"Immortal Phoenix VS Herald" (神不死鳥ゴッドフェニックスVSバーサス宣告者デクレアラー Goddo Fenikkusu Bāsasu Dekurearā, lit. God Phoenix VS Declarer) is the eighth chapter of the Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG Structures manga. It was first published January 21, 2020, in the V Jump magazine.

Shoma Yusa continues his Duel Date with Light Tsukiko. But will Shoma be able to contend with Tsukiko's master plan?

Summary[edit]

Continuing their "Duel Date" already in progress, both Shoma Yusa and Tsukiko Kuroda have shown impressive use of their Decks, with Shoma already controlling his fearsome "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" and Tsukiko having Ritual Summoned not one, but two copies of "Herald of Perfection". Despite that, however, Shoma is the one feeling more nervous in this situation, as he knows that the "Herald" cards have powerful negation effects, and could stop any play he has before he gets started, as long as Tsukiko has the cards in her hand to use their effects. What's more, it's still Tsukiko's turn, so she's still capable of anything.

Observing the field, Tsukiko notes that she can't do anything about Shoma's "Gemini Ablation" now, since it's already been activated, so her next course of action is simple. Her aura grows dark and menacing again, and she declares the start of her Battle Phase. The first "Herald of Perfection" moves to attack his "Evocator Eveque", but Shoma uses the effect of his "Linkuriboh" to Tribute it and reduce its ATK to 0, turning the attack against Tsukiko. However, Tsukiko proves the value of her monsters, using its effect to send a Fairy monster from her hand to the Graveyard and negate Shoma's effect. Tsukiko's has a plan for this Duel, and nothing, not overbearing older siblings nor Shoma's own lines of defense, will stop it.

"Evocator Eveque" is destroyed, followed swiftly by "Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights" courtesy of the second "Herald of Perfection", and Shoma's LP fall to 7500. With this, the aura surrounding Tsukiko brightens again, and she declares the end of her turn with a smile. Jukyu Goriki, watching from the sidelines, shudders to think about the "Herald" Deck, as the last time he played against her, he had all his effects locked down and was completely trounced. It's like a chain and collar around the neck, made even more scary by how unsettling she becomes whenever she gets excited. Yami Kuroda, her older brother, notes that the Deck is much more frightening when it makes the first move. However, Shoma made the first move, and used it to get "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" on the field quickly. Tsukiko now has a difficult battle ahead, as few of her monsters can match Shoma's in ATK power. Silently, despite that he disapproves of this Duel at the fundamental level, he wishes his sister luck.

While the last card in her hand is a mystery, Shoma notes that, thanks to the effect of "Eva", Tsukiko does has two more Fairy monsters at least, and so has two more negations to use. He wonders if, having more cards in his hand to use, he should use all his resources to out-pace her. However, as if reading his mind, Tsukiko tilts her head at him and laughs softly. Shoma realizes that would be the wrong play, because if that unknown card is another "Eva", she can just replenish her hand with more Fairy monsters and match all his effects card-for-card. He instead uses "Gemini Ablation" to Summon "Evocator Chevalier" and Normal Summons "Infernoble Knight - Roland", determined to break through by combat.

The first attack goes well, and "Evocator Chevalier" destroys the first "Herald of Perfection", dropping Tsukiko's LP to 7900. Kuroda immediately roars out at Shoma for daring to harm his sister, and starts raging about dating, and marriage, and how he'll never give his blessing to their union, all while Jukyu physically holds him back and reminds him that the Solid Vision system doesn't inflict actual harm on anyone. Tsukiko harshly snaps at her brother to be quiet, and Shoma wonders if perhaps they can keep going now. Shoma continues the battle with "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" to destroy the second "Herald of Perfection". However, Tsukiko's aura darkens, and she declares that their date is going exactly according to plan.

Tsukiko activates the effect of "Honest" in her hand, sending it to the Graveyard to add the ATK of "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" to her own monster's, turning the attack back on Shoma. "Herald of Perfection" destroys "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" with its "Herald Ray". Tsukiko tells Shoma that their Duel Date has only just begun, and they're going to have even more fun. Shoma chides himself for getting careless and not thinking about "Honest"; however, now that the mystery card is out of the way, Tsukiko doesn't have any more surprises for him. He ends his turn by Tributing "Infernoble Knight - Roland" to revive his "Linkuriboh" in the Graveyard, then uses the effect of "Infernoble Knight - Roland" during his End Phase to add a card from his Deck to his hand. However, Tsukiko declares that this isn't part of her date plan, and uses another card in her hand to negate the effect, determined not to let Shoma get another "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" in play.

Tsukiko begins her turn, and draws the card "Terraforming". This, she decides, paired with the "Diviner of the Herald" already in her hand, is all the hand she needs. In a flash, her turn is done, and "Herald of Perfection" has been replaced by the "Herald of Ultimateness", which can not only negate activated card effects, but can also negate any Special Summon as well, for the cost of a Fairy monster in her hand. In addition, she also controls "Herald of Mirage Lights", who can also negate any the activation or activated effect of any Spell/Trap, rendering "Gemini Ablation" moot. Finally, her hand also contains "Time Maiden", who can be banished from the Graveyard later to instantly Summon any of the "Timelord" monsters she keeps in her Deck. These pieces, when put together, will slowly but surely push Shoma into the corner, and towards his defeat. After all, fun is a fleeting thing, so why not let things drag out for a while?

Shoma begins his turn. Tsukiko has two Fairy monsters in her hand, meaning she has two chances to negate his effects, and with her "Herald of Ultimateness" and its 3000 DEF, he can't battle his way through this time. Instead, he activates "Instant Fusion", paying 1000 LP to instantly Fusion Summon. Tsukiko guesses that he's intending on bringing out "Thousand-Eyes Restrict" to instantly dispose of her "Herald of Ultimateness". This isn't part of her date plan, and so she uses a Fairy in her hand to negate Shoma's card. Next, Shoma activates "Cross Over", allowing him to equip any of Tsukiko's monsters to one of his Warrior monsters. Again, this isn't part of her date plan, and so Tsukiko uses another Fairy in her hand to negate Shoma's card again. Shoma continues by using "Living Fossil" in his hand to revive "Evocator Eveque" in his Graveyard. Tsukiko, on a roll, declares that this isn't part of her date plan, and moves to use another Fairy in her hand to once again negate Shoma's card.

Only, her hand is now empty, which Tsukiko notices in shock. She had been so focused on her "inevitable" victory that she didn't notice that Shoma was wasting her resources, and now she doesn't have a way to negate Shoma's card or effect activations. Shoma takes this as his cue, and begins his turn in earnest. In no time at all, he's brought out a host of his best monsters, including his faithful "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried", and he's ready to move into the true endgame, and uses "Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights", "Linkuriboh", and "Ib the World Chalice Justiciar" to Link Summon "Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avramax", an extremely powerful monster.

However, that isn't the end of his play, as he activates "World Legacy Monstrosity" alongside his "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" to bring out "World Legacy Guardragon Mardark" and "Knightmare Incarnation Idlee", two more Level 9 monsters. This, he declares, is the true potential of his "Immortal Phoenix" Deck - an alliance that transcends themes. He then overlays his two additional Level 9 monsters to Xyz Summon "Infinitrack Earth Slicer". Its effect then uses its two Materials to completely clear Tsukiko's field of both her "Herald" monsters.

With the effect of "Herald of Mirage Lights", Tsukiko can then add two of her Ritual Monsters and/or Ritual Spells from her Graveyard back to her hand. She notes to herself that Shoma is a sweet boy, as he could have equipped "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" with the "Supermagic Sword of Raptinus" in his hand to give it the ability to negate her effect, but didn't. She chooses "Herald of Ultimateness" and "Oracle of the Herald", but thinks to herself that she would have liked to enjoy her Duel Date with Shoma just a little while longer.

Shoma attacks Tsukiko directly with all three of his monsters, dropping Tsukiko's LP to 0. Kuroda, despite that she lost, applauds Tsukiko's efforts, tears of pride flowing down his face (or perhaps tears of relief that he doesn't have to think about this "date" anymore). Shoma approaches Tsukiko, hand outstretched, and thanks her for inviting him out, as he had a really fun time today. Tsukiko is silent for a moment, then instead of shaking Shoma's hand, she suddenly pulls Shoma into a tight hug, and says that the next one should be a proper date. Jukyu scoffs that she's a very forward girl, while Kuroda can only cough up another packet of fake blood (or perhaps real blood this time) upon seeing this development.

Tsukiko walks away without another word, but Shoma turns and gladly accepts... and says that they should Duel again soon. Tsukiko is left speechless, but admits that he's a strong Duelist at the very least. Jukyu approches Shoma, grumbling that a Dueling genius like him can be so ignorant when it comes to romance. Shoma isn't really paying attention, and says that he's not sure there's a monster called "Ignore Ant" in the game. Jukyu is left to conclude that there's just nothing in Shoma's head besides Dueling.

Featured Duel: Shoma Yusa vs Light Tsukiko[edit]

Duel continues from the previous chapter.

Both players have 8000 LP. Shoma controls "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" (L9|3000/2200), "Evocator Eveque" (L4|1500/1000), "Linkuriboh" (300|↓), and "Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights" (1600|↙ ↘), the former two being in Attack Position, as well as a face-up "Gemini Ablation" in his Spell & Trap Zone. Light Tsukiko controls two copies of "Herald of Perfection" (L6|1800/2800), both in Attack Position, and her own "Linkuriboh". It is Tsukiko's turn.

Turn 2: Light Tsukiko
Tsukiko attacks "Evocator Eveque" with her first "Herald of Perfection". Shoma activates the first effect of his "Linkuriboh", Tributing it to reduce Tsukiko's attacking monster's ATK to 0 for the rest of the turn, but Tsukiko responds with the effect of "Herald of Perfection", discarding the Fairy "Cyber Petit Angel" in her hand to negate the activation of Shoma's effect. The attack continues, and "Evocator Eveque" is destroyed (Shoma: 8000 → 7700 LP). Tsukiko then attacks and destroys "Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights" with her second "Herald of Perfection" (Shoma: 7700 → 7500 LP).

Turn 3: Shoma Yusa
Shoma activates the first effect of "Gemini Ablation", discarding a card ("Instant Fusion") to Special Summon a Gemini monster from his hand or Deck, as an Effect Monster that has gained its effects. He Special Summons "Evocator Chevalier" (L4|1900/900) in Attack Position. He then Normal Summons his second "Infernoble Knight - Roland" (L1|500/500).

Shoma attacks "Linkuriboh" with "Infernoble Knight - Roland". Tsukiko activates the first effect of "Linkuriboh", Tributing it to reduce the ATK of "Infernoble Knight - Roland" to 0 for the rest of the turn ("Infernoble Knight - Roland": 500 → 0 ATK). Shoma attacks and destroys the first "Herald of Perfection" with "Evocator Chevalier" (Tsukiko: 8000 → 7900 LP). Finally, Shoma attacks the second "Herald of Perfection" with "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried"; however, Tsukiko activates the effect of "Honest" in her hand, discarding it to increase her battling monster's ATK by the ATK of Shoma's attacking monster for the rest of the turn ("Herald of Perfection": 1800 → 4800 ATK). The attack continues, and "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" is destroyed (Shoma: 7500 → 5700 LP).

During his Main Phase 2, Shoma activates the second effect of "Linkuriboh" in the Graveyard, Tributing the Level 1 "Infernoble Knight - Roland" to Special Summon it from the Graveyard. During his End Phase, since "Infernoble Knight - Roland" was sent from the field to his Graveyard this turn, Shoma activates its effect to add a FIRE Warrior monster or an Equip Spell from his Deck to his hand. Tsukiko, however, once again uses the effect of "Herald of Perfection", discarding "Guiding Light" to negate the activation of Shoma's effect.

Turn 4: Tsukiko
Note: Tsukiko's full turn is not depicted during the chapter itself; however, a page from the end of the chapter describes the full turn in detail.

Tsukiko activates "Terraforming" to add a Field Spell from her Deck to her hand. She chooses "Ritual Sanctuary", which she subsequently activates. She activates its second effect, shuffling any number of Spell Cards in her Graveyard into her Deck to Special Summon a Fairy monster from her Graveyard whose Level is equal to the number of cards she returned to the Deck. She chooses "Terraforming" and "Preparation of Rites", then Special Summons the Level 2 "Cyber Petit Angel" (L2|300/200) from her Graveyard. Since it was Summoned, she activates the effect of "Cyber Petit Angel" to add "Machine Angel Ritual" from her Deck to her hand. She then activates the first effect of "Ritual Sanctuary", discarding a Spell ("Machine Angel Ritual") to add any Ritual Monster or Ritual Spell from her Deck to her hand. She chooses "Oracle of the Herald".

Tsukiko Normal Summons her second "Diviner of the Herald" (L2|500/300). Since it was Normal or Special Summoned, she activates its effect, sending any Fairy monster from her Main or Extra Deck to the Graveyard to increase its Level by the sent monster's for the rest of the turn. She sends a second "Herald of the Arc Light" to the Graveyard, increasing her monster's Level by 4 ("Diviner of the Herald": Level 2 → 6). Since it was sent to the Graveyard, Tsukiko activates the effect of "Herald of the Arc Light" to add any Ritual Monster or Ritual Spell from her Deck to her hand. She chooses "Herald of Ultimateness".

Tsukiko activates the Ritual Spell "Oracle of the Herald", Tributing the Level 6 "Diviner of the Herald" and the Level 6 "Herald of Perfection" to Ritual Summon "Herald of Ultimateness" (L12|2000/3000) in Defense Position. Since it was Tributed, she activates the effect of "Diviner of the Herald" to Special Summon a Level 2 or lower Fairy monster from her hand or Deck. She Special Summons "Eva" (L1|500/200). She sets "Cyber Petit Angel" and "Eva" (2 monsters with the same Type and Attribute in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Herald of Mirage Lights" (600|↙ ↘) into the Extra Monster Zone. Since it was sent to the Graveyard, she activates the effect of "Eva" to banish up to two other Fairy monsters from her field and/or Graveyard, then add that same number of Level 2 or lower Fairy monsters from her Deck to her hand. She banishes "Senju of the Thousand Hands" and a "Herald of the Arc Light" from her Graveyard to add a third "Diviner of the Herald" and "Time Maiden" from her Deck to her hand.

Tsukiko attacks "Linkuriboh" with "Herald of Mirage Lights", but Shoma activates his monster's effect, Tributing it to reduce the ATK of "Herald of Mirage Lights" to 0 for the rest of the turn.

Turn 5: Shoma
Note: Shoma's full turn is not depicted during the chapter itself; however, a page from the end of the chapter describes the full turn in detail.

Shoma activates a second "Instant Fusion", paying 1000 LP (Shoma: 5700 → 4700 LP) to Fusion Summon a Level 5 or lower Fusion Monster from his Extra Deck, without Fusion Material. Tsukiko activates the effect of "Herald of Ultimateness", discarding "Time Maiden" to negate the activation of Shoma's Spell. Shoma continues by activating "Cross Over" to equip any monster Tsukiko controls to a Warrior monster he controls. Once again, however, Tsukiko activates the effect of "Herald of Ultimateness", discarding "Diviner of the Herald" to negate the activation of Shoma's Spell. Finally, Shoma activates "Living Fossil", allowing him to Special Summon "Evocator Eveque" back from his Graveyard and equip it with "Living Fossil", reducing its ATK/DEF by 1000 and negating its effects. Tsukiko attempts to counter with her monster's effect, but her hand is empty, and so she cannot pay the cost.

Shoma sets "Evocator Chevalier" and "Evocator Eveque" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon a second "Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights". Since it was Summoned by "Living Fossil", "Evocator Eveque" is banished after leaving the field. Since it was Link Summoned, Shoma activates his monster's effect to add a Warrior monster from his Deck to his hand, but he cannot Normal Summon, Special Summon, or activate the effects of monsters with that name this turn. He chooses "Sublimation Knight". He then activates the second effect of "Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights", sending any number of Equip Spells from his Deck to the Graveyard to Special Summon a Warrior monster from his Deck whose Level equals the number of sent cards. He sends "Supermagic Sword of Raptinus" and Special Summons a third "Infernoble Knight - Roland".

Since he controls a FIRE Warrior monster, Shoma Special Summons a second "Infernoble Knight - Renaud" from his hand by its own effect, who then becomes a Tuner monster by that effect. Since it was Special Summoned, Shoma activates its effect to add any of his FIRE Warrior monster or Equip Spell that is banished or in his Graveyard to his hand. He chooses "Supermagic Sword of Raptinus". Next, he activates the first effect of "Gemini Ablation", discarding a card ("Sublimation Knight") to Special Summon a Gemini monster from his Deck, as an Effect Monster that has gained its effects. He Special Summons a second "Evocator Eveque". Since it was Normal or Special Summoned, Shoma activates the effect of "Evocator Eveque" to Special Summon any FIRE Warrior or Gemini monster from his Graveyard. He Special Summons "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" in Attack Position.

Shoma tunes the Level 4 "Evocator Eveque" to the Level 1 "Infernoble Knight - Renaud" to Synchro Summon "Ib the World Chalice Justiciar" (L5|1800/2100) to a zone that "Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights" points to. Since it was Synchro Summoned, Shoma activates its effect to add any "World Legacy" card from his Deck to his hand. He chooses "World Legacy Monstrosity". He also sets "Infernoble Knight - Roland" (1 Level 1 monster) into the Link Arrows to Link Summon a second "Linkuriboh" to the other zone that "Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights" points to. He then sets "Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights", "Ib the World Chalice Justiciar", and "Linkuriboh" (2+ monsters Special Summoned from the Extra Deck) into the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avramax" (3000|←↙↘→) into the Extra Monster Zone.

Shoma activates "World Legacy Monstrosity", targeting his Level 9 "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried", allowing him to Special Summon two additional Level 9 monsters from his Deck, with different Types and Attributes than his "Immortal Phoenix Gearfried" and with different names than each other. He Special Summons WIND Dragon "World Legacy Guardragon Mardark" (L9|2600/3000) and DARK Fairy "Knightmare Incarnation Idlee" (L9|2100/2100). He then overlays his two Summoned monsters to Xyz Summon "Infinitrack Earth Slicer" (R9|3100/2100) in Attack Position to a zone that "Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avramax" points to. He activates his monster's effect, detaching its two Xyz Materials to target and destroy an equal number of cards on the field. He destroys Tsukiko's "Herald of Mirage Lights" and "Herald of Ultimateness". Since it was sent to her Graveyard by an opponent's card, Tsukiko activates the effect of "Herald of Mirage Lights" in her Graveyard, allowing her to add any two Ritual Monsters and/or Ritual Spells from her Graveyard back to her hand. She chooses "Herald of Ultimateness" and "Oracle of the Herald".

Shoma attacks Tsukiko directly with "Immortal Phoenix Gearfriend", "Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avramax", and "Infinitrack Earth Slicer" (Tsukiko: 7900 → 0 LP).
