- The name "Ruby Carbuncle" is a double pun, since Carbuncle is also a type of gemstone, as well as a mythical creature, alleged to be seen in Latin America. Legends say the Carbuncle has some sort of jewel on its head.
- "Ruby Carbuncle" may also be a multiple reference to the role-playing videogame series "Final Fantasy". Carbuncle is a Creature Summon that takes the form of a small cute animal that aids the player in battle with its special technique, "Ruby Light" (party-wide status: Reflect).
- "Crystal Beast Ruby Carbuncle" bears a striking resemblance to the Pokémon Espeon.
