Spell Cards (Japanese: 魔法カード Mahō Kādo), called Magic Card in the English TCG until the release of Magician's Force, are a type of cards that can be directly used from the hand to apply effects in the player's own turn. Their card frame is colored in green.

Interactions with effects
Spell Cards are played in the Spell & Trap Zones, with the exception of the Field Spell Card, which is played in the Field Zone.
+
* Some cards require 3 Tributes to be Normal Summoned. (e.g.: "The Wicked Avatar")
 +
* Some monsters can be Tribute Summoned with varying numbers of monsters. (e.g.: "Moisture Creature")
 +
* Some cards allow Spell or Trap Cards to be Tributed in place of monsters. (e.g.:  "Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter", "Ancient Gear Castle")
 +
* Some cards allow high-Level monsters to be Normal Summoned with fewer or no Tributes. (e.g.: "Fog King", "Mausoleum of the Emperor") However, if no cards are Tributed to perform the Normal Summon, the Summon is not considered a Tribute Summon, unless a card specifies otherwise (such as "Tribute Burial").

Spell Cards can be activated or set from the hand, and, excluding Quick-Play Spell Cards, can be activated in the same turn they are set. Spell Cards, except Quick-Play Spell Cards, can only be activated during their possessor's Main Phase. Quick-Play Spell Cards can be activated during either player's turn while set on the field.

"Kelbek", "Agido", and "Zolga" being Tributed for the Tribute Summon of "Obelisk the Tormentor" in the artwork of "Soul Crossing"

A Tribute Summon (Japanese: アドバンスしょうかん Adobansu Shōkan "Advance Summon") is a form of Normal Summoning a Level 5 or higher monster by Tributing another monster(s) the player controls. Level 5 and 6 monsters require one Tribute, while Level 7 and higher require two Tributes.

Tributing a monster for a Tribute Summon is part of a Summoning condition. Therefore, if the Tribute Summon is negated, the Tributed monster(s) will not return to the field.
