consistent, at least not without adding extra whitespace and/or scrollbars. The other alternative to stop the table going off the screen is to put three entries per row, which is about all that'll fit in the default skin. That'd be easier to code if we put the newest first, but still possible to code in the current setup. Should we go with any of these options? -- Deltaneos (talk) 00:58, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
I was actually thinking of going with the first method; the problem of how to line up the rows properly was what kept me from going ahead with it (after having that though, I briefly considered using a single table and limiting the number of cards per row, but hadn't really put much though into possible implementations or implications). I was also planning on going ahead and reversing the order the cards are displayed in regardless of what other changes got made. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:47, May 12, 2012 (UTC)

Dash on card images[edit]

Maybe i just missed it but I'm trying to understand why we now have to add a dash "-" between the name and the language? Wilimut TalkMail Paris, 22:02, January 13, 2012 (UTC)

Artworks pages[edit]

The widths for the images on Card Artworks pages have been generally 350px. However, it seems that it is too wide to show two images in a row in Wikia skin. Is there a number we can all agree on so that it's small enough to not look bad on Wikia skin, but big enough to clearly show the differences in the artwork? 250px seems to have been used in a few pages already. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 14:54, April 28, 2012 (UTC)

Since I was the one bring that up to him; so I am admitting to agree with Falzar's condition. Let's try with 250px. --iFredCat 14:58, April 28, 2012 (UTC)
250px was just something I've seen used a few times which is why I mentioned it. If it were a width that I'd suggest, it would be 275px because the Gallery pages use 175px, so it would be easy to remember, and it's bigger than 250px. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 15:26, April 28, 2012 (UTC)
295px is the biggest without it going over on Wikia skin.
So 250px, 275px, 295px.
i.e. 100 Less than current, 100 more than Gallery, Max size.
I wouldn't mind 275px or 295px. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 15:37, April 28, 2012 (UTC)
I would say 275px as well. It probably isn't a good idea to go for the exact maximum width we could get away with on the Wikia skin, since we don't have any guarantee that we won't randomly lose a few pixels of available width for some reason. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 17:17, April 28, 2012 (UTC)
Do the Gallery tags break if they're placed inside the Artwork/GalleryHeader templates? Which is why we have them separate. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 09:20, April 29, 2012 (UTC)
Kind of, it depends how they're enclosed. If you just have the whole <gallery/> tag in there, it should work fine, but if you try to add the tag itself to the template and just specify individual images on each page, it won't work. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:04, April 29, 2012 (UTC)
So we settle on 275.
Ok, how about the bullets? On tips, rulings, etc, we use the "* " before each point. Most artworks pages do not have this.
For the sake on consistency, I'll say we should have it on the artworks pages as well.
Also, is the default header used correct?
-Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 02:47, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
That's what it sounds like. =)
Can you show an example of what you're thinking for the bullets?
That's what I gather from the name. ;)
We should probably also note that Tag Force images should be used when available. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:44, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
Take (almost) any random page, say... Card Artworks:Meklord Emperor Skiel. It has In the anime, Meklord Emperor Skiel's artwork...' as a sentence in the middle of the page.
Now check Card Trivia:Meklord Emperor Skiel, Card Rulings:Meklord Emperor Skiel, Card Appearances:Meklord Emperor Skiel, Card Names:Meklord Emperor Skiel and Card Tips:Meklord Emperor Skiel. Each of these pages all have each point starting with "* ".
-Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 05:38, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
So basically, something like this? I'd be fine with that. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 06:08, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
For consistency with the rest of the pages, yes. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 11:12, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

Spacing between bulleted lists[edit]

Speaking of bullets, nearly all of those pages put two link breaks between each bullet point. When I started coming here, I always did this when there were long sentences/paragraphs on the bullets because it made the source on the edit page easier to read. But if you look at the HTML code, what this actually does is for example creates six lists with one item on each list rather than one list with six items, which is what was being aimed for. Sure to the human eye, it still looks like one list with six bullets, but it is technically six lists with one bullet each. Should we continue keeping them spaced for neatness or should we try to make them semantically correct? -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:42, May 15, 2012 (UTC)

Just repeating my points. This might make it a bit easier to understand. Here's the wikitext and the HTML they produce. You shouldn't need to understand HTML to get and idea of what's going on. The important thing is the first example produces one list of three and the second produces three lists of one.

To human eye, it really makes no difference. To a machine, the second method is interpreted differently than intended. One example of where this makes a difference is if a blind person is using a screen reader to read out the contents of a webpage to them. They'll be told that a new list is starting every time they get to a new bullet. -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:58, May 15, 2012 (UTC)
I think it could depend on the average length of the list items. If most of them fit comfortably in one to two lines when editing the page on the Wikia skin, we shouldn't need a blank newline between them. On the other hand, we could go the template route and thus get the best of both worlds, though I think we'd want to limit the template's usage to lists whose items are free-form (e.g. it would be totally inappropriate to use the template on a list of cards); this would also allow simpler application of classes and styles than full-blown HTML lists. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:02, May 15, 2012 (UTC)
A template seems a bit over the top. It might be worth sacrificing semantic meaning for simplicity, like how we indent our conversations with nested definition lists, which have a totally different semantic meaning. -- Deltaneos (talk) 19:25, May 15, 2012 (UTC)
Actually, the template solution I was thinking of would be pretty straightforward, something like:

At the end, it would only result in the addition of a bit more wikimarkup per list (basically just the opening and closing template markup), and would come with automatic support for multi-line list items. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:49, May 15, 2012 (UTC)
