Card Appearances:Black-Winged Dragon

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D'sEdit

NotesEdit

Whenever you would take damage from a direct attack or card effect, this card can lose ATK equal to the damage you would have taken instead. Once per turn, you can increase this card's ATK any by amount up to the the amount lost by this effect. Afterwards, all face-up monster(s) your opponent controls loses ATK equal to that amount.* However, it becomes more like its OCG/TCG effect during episode 126 onward.
  • In the Japanese anime, while Summoning "Black-Winged Dragon", Crow chants “Darkened gales, become the wings that soar from resolved hope! Synchro Summon! Soar, "Blackfeather Dragon!"”
  • "Black-Winged Dragon's" first effect in the anime of placing counters is called "Damage Drain" in the Japanese anime. Its second effect of removing the counters is called "Black Burst" in the Japnese anime and "Black-Winged Burst" in the English dub.
  • Its attack is called "Noble Stream" in the Japanese anime and "Shadow Squall Blast" in the English dub.
  • In the anime, Crow claimed that Black-Winged Dragon's black feathers are the pain Bolton inflicted upon Pearson.
  • This card appears to represent Crow himself as its ability to nullify effect damage in exchange for it losing ATK reflects Crow's determination to protect his beloved ones. Its ability to remove Black Feather Counters and reduce the opponent's Life Points and the ATK of an opponent's monster reflects Crow's more daring personality when compared to Yusei's personality.

Anime appearancesEdit

  • In episode 94, this card is shown in a flashback Crow has when he explains to Yusei Fudo his backstory with Bolton, himself, and Robert Pearson. Pearson was shown using this card in his Tag Duel with Bolton against two unknown people. This card was Synchro Summoned through unknown means. It then attacked both opponents directly through an unknown effect, winning Pearson and Bolton the Duel.
    • This card's silhouette appears in Bolton's mind when he is shown frustrated over having to find this card in order to complete a loan deal.
    • This card appears in a flashback Crow has when Bolton tells him to give him this card if he wins their Duel tomorrow. Crow is surprised at this as he thought this card was lost in the fire that killed Pearson.
  • In episode 95, Crow Hogan uses this card during his Turbo Duel against Bolton. He found the card in a secret compartment of his Duel Runner (which he never knew about previously). Crow then Synchro Summons this card by tuning "Blackwing - Bora the Spear" with "Blackwing - Kochi the Daybreak". Bolton then activates "Synchro Rivalry" to prevent "Crimson Mefist" from being destroyed by battle this turn. Crow then activates "Speed Spell - Angel Baton" to draw two cards and send "Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite from his hand to the Graveyard. Crow then sets "Blackwing Anchor". This activates the effect of "Crimson Mefist", but this card's effect nullifies the damage and decreases its ATK by the damage nullified. Crow then activates the effect of "Zephyros the Elite" to return "Blackwing Anchor" to his hand and Special Summon "Zephyros the Elite" from the Graveyard as well as take 400 damage. This card's effect then nullifies the damage and decreases its ATK by the damage nullified. Crow then sets "Blackwing Anchor", which destroys "Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite" due to the latter's second effect. Crow then repeats the strategy loop over and over until this card's ATK becomes 0. Crow then activates the second effect of this card to increase this card's ATK by all the damage this card's effect nullified and decrease the ATK of "Crimson Mefist" by the exact same amount. This card then attacks "Crimson Mefist". "Crimson Mefist" is not destroyed due to the effect of "Synchro Rivalry", but Bolton still takes Battle Damage. Bolton's Life Points then dropped to 0, winning Crow the Duel. After the Duel, Bolton apologizes to Pearson for what he did and vowed to make things right.
    • Later at the cemetery, Crow goes to Pearson's grave (in the dub, all the gravestones are removed) and is shown holding this card. He vows to Pearson that he will continue his legacy (in the dub, Crow vows that he will find a way to get Pearson out of the Netherworld and once he does so, he will return this card to him).
  • In episode 105, Crow uses this card during his Turbo Duel against Hermann. He Synchro Summons this card by tuning "Blackwing - Sirocco the Dawn" with "Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind". Everyone wondered why Crow summoned this card in Defense Position, but Crow activates "Defenders Intersect" to switch both this card and "Hook the Hidden Knight" to Attack Position and negate both monsters' effects. This card then attacks and destroys "Hook the Hidden Knight" (whose ATK was 800 due to the effect of "Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind"), winning Crow the Duel. Hermann, unwilling to let "Hook the Hidden Knight" be removed from the field, activates "Revival Knight" to revive "Hook the Hidden Knight" in Defense Position, but Crow activates "Gravity Collapse" to negate the summon of "Hook the Hidden Knight" and destroy it by Tributing this card. Crow, at this point, could no longer take the strain from his injured arm, so he goes to the pits and passes the baton to Jack who proceeds in Dueling. Due to the rulings of the WRGP, Jack starts off with 4000 Life Points.
  • In episode 120, Crow uses this card during his Turbo Duel against Jinbei Tanigawa. He Synchro Summons this card by tuning "Blackwing Armor Master" with "Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall". Since "Oroshi the Squall" was used for a Synchro Summon, its effect activates, allowing Crow to switch "Hand-Holding Genie" to Attack Position. This card then attacks and destroys "Hand-Holding Genie"(whose ATK was 0 due to Crow placing a Wedge Counter on it via the effect of "Blackwing Armor Master" and removing it before summoning this card), winning Crow the Duel. Jinbei then passes the baton to Taro Yamashita who proceeds in Dueling Crow.
  • In episode 120, Crow uses this card during his Turbo Duel against Taro. When Taro activates the effect of "Speed World 2" to remove four Speed Counters and inflict 800 damage to Crow for each Speed Spell in his hand, Taro reveals "Speed Spell - Final Attack". Crow then activates this card's effect to negate the damage and decrease this card's ATK by the damage nullified. In the next episode, Leo warns Crow that Team Taiyo are planning to summon "Zushin the Sleeping Giant". This card attacks "Key Mace", but Taro activates "Two-Pronged Attack" to destroy "Zarigun" and "Eyearmor" and destroy this card. Crow then activates "Explosion Guard" to negate the effect of "Two-Pronged Attack" and inflict 500 damage to Taro. A replay occurs and Crow uses this card to attack "Key Mace", but Taro activates "Dragon Capture Jar" to switch this card to Defense Position. Later Taro activates "Speed Spell - Explosion" to destroy "Dragon Capture Jar" and switch this card to Attack Position. "Zushin the Sleeping Giant" then attacks this card. Due to the effect of "Zushin", its ATK becomes equal to this card's ATK plus 1000 until the end of the Damage Step. "Zushin" then destroys this card.
  • In episode 126, Crow uses this card during his Turbo Duel against Broder. He Synchro Summons this card by tuning "Blackwing - Brisote the Tailwind" with "Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind". Since "Brisote the Tailwind" was used as a Synchro Material Monster and sent to the Graveyard, its effect activates, increasing Crow's Life Points by 600. This card then attacks and destroys "Thor, Lord of the Aesir" (whose ATK was 1750 due to the effect of "Gale the Whirlwind"). On Crow's End Phase, the last effect of "Thor" revives itself and inflicts 800 damage to Crow, but Crow uses this card's effect to place a Black Feather Counter on it and avoid damage. This card then loses 700 ATK since it has a Black Feather Counter on it. Later "Loki, Lord of the Aesir" attacks this card, but Crow activates "Black Sonic" to banish all Attack Position monsters Broder controls, however Broder activates the effect of "Loki" to negate the effect of "Black Sonic" and destroy it. "Loki" then destroys this card. In the next episode, "Loki" attacks directly, but Crow activates "Black Wing" to banish a Blackwing from his Graveyard and negate the attack, however Broder activates the effect of "Loki" to negate "Black Wing" and destroy it. Crow then banishes "Blackwing - Calima the Haze" from his Graveyard in order to revive this card. A replay occurs and Broder uses "Loki" to attack this card, but Crow banishes the two "Black Wing" in his Graveyard in order to activate the second effect of "Black Wing", destroying "Loki" and this card and inflicting damage to Broder equal to the ATK of "Loki". Broder then activates "Dromi the Sacred Shackles" to inflict damage to Crow equal to the ATK difference between "Loki" and this card, ending the Duel in a Draw. Crow and Broder then pass the baton to Yusei and Halldor respectively who proceed in Dueling against each other.
  • In episode 133, Crow uses this card during his Turbo Duel against Jakob. He Synchro Summons this card by tuning "Blackwing - Ghibli the Searing Wind" with "Blackwing - Hillen the Tengu-wind" via "Urgent Tuning". Crow then passes the baton to Yusei Fudo who proceeds in Dueling Jakob.
    • In the first above-mentioned episode, this card appears in a flashback Crow has when he notes he could use the effect of "Hillen the Tengu-wind" to summon it and a Level 3 monster in his Graveyard when he takes at least 2000 Battle Damage. This would allow Crow to activate "Urgent Tuning" and Synchro Summon "Black-Winged Dragon" which could intercept the attack of "Meklord Emperor Granel". Crow notes that would be useless as "Granel Attack" will equip it to "Meklord Emperor Granel" once the latter destroys "Black-Winged Dragon". If that happens, Yusei will have to deal with "Meklord Emperor Granel" and two Synchro Monsters when Crow passes the baton to him.
    • In the first above-mentioned episode, this card appears in a flashback Crow has when he tells Jakob he won't let him provoke into summoning "Black-Winged Dragon" as he knows "Meklord Emperor Granel" will destroy it and Jakob will use the effect of "Granel Attack" to equip it to "Meklord Emperor Granel". If that happens Yusei will have to face two Synchro Monsters and "Meklord Emperor Granel".
    • In the first above-mentioned episode, this card appears in Crow's explanation when he tells Jakob that he and his friends will always fight alongside their Synchro Monsters.
  • In episode 134, Yusei uses this card during his Turbo Duel against Jakob. Later "Meklord Emperor Granel" attacks this card, but Yusei activates the effect of "Wave Wall" to negate the attack. Jakob then activates "Attack Cannon" to send "Granel Attack" to the Graveyard and destroy this card. Yusei then activates "Shadow Impulse" to Special Summon "Stardust Dragon" from his Extra Deck with its ATK 0 and its effects negated.
  • In episode 136, Yusei uses this card during his Turbo Duel against Aporia. When "Meklord Astro Mekanikle" attacks "Shooting Star Dragon" and Yusei activates "Scrap-Iron Scarecrow" to negate the attack, Aporia activates the effect "Mekanikle" got from "Wisel Attack 5" to negate the activation of "Scrap-Iron Scarecrow" and destroy it, Yusei activates "Revenge Twin Soul" to banish "Red Nova Dragon" and this card from his Graveyard and increase the DEF of "Shooting Star Dragon" by the combined Levels of the banished monsters times 100 until the End Phase. Since the combined Levels of the banished monsters was 20, "Shooting Star Dragon" gains 2000 DEF, causing the attack to fail. Later Yusei activates "Dimension Voyage" to Special Summon the banished "Red Nova Dragon" and this card at the cost of negating their effects and forbidding them from attacking. After Yusei activates "Trust Chain" to target "Shooting Star Dragon" for its effect and increase the ATK of "Shooting Star Dragon" by the ATK of all Synchro Monsters on the field, "Shooting Star Dragon" attacks "Mekanikle", but Aporia activates "Banishing Climb" to banish "Red Nova Dragon" and this card. Yusei then destroys "Trust Chain" in order to end the Battle Phase. At the end of the Battle Phase, the second effect of "Banishing Climb" returns "Red Nova Dragon" and this card to the field. On Aporia's next turn, he activates the effect of "Mekanikle" to equip itself with "Red Nova Dragon" and increase its ATK by the ATK of "Red Nova Dragon". Aporia then activates the effect of "Mekanikle" to send "Granel Top 5" from his hand to the Graveyard and grant "Mekanikle" the effects of "Granel Top 5" until the End Phase. Aporia then activates the "Granel Top 5"-granted effect of "Mekanikle" to equip itself with this card and increase its ATK by this card's ATK. After Aporia activates the last effect of "Mekanikle" to send "Red Nova Dragon" to the Graveyard and inflict its ATK as damage to Yusei and Yusei activates "Hardship" to reduce all effect damage he would take from the effect of "Mekanikle" to 0 this turn, Aporia activates the last effect of "Mekanikle" to send this card to the Graveyard and inflict its ATK as damage to Yusei, but Yusei takes no damage. Aporia then activates "Infinite Feast" to take "Red Nova Dragon" and this card from the Graveyard and equip them to "Mekanikle". After that is done, "Infinite Feast" inflicts 2400 damage to Yusei (600 damage for each time that a Synchro Monster got equipped onto a Meklord this turn) and increases Aporia's Life Points by 600. Yusei then activates the effect of "Hardship", sending it to the Graveyard in order to destroy "Shooting Star Dragon" as well as destroy all Equip Cards on the field. After Yusei activates "Ghoul Summoner" to revive this card and equip it with "Ghoul Summoner", Yusei activates the last effect of "Ghoul Summoner" twice to revive "Red Nova Dragon" and "Shooting Star Dragon" and inflict both monsters' ATK as damage to him. Yusei then uses this card's effect to nullify the damage and place two Black Feather Counters on this card, decreasing its ATK by 1400. In the next episode, Yusei activates this card's third effect to remove all Black Feather Counters from this card and decrease the ATK of "Mekanikle" by 700 for each Black Feather Counter removed as well as inflict damage to Aporia equal to the amount of ATK "Mekanikle" lost this way. With two Black Feather Counters removed, "Mekanikle" loses 1400 ATK and Aporia takes 1400 damage. Since this card has no more Black Feather Counters, its ATK returns to its original value. This card then attacks "Mekanikle", but Aporia banishes the "Granel Guard" in his Graveyard to prevent "Mekanikle" from being destroyed, however he still takes damage. This card remained on the field until the Duel was over.
    • In the first above-mentioned episode, this card appears in Luna and Bruno's explanation when they explain that "Red Nova Dragon" and this card were supposed to be banished via "Dimension Voyage" during the End Phase, but because "Banishing Climb" banished them and returned them to the field, that effect was voided completely for both monsters, meaning Aporia can use them as targets for the effect of "Meklord Astro Mekanikle".
  • In episode 145, this card appears in a flashback Bruno has when he notes that by being Yusei's friend and watching Yusei encouraging everyone to fight alongside him, he was able to feel the power of infinite possiblities.
  • In episode 147, Crow gives this card to Yusei for his upcoming Duel against Z-one.
  • In episode 148, Yusei uses this card during his Turbo Duel against Z-one. He Synchro Summons this card by tuning "Double Delta Warrior" with "Big Eater". Since "Double Delta Warrior" was used as a Synchro Material Monster, none of Yusei's monsters can attack this turn. In the next episode, "Zaphion, the Timelord" attacks this card, but Yusei activates "Scrap-Iron Scarecrow" to negate the attack. After "Kamion, the Timelord" (who prevents Z-one from taking damage from battles involving it and can't be destroyed) attacks "Red Dragon Archfiend", the third effect of "Kamion" activates, returning Yusei's monsters to his Deck (they go to the Extra Deck when this occurs since the returned monsters are Synchro Monsters) and inflicting 1500 damage to Yusei (500 damage for each monster returned this way). In the following episode, Yusei Special Summons this card, "Black Rose Dragon", "Red Dragon Archfiend", and "Ancient Fairy Dragon" from his Extra Deck via "Speed Spell - Synchro Panic". Yusei then activates the third effect of "Life Stream Dragon" and declares one for its effect in order to make all monsters on Yusei's side of the field except "Life Stream Dragon" Level 1 monsters. Yusei then tunes this card, "Black Rose Dragon", "Red Dragon Archfiend", and "Ancient Fairy Dragon" with "Life Stream Dragon" in order to Limit Over Accel Synchro Summon "Shooting Quasar Dragon". In the next episode, Yusei activates the fourth effect of "Converging Wishes" to return this card to his Extra Deck and force "Sephylon, the Ultimate Timelord" (whose ATK was 20,000 due to its own effect) to attack "Stardust Dragon" (whose ATK was 23,000 due to "Converging Wishes"), but Z-one activates the fourth effect of "Sephylon" to banish "Sandaion, the Timelord" from the field in order to prevent "Sephylon's" destruction and nullify the Battle Damage he would take. After Yusei and his friends escape the Divine Temple and get rid of it, Yusei returns this card to Crow.
