Attack
This article is about the action performed in the battle phase. For the statistic, see ATK. For the battle position, see Attack Position.
Once a player enters the Battle Phase, an Attack may be Declared. To do so, the player must have at least one monster in Attack Position, with exceptions being "Total Defense Shogun" and "Elemental Hero Rampart Blaster", who may attack while in Defense Position.
Attacks have no Spell Speed and do not use a chain[1]. You cannot chain to an attack, but you can respond to it.
In the anime, when a player declares an attack, the monster literally attacks the attack target. In most cases the weaker monster will just stand still while the other one destroys it, sometimes it will try to fight back, but will obviously lose. Some attacks are also given names.
