"Lightning Strikes", known as "Bounty Hunter's Duty" in the Japanese version, is the eightieth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime. It first aired in Japan on December 5, 2018, and aired in Canada on June 7, 2020.

The Shepherd manages to deal with Lightning's tactics and gain the upper hand in the Duel. However, Lightning then Summons more monsters to attack The Shepherd's "Drones". At this point, no one can predict how the fierce battle between the two will go.

Summary[edit]

Within the "Armatos Colosseum", the Duel between The Shepherd and Lightning continues; The Shepherd controls the 2400 ATK "Battledrone General" and his "Snatch Drone" Continuous Trap Card, while Lightning controls two 1700 ATK "Armatos Legio Centurions". The Shepherd is the only one of the two who has taken damage, though he still has 3500 LP. Ghost Gal, Playmaker, Ai, Soulburner, Flame, Blue Maiden and Aqua all watch the Duel from the sidelines, while Varis and Spectre observe the Duel from atop a nearby building. Ai asks Playmaker who he should root for, given that both The Shepherd and Lightning are their enemies. Playmaker notes that neither of them would Duel without risking anything, and Ai agrees, as Playmaker adds that should The Shepherd win the Duel, Lightning will have to pay up. He suggests that The Shepherd might free Jin, and Ai decides that they want The Shepherd to win, cheering him on and telling him to pummel Lightning. (In the dub, Ai instead covertly draws Playmaker's attention to Varis and Spectre's presence, and Playmaker notes that in this case, Varis's presence won't make things worse and that he's not surprised Varis is here given the importance of the Duel. Ai decides that it would be best if both of them lose, as no-one would miss them, unaware of Ghost Gal's concern.) Spectre wonders if The Shepherd will win the Duel since he destroyed the Link Spell Card, and Varis admits that he isn't sure, given that the Light Ignis used an effect to prevent all of its monsters from being destroyed. Spectre realizes what Varis is implying, and Varis confirms that Lightning may have anticipated the destruction of his Link Spell, so the Duel may go in an unpredictable direction.

"Battledrone General" swoops in to attack.

The Shepherd declares his turn and draws, and he Summons "Drone Pawn", then activates the effect of "Battledrone General"; Special Summoning a "Drone" monster from his Graveyard to a zone that it points to. He resurrects "Scud Drone" and then activates its effect as it was Special Summoned by the effect of a "Drone" monster, drawing another card. He chants "Come out! The circuit that leads to victory!" and sets "Scud Drone" in the Link Arrow, Link Summoning the Link-1 "Battledrone Sergeant". Next he activates the effect of "Battledrone General", allowing "Drone Pawn" to attack Lightning directly. "Drone Pawn" opens fire, and its bullets skid across the ground on either side of Lightning and Jin, as Lightning falls to 3400 LP. In Café Nom, the watching Kolter gasps Jin's name, and he reflects that Lightning is controlling Jin like a puppet and apologizes for being unable to do anything. The Shepherd then activates the effect of "General", Tributing a "Drone" monster that attacked directly to inflict damage to Lightning equal to its ATK. "Drone Pawn" transforms into a green ball of energy and slams into Lighting and Jin, reducing Lightning to 2800 LP. The effect of "Sergeant" then activates, allowing it to attack directly as another "Drone" monster attacked Lightning directly. "Sergeant" blasts Lightning and Jin with a laser from its snout (attacking with "Battle Strike" in the dub), forcing Jin to stagger backwards as Lightning falls to 2000 LP. The Shepherd then activates the effect of "General" again, Tributing "Sergeant" to inflict damage equal to its ATK. "Sergeant" is also transformed into green energy and flung at Lightning, reducing him to 1200 LP. Lightning mutters that The Shepherd is quite persistent, and Shepherd replies that he's done with his opener (in the dub, Lightning notes that while each strike doesn't deal much damage, they add up quickly; Shepherd adds that it's not just quick, it's irreparable). He orders "General" to attack "Centurion". As "General" swoops in, Soulburner excitedly comments that Shepherd has already cornered Lightning. Flame notes that "General" has 2400 ATK, and "Centurion" 1700, so The Shepherd will have the overwhelming advantage if his attack succeeds (in the dub, Flame's notations are significantly longer, talking over his watching allies as he also notes that the Lightning he knows is prepared for any contingency and he can't imagine that this time is any different). Ghost Gal, Varis, and Spectre all watch silently as "General" releases two missiles.

"Centurion" blocks the attack of "General".

Lightning activates the effect of "Centurion" as an "Armatos Legio" monster was attacked, negating that attack once per turn (in the dub, Lightning agrees with Flame's assessment, commenting that he knows him too well). "Centurion" spins its spear, blocking the missiles and Shepherd is surprised that "Centurion" had that effect (in the dub, he is less surprised and comments that he'll make sure that Lightning won't be able to attack him). He activates a Continuous Spell Card, "Drone Unity"; if a "Drone" monster is targeted for an attack, its ATK will become the total ATK of all "Drone" monsters he controls. Lightning muses that he sees, but he notes that "General" is the only monster that The Shepherd controls. The Shepherd retorts that no-one asked for Lightning's opinion and he ends his turn, activating the effect of "Battledrone Warrant" during his End Phase as he controls no monsters in his Main Monster Zones, Special Summoning "Warrant" from the Graveyard. Playmaker notes that now Lightning will need a monster with 3600 ATK to be able to attack The Shepherd, and Ai muses that he sees; The Shepherd prepared for Lightning's counterattack (in the dub, he comments that he doesn't know how Lightning will get past that).

Lightning declares his turn and draws (in the dub, he responds to Ai, declaring "That's why you're you, and I'm me!"), then he activates the Continuous Spell Card "Armatos Lex", returning "Judgment Arrows" from his Graveyard to his Deck to add "Armatos Legio Gladius" from his Graveyard to his hand (in the dub, he reveals these in reverse order to emphasize the return of "Judgment Arrows"). Shepherd gasps "What?" in shock as Lightning orders the Link Spell Card "Judgment Arrows" to return to his Deck, and then retrieves "Gladius". Playmaker notes that Lightning was able to return "Judgment Arrows" to his Deck, and Ai states that Lightning is planning to use his Link Spell again, while Ghost Gal watches nervously. Varis notes that as he thought, the Light Ignis anticipated that its Link Spell would be destroyed. Lightning then activates the effect of the Field Spell Card "Armatos Colosseum", sending "Gladius" from his hand to the Graveyard to Special Summon "Armatos Legio Speculata" and "Armatos Legio Sica" from his Graveyard in Defense Position to the zones that "Centurion" points to. He chants "Appear! The circuit that guides the light!" and sets "Speculata" and the Link-2 "Centurion" in the Link Arrows, chanting "My light becomes eternal, my power becomes the truth! Shine on everything and create the path! Appear, Link-3 Armatos Legio Legatus Legionis!" ("From the dawn of the universe until its eventual end, there's only one constant - light! And now I shall coalesce this brilliance...I Link Summon! Link-3 Armatos Legio Legatus Legionis!" in the dub). Playmaker gasps that it's Lightning's Link-3 monster, and Ai declares that Lightning's ace monster has appeared (in the dub, Playmaker calls it Lightning's strongest monster, and Ai sarcastically asks if the speech gave it away). Lightning declares battle, and "Centurion" attacks "Battledrone General". Shepherd is shocked that Lightning is attacking "General" with a monster with lower ATK, but Lightning explains that the effect of "Sica" will allow the "Armatos Legio" linked to it to destroy the monster that it battles without damage calculation. "Sica's" dagger transitions to "Centurion's" hand, and it swings the golden blade and creates an arc of light that slices through "General" and destroys it instantly. The Shepherd gasps "What?" and Blue Maiden asks what happened. Soulburner observes that Lightning's monster gave the Link Monster an effect, and Aqua likens it to the Link Monster gaining the linked monster's weapon, granting it ever-changing effects. Blue Maiden admits that it's trouble, and Ghost Gal watches tight-lipped as Lightning orders "Legatus Legionis" to attack "Battledrone Warrant". "Legatus Legionis" fires a blast of light from its glowing sword that destroys "Warrant" and reduces The Shepherd to 2300 LP, and Lightning ends his turn (in the dub, he calls Shepherd his friend and comments that all of his monsters are gone, and soon he will be, and he tells Shepherd that it's his turn).

The Shepherd declares his turn and draws, and he Summons "Drone Recycler" from his hand and activates its effect, banishing a "Drone" Link Monster from his Graveyard to Special Summon a "Drone" monster from his hand whose Level is equal to the banished monster's Link Rating. He banishes the Link-2 "Warrant" to Special Summon the Level 2 "Drone Carrier" in Defense Position. He activates the effect of "Drone Carrier" as it was Special Summoned by the effect of a "Drone" monster, Special Summoning a "Drone" monster from his Graveyard, and he resurrects "General", furthermore activating its effect to Special Summon a "Drone" from his Graveyard to a zone that it points to. He revives "Drone Pawn", and then tunes the Level 2 "Drone Carrier" with the Level 4 "Drone Recycler". As the Summoning sequence begins, Lightning asks "Tuning?" The Shepherd chants "The elite sharpshooter with no equal. Fire your bullet at your prey! Synchro Summon. Level 6 Commandrone Double Sniper!" He then activates the effect of "General", allowing "Drone Pawn" to attack directly. Lightning comments that he sees and he asks Shepherd to allow him to prepare for the battle. He activates the effect of "Legatus Legionis", selecting a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster on his field and in his Graveyard, sending the one from his field to the Graveyard to Special Summon the other from his Graveyard. He sends "Sica" to the Graveyard and revives "Armatos Legio Scutum", explaining that while it is linked to an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster, Shepherd cannot target monsters other than that Link Monster for an attack; in other words, Shepherd is only able to attack "Centurion". As "Centurion's" spear disappears and it takes up "Scutum's" shield, Shepherd states that the effect doesn't apply when he is attacking directly and he orders "Drone Pawn" to attack.

"Armatos Lex" shields Lightning from The Shepherd's attacks.

But Lightning reveals that the effect of "Armatos Lex" will negate direct attacks while they both control monsters. Shepherd gasps is shock, and Playmaker is surprised that "Armatos Lex" had that effect. Ai yelps that Lightning's defense is solid, and Soulburner agrees. Flame notes that such a solid formation can't be easily broken. Since his attack was negated, The Shepherd instead activates the effect of "Double Sniper" and places a Drone Counter on it. As the port on its side lights up, Shepherd explains that "Double Sniper" can attack twice per turn and can attack directly when it has at least one Drone Counter on it, though its ATK will become 1000 when it does. He orders "Double Sniper" to attack directly, and as it releases four missiles Blue Maiden wonders why The Shepherd is attacking directly as "Armatos Lex" will negate it. Soulburner states that Shepherd has another goal, much to Blue Maiden's confusion (her confusion is cut form the dub). Lightning tells Shepherd to keep trying; it won't work. "Armatos Lex" projects an energy shield that intercepts the missiles, negating the attack. The Shepherd declares that the effect of "Double Sniper" will place another Drone Counter on it, and then he order it to attack "Centurion". Lightning activates the effect of "Centurion" to negate the attack, but The Shepherd snaps his fingers, declaring that he was waiting for this. Lightning gasps in shock as Shepherd activates the effect of "Double Sniper" since it has two Drone Counters, negating the activation and effect of "Centurion" and destroying it, then inflicting 1000 damage to Lightning. Aqua notes that the combination of negation, destruction, and damage is quite powerful and Blue Maiden realizes that this is what The Shepherd was aiming for. Ghost Gal watches nervously as Lightning claims that it won't happen (in the dub, he furiously snaps at them not to underestimate him), explaining that the effect of "Scutum" will prevent the "Armatos Legio" linked to it from being destroyed by battle or card effects. "Double Sniper" closes its glowing vents, and Shepherd gasps in shock, but brings himself under control and continues his attack on "Centurion". "Double Sniper" opens fire as "Centurion" takes up "Scutum's" shield to block the bullets, though Lightning still takes damage, falling to 900 LP. He admits that he didn't expect Shepherd to attack so well, and Shepherd retorts that he doesn't use weak attacks that an A.I. can predict. Lightning frowns, and he angrily asks if The Shepherd thinks that there is something that they can't predict (in the dub, Lightning comments that it was only 300 damage, and Shepherd asks Lightning if that's what his logic is telling him, because Shepherd's is telling him that Lightning is losing. Lightning snarls that's because Shepherd is a human, and Shepherd asks him to let this human change his mind). Shepherd asks if Lightning predicted this upcoming attack, and he orders "General" to attack "Centurion". "General" releases several missiles, reducing Lightning to 200 LP. Spectre notes Lightning's LP, and he comments that The Shepherd has completely cornered Lightning. With such low LP, if any further attack gets through the Duel will be over. Varis admits that The Shepherd has been impressive and Dueled beyond what he warned him about (in the dub, Varis is more pessimistic and comments that leaving his opponent with a chance, no matter how slim, is never wise).

"Fortressdrone Beehive" releases a swarm of "Drone Tokens".

Shepherd ends his attacks, but he vows that he won't let Lightning counterattack. He activates the effect of the Continuous Spell "Drone Unity", Tributing a "Drone" monster to draw a card. He Tributes "Drone Pawn" and draws the Quick-Play Spell Card "Drone Force Fusion", which he immediately activates, allowing him to Fusion Summon using "Drone" monsters, adding that the activation and effect of "Drone Force Fusion" cannot be negated. He fuses "Commandrone Double Sniper" and "Battledrone General", and Lightning is shocked that The Shepherd is using his ace monster as Fusion Material. Shepherd declares that he'll show Lightning that his Dueling is better than his, and he chants "My most powerful soldier and commander now become one to build an impregnable fortress! Fusion Summon! Fortressdrone Beehive!" ("I forge metal and steel together to engineer the command post of my aerial armada! I Fusion Summon Fortressdrone Beehive!" in the dub). It has zero ATK, but since it was Fusion Summoned using "Drone Force Fusion" it can't be destroyed by card effects, and when "Beehive" is Fusion Summoned it gains Drone Counters equal to the total Levels of its Fusion Materials. As the total was 6, it gains six Drone Counters. Shepherd then activates the effect of "Beehive", removing as many Drone Counters to Special Summon "Drone Tokens" for each. He removes five, Special Summoning five "Drone Tokens", and he explains that "Fortressdrone Beehive" gains 1000 ATK for every other "Drone" monster on the field, increasing it to 5000 ATK. Shepherd then Sets a card, ending his turn. Soulburner is shocked at the high ATK, and Flame muses that the five Tokens have zero ATK, but that when they're attacked the effect of "Drone Unity" will raise them to 5000 ATK, and he calls the strategy solid. Lightning muses that he sees, and he calls it a wonderful sight; it's fun for the climax of a Duel (in the dub, he admits that he doesn't have anything in his hand to stop him from losing). He declares his turn and draws.

"Armatos Legio Legatus Legionis" is chained by "Capture Drone".

He's drawn "Judgment Arrows", and he comments that he got a fun card too. He activates the Link Spell Card "Judgment Arrows", and Shepherd gasps in shock as Playmaker grits his teeth and Ai comments on Lightning's drawing skills. Varis observes that Lightning will now play "Judgment Arrows". But The Shepherd reveals that the effect of "Snatch Drone" will negate the effect of "Judgment Arrows", as it already destroyed it during the Duel. Lightning recalls Shepherd claiming that the effect of "Judgment Arrows" would be negated when he first destroyed it, and he narrows his eyes in intrigue. The Shepherd then activates another Continuous Trap Card, "Capture Drone", targeting "Legatus Legionis". Chains snake from the card and bind "Legatus Legionis", and Shepherd declares that its effects are negated and it can't be used as Link Material or Tributed. In addition, Lightning's Link Monsters can't attack. Lightning frowns in anger, and Ai cheers that Shepherd stopped the effects of "Judgment Arrows" and "Legatus Legionis". Lightning activates the effect of "Armatos Lex" again, Tributing "Scutum" to draw a card. He looks at his draw and he notes that it's not bad. Ai scratches his head and he notes Lightning's confidence and wonders if he will turn the Duel around. Lightning Summons "Armatos Legio Magica Alcum" and activates its effect as it was Summoned to a zone an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster points to, targeting "Judgment Arrows", then preventing "Armatos Legio" monsters he controls from being destroyed by card effects this turn and sending "Judgment Arrows" to the Graveyard. The Shepherd gasps "What?!" and Ghost Gal, Playmaker, Ai, Soulburner, Flame, Blue Maiden, and Aqua are all shocked by the move as well. Ai is shocked that Lightning would give up "Judgment Arrows" and "Legatus Legionis" shatters its chains and takes up the bow of "Magica Alcum", then withdraws a quiverful of arrows from a Graveyard portal.

"Armatos Legio Legatus Legionis" prepares to bisect "Fortressdrone Beehive".

Lightning declares that the effect of "Magica Alcum" will now destroy all cards in The Shepherd's Spell & Trap Zones and his Main Monster Zones, and Shepherd flinches back in horror and cries "What?!" Lightning notes that "Judgment Arrows" destroys all monsters that it points to when it is destroyed, but the effect of "Magica Alcum" protects "Legatus Legionis" from destruction (in the dub he adds that the same can't be said for Shepherd's cards). "Legatus Legionis" unleashes a rain of arrows, destroying all of the "Drone Tokens" and all three of Shepherd's Spell and Trap Cards. Blue Maiden gasps that the ATK of "Beehive" will become zero due to the destruction of the "Drones", and Aqua adds that Shepherd has no way to stop Lightning's monster since all of his Trap Cards have been destroyed. Ghost Gal thinks "Brother!" in horror and Shepherd lowers his gaze as he braces himself. Lightning's eyes seem to smile as he orders "Legatus Legionis" to attack "Fortressdrone Beehive" (in the dub, he also bids Shepherd goodbye, calling him his friend). "Legatus Legionis" gallops forwards, leaps off its horse, and brings its sword down, bisecting "Fortressdrone Beehive" and destroying it in a violent explosion, and The Shepherd screams as the winds of the blast whip past him and the light engulfs him. As Ghost Gal, Playmaker, Ai, Soulburner, Flame, Blue Maiden and Aqua shield themselves from the winds, Playmaker muses on "Judgment Arrows" and the "Armatos Legio" monster that powers it up, and Ai cries that Lightning's Deck is too powerful (in the dub they simply note that Lightning was in control of the Duel from the beginning). The winds die down as The Shepherd falls to his hands and knees, and Ghost Gal runs to him, crying his name and holding him in her arms as The Shepherd's LP is reduced to exactly zero.

The Shepherd is erased as he apologizes to Ghost Gal.

The Shepherd weakly admits that it seems he couldn't help Ghost Gal, much to her surprise. He explains that it's a brother's responsibility to protect his sister, and Ghost Gal gasps in shock, asking if this was why Shepherd acted on his own. The Shepherd apologizes to Emma, and then his Avatar disintegrates into yellow data as Ghost Gal screams "Brother!" (In the dub, this exchange is significantly lengthened. Shepherd describes himself as pathetic for his failure to defeat the Ignis, end the war and protect Ghost Gal, and Ghost Gal realizes this was why Shepherd acted on his own after he claims it's the older brother's responsibility to protect his younger sister. Shepherd laments that he wasted the time he had, time that money can't buy no matter how many bounties he hunts, and before his data is claimed, Ghost Gal calls his name, but Shepherd asks her not to call him that, as he'd rather she called him her big bro, revealing the truth to everyone present.) Playmaker, Ai, Soulburner, Flame, Blue Maiden and Aqua are all shocked to learn that The Shepherd was Ghost Gal's brother, while up above Varis notes that The Shepherd made no mistakes, but Lightning still defeated him. The Light Ignis is a fearsome foe. Lightning swiftly looks at his assembled foes, and he tells them that next time they're up and he comments that he hopes that they look forward to it. He and Jin vanish into a spark of light, and Playmaker angrily says Lightning's name (in the dub, Lightning bids them farewell, commenting "Til then", and Playmaker angrily says the same).

Featured Duel: The Shepherd vs. Lightning[edit]

Duel continues from the previous episode.

The Shepherd has 3500 LP and controls "Battledrone General" (2400/←↓→) in the Extra Monster Zone, as well as "Snatch Drone" in his Spell & Trap Zone. Lightning has 4000 LP and controls 2 copies of "Armatos Legio Centurion" (1700/←→) in his Main Monster Zones, as well as "Armatos Colosseum" in his Field Zone.

Turn 3: The Shepherd
Shepherd Normal Summons "Drone Pawn" (600/0). Shepherd activates the effect of "Battledrone General", targeting a "Drone" monster in his GY and Special Summoning it to his zone "General" points to. He targets and Special Summons "Scud Drone" (800/1100). As "Scud" was Special Summoned from the GY by the effect of a "Drone" monster, Shepherd activates its effect, drawing a card, also "Scud" is banished when it leaves the field. Shepherd sets "Scud" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Battledrone Sergeant" (800/↓) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "General" points to. Shepherd activates the effect of "General", targeting a Level 4 or lower "Drone" monster he controls with 1000 or less ATK and allowing it to attack directly this turn. He targets the Level 1 "Pawn". "Pawn" attacks Lightning directly (Lightning: 4000 → 3400 LP). As Shepherd's "Drone" monster inflicted battle damage to Lightning by a direct attack, Shepherd activates the effect of "General", Tributing that monster to inflict damage to Lightning equal to the ATK that monster had on the field. He Tributes "Pawn" (Lightning: 3400 → 2800 LP). As Shepherd's "Drone" monster inflicted battle damage to Lightning by a direct attack, Shepherd activates the effect of "Sergeant", allowing it to attack directly this turn, but if another monster attacks, "Sergeant" cannot declare an attack for the rest of this turn. "Sergeant" attacks Lightning directly (Lightning: 2800 → 2000 LP). As Shepherd's "Drone" monster inflicted battle damage to Lightning by a direct attack, Shepherd activates the effect of "General", Tributing that monster to inflict damage to Lightning equal to the ATK that monster had on the field. He Tributes "Sergeant" (Lightning: 2000 → 1200 LP). "General" attacks "Armatos Legio Centurion". As Lightning's "Armatos Legio" monster is targeted for an attack, he activates the effect of "Centurion", negating that attack. The attack of "General" is negated. Shepherd activates the Continuous Spell "Drone Unity". During the End Phase, as Shepherd controls no monsters in his Main Monster Zone, he activates the effect of "Battledrone Warrant" in his GY, Special Summoning it (1200/←↓).

Turn 4: Lightning
Lightning activates the Continuous Spell "Armatos Lex", and activates its effect, targeting a Spell and an "Armatos Legio" monster in his GY and shuffling that Spell into the Deck, then adding that "Armatos Legio" monster to his hand. He targets "Judgment Arrows" and "Armatos Legio Gladius", shuffles "Judgment Arrows" into the Deck, and adds "Gladius" to his hand. Lightning activates the effect of "Armatos Colosseum", sending a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster from his hand to the GY, then targeting an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster he controls to Special Summon as many "Armatos Legio" monsters as possible with different names from each other and the monster sent to the GY to activate this effect in Defense Position to his zones that Link Monster points to. He sends the Level 2 "Gladius" and targets "Centurion" to Special Summon "Armatos Legio Speculata" (0/1800) and "Armatos Legio Sica" (0/400) to the zones the middle-left and middle-right Link Arrows of "Centurion" point to respectively. Lightning sets "Speculata" and the Link-2 "Centurion" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Armatos Legio Legatus Legionis" (2400/←↓→) to the zone the middle-left Link Arrow of "Centurion" points to. "Centurion" attacks "General". At the start of the Damage Step, as Lightning's "Armatos Legio" Link Monster linked to "Sica" attacked Shepherd's monster, Lightning activates its effect, destroying Shepherd's monster. "General" is destroyed. "Legatus Legionis" attacks and destroys "Warrant" (Shepherd: 3500 → 2300 LP).

Turn 5: The Shepherd
Shepherd Normal Summons "Drone Recycler" (100/???). Shepherd activates the effect of "Recycler", banishing a "Drone" Link Monster from his GY to Special Summon a "Drone" monster from his hand whose Level equals the banished monster's Link Rating. He banishes the Link-2 "Warrant" to Special Summon the Level 2 "Drone Carrier" (800/1000). As "Carrier" was Special Summoned by the effect of a "Drone" monster, Shepherd activates its effect, targeting a "Drone" monster in his GY and Special Summoning it. He targets and Special Summons "General" (2400/←↓→). Shepherd activates the effect of "General", targeting a "Drone" monster in his GY and Special Summoning it to his zone "General" points to. He targets and Special Summons "Pawn" (600/0). Shepherd tunes the Level 2 Tuner "Carrier" with the Level 4 "Recycler" to Synchro Summon the Level 6 "Commandrone Double Sniper" (2000/2600). Shepherd activates the effect of "General", targeting a Level 4 or lower "Drone" monster he controls with 1000 or less ATK and allowing it to attack directly this turn. He targets the Level 1 "Pawn". Lightning activates the effect of "Legatus Legionis", targeting two Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monsters (one he controls and one in his GY) and sending that monster on the field to the GY, then Special Summoning that other monster from his GY. He targets the Level 1 "Sica" he controls and the Level 3 "Armatos Legio Scutum" in his GY, sending "Sica" to Special Summon "Scutum" (0/1800) to the zone the middle-right Link Arrow of "Centurion" points to. As an "Armatos Legio" monster is Special Summoned to Lightning's field while "Legatus Legionis" is on the field, Lightning activates its effect, this turn, "Legatus Legionis" is unaffected by Shepherd's card effects. While "Scutum" is linked to an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster Lightning controls, its effect only allows Shepherd's monsters to target that "Armatos Legio" Link Monster for attacks.

"Pawn" attacks Lightning directly. As a monster declared a direct attack, the effect of "Lex" activates, negating that attack. The attack of "Pawn" is negated. Each time a card or effect is activated that would negate a monster's attack or the activation of a Spell/Trap Card, the effect of "Double Sniper" places a Drone Counter on itself after that effect resolves ("Double Sniper": 0 → 1 Drone Counter). While one or more Drone Counters are on "Double Sniper", its effect allows it to make a second attack during each Battle Phase, also it can attack directly, but when it does so using this effect, the battle damage inflicted to Lightning becomes 1000. "Double Sniper" attacks Lightning directly. As a monster declared a direct attack, the effect of "Lex" activates, negating that attack. The attack of "Double Sniper" is negated ("Double Sniper": 1 → 2 Drone Counters). "Double Sniper" attacks "Centurion". As Lightning's "Armatos Legio" monster is targeted for an attack, he activates the effect of "Centurion", negating that attack. As Lightning activated a monster effect while there are two Drone Counters on "Double Sniper", Shepherd activates its effect, negating that effect, then destroying that card, then inflicting 1000 damage to Lightning. The first time "Armatos Legio" Link Monsters Lightning controls linked to "Scutum" would be destroyed by a card effect each turn, its effect prevents them from being destroyed. The effect of "Centurion" is negated, but it is not destroyed. The first time an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster Lightning controls linked to "Scutum" would be destroyed by battle each turn, its effect prevents it from being destroyed. The attack continues and "Centurion" is not destroyed (Lightning: 1200 → 900 LP). "General" attacks and destroys "Centurion" (Lightning: 900 → 200 LP).

Shepherd activates the effect of "Drone Unity", Tributing a "Drone" monster to draw 1 card. He Tributes "Pawn", then draws and subsequently activates the Quick-Play Spell "Drone Force Fusion", Fusion Summoning a Fusion Monster from his Extra Deck, using monsters he controls as Fusion Material, including a "Drone" monster, then it gains an effect. He fuses "Double Sniper" and "General" to Fusion Summon "Fortressdrone Beehive" (0/3000) to the Extra Monster Zone. The effect of "Beehive" gained from "Drone Force Fusion" prevents it from being destroyed by card effects. As "Beehive" is Fusion Summoned, its effect activates, placing Drone Counters on itself equal to the total Level of the "Drone" monsters used as its Fusion Material. The total Level equals six, so Shepherd places six Drone Counters on "Beehive" ("Beehive": 0 → 6 Drone Counters). Shepherd activates the effect of "Beehive", removing any number of Drone Counters from it to Special Summon an equal number of "Drone Tokens". He removes five Drone Counters ("Beehive": 6 → 1 Drone Counter) to Special Summon five "Drone Tokens" (0/0). The effect of "Beehive" increases its ATK by 1000 for each other "Drone" monster Shepherd controls. He controls five other "Drone" monsters ("Beehive": 0 → 5000 ATK). Shepherd Sets a card.

Turn 6: Lightning
Lightning draws and subsequently activates the Link Spell "Judgment Arrows" at the Spell & Trap Zone the bottom Link Arrow of "Legatus Legionis" points to. The effect of "Snatch Drone" negates the effects of cards with the same name as the card destroyed when "Snatch Drone" was activated while they are on the field. The effects of "Judgment Arrows" are negated. As Shepherd controls a "Drone" monster, he activates his face-down Continuous Trap "Capture Drone", targeting a Link Monster Lightning controls and negating the effects of that monster while it is on the field, also it cannot be Tributed or be used as Link Material. He targets "Legatus Legionis". The effect of "Capture Drone" prevents Lightning's Link Monsters from attacking. Lightning activates the effect of "Lex", Tributing an "Armatos Legio" monster to draw a card. He Tributes "Scutum", draws and subsequently Normal Summons "Armatos Legio Magica Alcum" (0/1600) to the zone the middle-left Link Arrow of "Legatus Legionis" points to. As "Magica Alcum" is Normal or Special Summoned to a zone Lightning's "Armatos Legio" Link Monster points to, he activates its effect, targeting a "Judgement Arrows" in his Spell & Trap Zone that Link Monster points to and preventing "Armatos Legio" monsters he controls from being destroyed by card effects this turn, also sending the targeted card to the GY, then destroying all face-up cards in Shepherd's Spell & Trap Zones and Main Monster Zones. He sends "Judgment Arrows" the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Legatus Legio" points to destroy five "Drone Tokens", "Drone Unity", "Snatch Drone", and "Capture Drone" ("Beehive": 5000 → 0 ATK). "Legatus Legionis" attacks and destroys "Beehive" (Shepherd: 2300 → 0 LP).
