Card sleeves (Japanese: カードプロテクター kādo purotekutā "card protector"; also known as Duelist Card Protectors) are protective plastic covers used to prevent cards from getting bent or scratched.[1] Most card sleeves are made by third-party manufacturers, though Konami distributes a few styles of their own sleeves.[2][3][4][5]

If a player uses card sleeves, they must all be the same so their cards aren't marked.[1] A player may opt to use sleeves for their Extra Deck that are different to the ones of the Main Deck. In the case of the Side Deck, the sleeves must have the same backing as the ones in the Main Deck.

In the OCG, it is possible for a player's Deck to contain cards with different backings. In cases like this, it is mandatory for the player to use sleeves to prevent their cards from being marked.[6]

In video games, card sleeves serve no practical purpose and only serve as customizable features.

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's World Championship 2011: Over the NexusEdit

Players begin with the option to select no sleeves, or the four color variants of the 5D's logo sleeves (the top four in the image below), and could unlock more by playing online. Unlike the real card game, a player's Main Deck and Extra Deck always use the same sleeves. With the shut down of Nintendo Wi-fi Connection in 2014, the remaining sleeves may not be obtained without a cheating device .
