Q&A Rulings

  • Q: I activate the effect of "The Hidden City" when an opponent's monster declares an attack. If my opponent chains "Raigeki Break" so that my face-down Defense Position "Subterror" monster is destroyed, how does the effect of "The Hidden City" resolve?
A: When resolving the effect of "The Hidden City" that is activated when an opponent's monster declares an attack, if there are no face-down Defense Position "Subterror" monsters on your field, you cannot apply the part of the effect that changes one to face-up Attack or Defense Position, so you cannot negate the attack afterward. (In this case, since the number of monsters on your field changed, a replay occurs.)[1]
A: When resolving the effect of "The Hidden City" that is activated when an opponent's monster declares an attack, even if the attacking monster has been changed to face-down Defense Position, you still choose 1 face-down Defense Position "Subterror" monster on your field and change it to face-up Attack or Defense Position. Since your opponent's monster is in face-down Defense Position, you cannot apply the part of the effect that negates the attack.[2]
A: In this scenario, if the effect of "Forbidden Lance" has been applied so that your opponent's monster is unaffected by the effects of Spell Cards, you can still activate the effect of "The Hidden City" when that monster declares an attack. The effect will change your face-down Defense Position "Subterror" monster to face-up Attack or Defense Position as usual, but the attacking monster's attack is not negated. (The attack continues normally.)[3]
