Q&A Rulings

  • Q: When my opponent activates the effect of "XX-Saber Gottoms", which is to discard 1 random card from the opponent's hand, can I chain the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing"?
A: Even in that scenario, you can activate the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing". The targeted "Dark World" monster is returned to the hand normally, and the effect of "XX-Saber Gottoms" will be to discard 1 random card from the opponent's (your) hand.[1]
  • Q: While "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is face-up on my field, my opponent activates the effect of their "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" when it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. If I activate "Dark World Brainwashing", but my opponent chains Mystical Space Typhoon and destroys it, what happens?
A: When resolving the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", if "Dark World Brainwashing" itself has been destroyed, the effect is not applied. (Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World remains on the field, and the effect of "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" banishes 1 card on the field normally.)[2]
  • Q: While "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is face-up on my field, my opponent activates the effect of their "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" when it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. If I activate "Dark World Brainwashing", but my opponent chains "Compulsory Evacuation Device" and returns "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" to my hand, how does the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing" resolve?
A: When resolving the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", if the targeted "Dark World" monster is no longer on the field, you cannot return it to the hand with the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", so the monster effect it was chained to remains unchanged. (The effect of "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" banishes 1 card on the field normally.)[3]
  • Q: While "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" is face-up on my field, my opponent activates the effect of their "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" when it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. If I activate "Dark World Brainwashing", but my opponent chains "Forbidden Lance" and makes "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" unaffected by Trap effects, how does the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing" resolve?
A: When resolving the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", if the targeted "Dark World" monster is unaffected by Trap effects, you cannot return it to the hand with the effect of "Dark World Brainwashing", so the monster effect it was chained to remains unchanged. ("Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World" remains on the field, and the effect of "Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter" banishes 1 card on the field normally.)[4]
A: The effect of "Dark World Brainwashing" is not treated as one that affects the monster activating its effect. In this scenario, the effect of "Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King" changes from "Destroy (the targeted card)" to "Discard 1 random card from your opponent's hand."[5]
