  • Many believe that this card's name was originally "Dark Ruler Hades", but was turned into "Dark Ruler Ha Des" to make it less offensive. However, the Japanese title 「冥界の魔王 ハ・デス」 contains an interpunct 「・」 between "Ha" 「ハ」 and "Des" 「デス」, showing that it is actually two words. This was probably intended to be a pun, for the Japanese spelling of the word "death" is "des", like in "Desrook Archfiend" or "Des Lacooda".
  • Ha Des is a pun on the name, "Hades", the Greek God of Death and the Underworld (which is called "The Hades" as well) and son of the Titans Cronos and Rhea. After Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades defeated the Titans, Hades was given rule over the Underworld, the land of the dead. He forbid the dead to leave or the living to enter the Underworld with the exception of Hercules during his twelve labors. He was also extremely wealthy as all the riches were in the Underworld. He is also responsible for the capture of Demeter's daughter Persephone. Unlike the depiction in the card, he was neither good nor evil, but was a passive deity. Referred to as Pluto in Roman Mythology.
  • This card may have another counterpart in "Immortal Ruler". Basis for this speculation is in his robes, the fact that he "cannot be Special Summoned", and his name which refers to the fact that "Dark Ruler Ha Des" was revived.
