- Some of the Archfiends are chess themed. This card is named after Checkmate.
- This card's Japanese name means Discovered Attack, which is a chess technique.
- Ironically, in a real chess game, Checkmate is when you have cornered your opponent's king. The card, on the other hand, has your king going on the offensive.
