OCG Rulings

  • "'This card is unaffected by other monsters' effects'" is a Continuous Effect.[1]
  • "'Once per turn, if a Trap Card(s) is sent from your Spell & Trap Zone to the Graveyard (except during the Damage Step): You can excavate the top card of your Deck, and if it is a Trap Card, add it to your hand. Otherwise, send it to the Graveyard'" is a Trigger Effect. (This effect does not target. It cannot be activated during the Damage Step.)[1]
  • When resolving this card's Trigger Effect, first excavate the top card of your deck, and depending on the result, add it to your hand is it is a Trap Card, and if it is not, send it to the Graveyard.[1]
  • "'Once per turn, during either player's turn, if this card has a Trap Card as Xyz Material: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 card on the field; destroy it'" is a Quick Effect. It can be activated during the opponent's turn. (This effect targets 1 card on either yours or your opponent's field. Detaching 1 Xyz Material is a cost to activate this effect. This effect cannot be activated during the Damage Step.)[1]

Q&A Rulings

A: Even in this scenario, the effect of "Cairngorgon, Antiluminescent Knight" can be activated, and it resolves normally making another card on the field the target of the effect. (The effect of "Cairngorgon, Antiluminescent Knight" is not treated as affecting "Paleozoic Anomalocaris".)[2]
  • Q: I activated the effect of "Ancient Gear Gadget" that prevents my opponent from activating monster effects when a monster on my field attacks. If my monster attacks, can my opponent activate the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" that destroys a card on the field?
A: While the effect of "Ancient Gear Gadget" is applied, if "Monster" was declared, your opponent cannot activate the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" when a monster on your field attacks.[3]
A: If the effect of "Vendread Battlelord" was activated by declaring Monster, your opponent cannot activate any monster effects. In this scenario, although "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" is unaffected by other monsters’ effects, your opponent cannot activate its effect during this turn.[4]
  • Q: During my opponent’s previous turn, my opponent activated the effect of "Number 67: Paradicesmasher", so that I cannot activate monster effects or declare attacks. During my turn, if I Xyz Summon "Paleozoic Anomalocaris", can I activate its effects or attack with it?
A: The effect of "Number 67: Paradicesmasher" that prevents a player from activating monster effects or declaring attacks is not an effect that affects monsters, so even though "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" is unaffected by other monsters’ effects, you cannot activate its effects or attack with it.[5]
A: The effect of "Decode Talker" that increases its ATK is not an effect that is applied to the monsters that are linked to it. In this scenario, even if the monster linked to "Decode Talker" is one that is unaffected by monster effects, such as "Paleozoic Anomalocaris", "Decode Talker" still gains ATK normally.[6]
A: In this scenario, since the effect of your "True King of All Calamities" is applied while resolving the effect of "True King Bahrastos, the Fathomer", you can also choose monsters on your opponent’s side of the field to destroy. However, "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" is unaffected by other monsters’ effects, so it will not be destroyed if it is chosen. In this case, "True King Bahrastos, the Fathomer" will not be Special Summoned, and you cannot banish 2 Spell/Trap Cards from your opponent’s field/Graveyard.[7]
  • Q: I activate the effect of "Stargrail Warrior Ningirsu" that sends a card on each side of the field to the Graveyard. When it resolves, what happens if I choose a "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" on my field as one of the cards to send to the Graveyard?
A: In this scenario, since "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" is unaffected by monster effects, it is not sent to the Graveyard by the effect of "Stargrail Warrior Ningirsu". In this case, the opponent’s chosen card is sent to the Graveyard normally.[8]
  • Q: "F.A. Whip Crosser" and "F.A. Turbo Charger" are face-up in my opponent’s Monster Zone, and the effect of "F.A. Turbo Charger" that prevents me from targeting monsters with the effects of monsters that have a lower Level/Rank is applying. In this situation, if I activate the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" that destroys a card on the field, which of my opponent’s monsters can I target?
A: "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" has a Rank lower than the Level of "F.A. Turbo Charger", so the effect of "F.A. Turbo Charger" is applied when you activate its effect. ("Paleozoic Anomalocaris" is unaffected by monster effects, but that part of the effect of "F.A. Turbo Charger" is applied normally.) In this scenario, when you activate the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris", you can only target "F.A. Turbo Charger". (You cannot target "F.A. Whip Crosser".)[9]
A: In this scenario, the effect of "Envoy of Chaos" increases the ATK of "Black Luster Soldier" by 1500 until the end of this turn, so its ATK is 4500. In addition, the effect that makes the ATK of the opponent’s monsters that it battles become equal to their original ATK is an effect that is applied to the opponent’s monsters, and since "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" is unaffected by other monsters’ effects, it will have 3400 ATK during this battle while it is equipped with "Axe of Despair".[10]
  • Q: A Set Trap Card in my Spell & Trap Zone is destroyed by my opponent’s "Night Beam". In this case, can I activate the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" that excavates the top card of my Deck?
A: As in this scenario, even if a Trap Card is destroyed while Set in your Spell & Trap Zone, you can activate the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris".[11]
A: After being activated and Special Summoned as a monster, although "Embodiment of Apophis" is still treated as a Trap Card, the card itself is located in your Monster Zone. Even if "Embodiment of Apophis" is sent to the Graveyard while treated as a monster, it is not a Trap Card in your Spell & Trap Zone being sent to the Graveyard. Therefore, you cannot activate the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris".[12]
  • Q: While the effect of my opponent’s "Mistake" is applying, if a Trap Card in my Spell & Trap Zone is sent to the Graveyard, can I activate the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" that excavates the top card of my Deck?
A: While the effect of "Mistake" is applying, if a Trap Card in your Spell & Trap Zone is sent to the Graveyard, you cannot activate the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris".[13]
A: In this scenario, the effect of "Paleozoic Anomalocaris" will resolve while the effect of "Thunder King Rai-Oh" that prevents players from adding cards from the Deck to their hand is applying. In that case, you still excavate the top card of your Deck, and if that card is a Trap Card, it is sent to the Graveyard since it cannot be added to your hand. (As usual, if the card is not a Trap Card, it is also sent to the Graveyard.)[14]
