A '''Spell Counter''' ({{ruby|魔|ま}}{{ruby|力|りょく}}カウンター ''Maryoku Kauntā'') is a type of counter used by a variety of cards.

Cards that use Spell Counters typically have the Spell Counter symbol somewhere in their artwork (such as on their clothing or accessories). However, some cards (such as "[[Old Vindictive Magician]]") feature Spell Counters in their artwork but do not have any effects related to them; other cards (such as "[[Dark Red Enchanter]]") do not feature Spell Counters in their artwork despite their effects relying on them.

Spell Counters are usually centered around [[Spellcaster]]-[[Type]] monsters. The [[Structure Deck]]s [[Structure Deck: Spellcaster's Judgment|Spellcaster's Judgment]] and [[Structure Deck: Lord of the Magician|Lord of the Magician]] contain a number of Spell Counter-related cards.

There is a "[[Spell Counter (card)|Spell Counter]]" card that officially represents Spell Counters.

== Effect ==
Spell Counters themselves do not have an effect, but many cards have effects that require Spell Counters.

Spell Counters can only be placed on cards that have an effect that allows Spell Counters to be placed on them. If that card's effect is negated, Spell Counters cannot be placed on it and any Spell Counters already on it are removed.<ref>{{cite book|author=Konami|title=Yu-Gi-Oh! == Usage ==
Spell Counters are commonly placed by cards on themselves when a [[Spell Card]] resolves (such as "[[Skilled Dark Magician]]"), although there are many other ways to place Spell Counters.

Many cards have effects that allow them to remove Spell Counters (usually from themselves) to activate their effects. However, cards use Spell Counters in a wide variety of ways, not just for removing as a cost.

Some cards (such as "[[Pitch-Black Power Stone]]") have effects that allow them to place Spell Counters on other cards, with some cards being able to place Spell Counters on other cards despite not being able to have them placed on themselves (such as "[[Magical Plant Mandragola]]").
