Card Rulings:Morphing Jar
OCG Rulings
- The monster effect of "Morphing Jar" is a Trigger Effect that always activates when it is flipped face-up. (It activates even during the Damage Step.)[1]
- The application of "Both players discard their entire hands" and the application of "draw 5 cards" are not treated as being done at the same time. (Discarding the player's hand is treated as being done at the same time as discarding the opponent's hand. Also, the player drawing 5 cards is treated as being done at the same time as the opponent drawing 5 cards.)[1]
- When resolving the effect of "Morphing Jar", even if either player (or both players) has no cards in their hand, it is still possible to draw 5 cards from the Deck.[1]
Q&A Rulings
- Q: Due to the effect of "Morphing Jar" etc., if the player and the opponent collect all five pieces of "Exodia the Forbidden One" ("Left Leg of the Forbidden One" etc.) in their own hands at the "same time", who wins the Duel?
- A: If the player and the opponent collect all five pieces of "Exodia the Forbidden One" ("Left Leg of the Forbidden One" etc.) in their own hands at the same time, the Duel is a "DRAW".[2]
- A: If adding Rock-Type monsters from your Deck to the hand by the effect of "Block Dragon", choose 1-3 Rock-Type monsters so that the total Levels of the chosen Rock-Type monsters is exactly 8. For example, you can apply the effect by adding only 1 monster: a Level 8 "Block Dragon"; or by adding a total of 3 monsters: 1 Level 2 "Morphing Jar", 1 Level 2 "Medusa Worm", and 1 Level 4 "Blockman".[3]
- Q: The monster effect "Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card, then target 1 monster your opponent controls; change its battle position, and if you do, it has its effects negated until the end of this turn" of "Digital Bug Scaradiator" was activated by targeting a face-up Defense Position "Morphing Jar" in the opponent's Monster Zone. If "Book of Moon" is activated in chain to that activation and "Morphing Jar" changes to face-down Defense Position, how does it resolve?
- A: In this scenario, even if the "Morphing Jar" targeted by the monster effect of "Digital Bug Scaradiator" is in face-down Defense Position when the effect resolves due to a "Book of Moon" activated in chain, the effect is still applied as normal. In this case, the currently face-down Defense Position "Morphing Jar" is changed to face-up Attack Position, and the effect "it has its effects negated until the end of this turn" is applied. (The monster effect "FLIP: Both players discard their entire hands, then draw 5 cards" of "Morphing Jar" is activated and makes a Chain Link, but that effect is negated and is not applied.)[4]
TCG Rulings
Upper Deck Entertainment Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been declared unofficial by Konami.[5] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. - If there are fewer than 5 cards in the Deck of either player when this card's Flip Effect is activated, that player will lose the Duel, since the text of this card says "draw".
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Desert Sunlight: If you have a face-up Flip Effect monster, you can activate "Desert Sunlight", and chain "Book of Moon", another "Desert Sunlight", and another "Book of Moon". When the chain resolves, you will flip the monster down, then up, then down, then back up. The Flip Effect activates twice, and they wait to create a new chain after the current one resolves. For example, if the Flip Effect monster is "Morphing Jar", its effect will activate twice in a chain, as Chain Link 1 and Chain Link 2, they resolve in reverse order, and both players will discard and draw 5 cards, then discard and draw 5 cards again.
- Gravekeeper's Watcher: You cannot activate "Gravekeeper's Watcher" during the Damage Step (such as against a "Morphing Jar" that is flipped by an attack).
- Gravekeeper's Watcher: When "Morphing Jar" is Flip Summoned, you may chain the effect of "Gravekeeper's Watcher", negating the Flip Effect of "Morphing Jar" and destroying it.
- Magical Thorn: The effect of "Magical Thorn" is applied when the opponent discards during the End Phase to make their hand size 6...discarding for card effects such as..."Morphing Jar"...
- Magical Thorn: The effect of "Magical Thorn" inflicts damage after an effect resolves. So if the effect of "Morphing Jar" is activated, the damage will be dealt after the new cards are drawn. This means if your opponent has 100 Life Points, and you have "Magical Thorn" active on the field but only one card left in your Deck, you will lose the Duel before the effect of "Magical Thorn" can deal damage to reduce your opponent's Life Points to 0.
- Night Assailant: "Night Assailant"'s effect activates when sent to the Graveyard by "Morphing Jar"...
- Null and Void: You cannot chain "Null and Void" to..."Morphing Jar"...
- Peten the Dark Clown: If "Peten the Dark Clown" is discarded because of "Morphing Jar"...the last thing that happened was that both players drew cards. So the effect of "Peten" does not activate.
- Protector of the Sanctuary: ...effects that are forcibly activated, like "Morphing Jar", can be activated...
- Protector of the Sanctuary: If "Protector of the Sanctuary" is on the field, then Flip Effects like "Morphing Jar" will still activate because they must activate when the monster is flipped (whether it was Flip Summoned, flipped by an attack, or flipped by "Book of Taiyou", etc.).
- Protector of the Sanctuary: If "Morphing Jar"'s effect activates, then both players discard their hands, but if you control "Protector of the Sanctuary", your opponent does not draw a new hand.
- Regenerating Mummy: "Regenerating Mummy"'s effect will activate when sent to the Graveyard by the effect of "Morphing Jar"...
