The Millennium Ring

The Millennium Ring (せんねんリング Sennen Ringu) is an item in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. This is the original depiction of the Millennium Ring.

The Millennium Key is one of the seven Millennium Items, which were created to use as weapons to help Egypt defend from foreign invaders.

History

Ancient Egypt

The Millennium Items were created using shadow alchemy and a sacrifice of human lives in the Kul Elna massacre, in order to protect the Egypt from foreign invaders. The first owner of the Millennium Ring was a High Priest.[1]

The Millennium Ring was later passed on to Mahado,[2] when he became a Priest. Mahado realized the Ring possessed an evil power, which he suspected it absorbed from the previous Priest who wore it.[3] Through that evil, he learned of the truth of the Millennium Items' creation.[4] Using his own heka, he used to suppressed the Ring's evil. Consequently, he could not use his heka for other things and relied on the same summoning magic that the other Priests used, significantly weakening his Magus of Illusion ka.[3] The next day, he notified the Pharaoh, Akhenamkhanen, of how the Items were created. Having sanctioned the Item's creation, this caused Akhenamkhanen to fall ill and die.[4]

The Millennium Ring senses Bakura, King of Thieves' evil.

Mahado would receive omens from the Millennium Ring, notifying him of sinners and their evil intents, which aided him in his duties of protecting the royal tombs. Following an influx of ka residing in people's souls, this power became more erratic and the rate of tomb defilement rose. It notified Mahado of a particularly great shadow power when Bakura, King of Thieves approached the Pharaoh's palace.[5]

Mahado set a trap for Bakura, where he sealed both of them in Akhenamkhanen's former tomb. Away from innocent bystanders, he stopped using his heka to suppress the dark powers of the Millennium Ring, allowing him to use it in a Diaha with Bakura.[5] Mahado allowed himself to be killed in the Diaha to cast a spell fusing his ba with his Magus of Illusion ka. With his sacrifice, he lost the Millennium Ring and seemed to kill Bakura.[6] However, Bakura survived and took the Ring, absorbing its evil power.[7]

The Millennium Ring granted Bakura's ka, Diabound, the power of camouflage. This made it easier for Bakura to sneak into the Shrine of Wedju, where he attacked Akhenaden[8] and used the Millennium Ring's power to infuse part of his soul into Akhenaden's Millennium Eye to make him his pawn.[9]

Possessing the Millennium Ring enabled Bakura to summon ka from the Shrine of Wedju. He used it in a Diaha with the Atem and the High Priests to summon Illushu as a decoy ka.[10] During the Diaha, the Ring pointed towards the Millennium Pendant, notifying Bakura that Atem was coming after him.[11]

Bakura brought the Millennium Ring and Pendant to the Shrine of the Underworld and placed them in the tablet. He noticed the needles on the Ring stirring, indicating other Millennium Item holders were approaching.[12] Possessing two Millennium Items gave Bakura the ability to sustain two ka at once, allowing him to summon both Diabound and Bone Snapper in the ensuing Diaha.[13]

Bakura was defeated.[14] However Akhenaden acquired all the Millennium Items and placed them in a tablet, as part of a dark pact to gain power. He became the High Priest of Shadows and waged war with Atem.[15]

The Millennium Ring, similar to some of the other Items, came to house a soul from the past and functioned as a portable tomb.[16] The soul of Zorc Necrophades was sealed in the Millennium Ring, which later took the form of Dark Bakura.[17][11]

Trials

The Millennium Items were looked after by generations of Tomb Guardians with the Ring, Key, Scales, and Eye eventually falling into the care of Shadi. The Tomb Guardians saw it as their mission to find suitable hosts for the Items. They believed that if they did that they would find the other Millennium Items, as the Items are drawn to each other and when that time came the Items would be united in the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories.[18]

The Millennium Ring rejecting a thief as its host

A thief tried to steal the Millennium Ring at Kul Elna, but was caught by the Tomb Guardians. He tried to hand back the Ring, but the Tomb Guardians insisted on taking him away. Maximillion J. Pegasus witnessed the ordeal and fearing for the thief's safety, offered to pay for the Ring if they would let him go. Shadi replied that the value of the Ring was irrelevant, albeit immeasurable. The thief was brought to the Shrine of the Underworld and Shadi told the man that they did not intend to condemn him for the theft. Rather, he they were to test if they was a chosen one; if the Millennium Ring would accept him as its bearer. The Ring was placed around his neck. However, it rejected him as a host, dug its prongs into his skin and caused fire to burst out of his eyes and mouth, killing him.[18]

Ryo Bakura's father tries on the Millennium Ring.

Ryo Bakura's father grew a fascination for the Millennium Ring and spent most of his life searching for it. His investigations led him to believe it was located in the Valley of the Kings, so he and his son, Ryo traveled to Egypt. Ryo, fearing his father would be in danger, secretly followed him during the a trip to find the Millennium Ring. While Shadi was lecturing the Prana children in the shrine, Bakura's father entered and offered to pay money for the Ring. Shadi explained that the Ring was not for sale, rather it would test people to see if they were worthy hosts. Bakura's father put the Ring on for the test and momentarily felt good, before the Ring ultimately rejected him and flung him across the chamber.[19]

Dark Bakura emerges from the Millennium Ring.

Ryo emerged to help his father, who instead urged him to get the Ring. Ryo picked up the Ring, which then accepted him as its owner and its contained evil manifested as Dark Bakura. Dark Bakura took control of Ryo and fused the Millennium Ring into his body, causing it to disappear under his skin. Dark Bakura then used the Ring's power to kill Shadi. Ryo suppressed memories of the incident[19] and came to believe his father purchased the Millennium Ring from an antique shop in Egypt.[20]

Monster World

Dark Bakura sticks the Millennium Ring's prongs into Ryo Bakura's flesh.

The Millennium Ring allowed Dark Bakura to take control of Ryo Bakura's body, without him knowing, and turn the games he played with his friends into Shadow Games. As Dark Bakura defeated Bakura's friends, he used the Ring to inflict the "Mind Doll" Penalty Game, trapping their souls in Monster World miniatures[16] or brainwashed dice,[21] leaving their human bodies in comas. Unaware of what caused that to happen to his friends, Bakura kept changing schools and tried to distance himself from new people.[16]

Ryo Bakura transferred to Domino High School and learned that Yugi Mutou possessed the Millennium Puzzle. He was about to tell him that he had a similar item, but stopped after feeling a pain in his chest. He turned down Yugi's offer to play Monster World after school, fearing what happened to his other friends.[16]

Dark Bakura uses the Millennium Ring to trap Mr. Karita's soul in a miniature.

The Millennium Ring would sometimes point one of its needles in the direction of the Millennium Puzzle.[22] The two Millennium Items coming close together caused them to resonate, granting Dark Bakura the ability to communicate with Ryo Bakura. He introduced himself and pierced the prongs of the Ring into Ryo's chest to prevent him from removing it. Dark Bakura claimed to pay rent by granting Ryo wishes, including his desire to be able to play games with his friends forever. That night he "paid rent" by using the Ring to turn Mr. Karita, who had bullied Ryo earlier, into a Monster World miniature.[16]

The next day, Yugi and his friends arrived at Bakura's apartment to play Monster World. Dark Bakura posed as Ryo[16] and made their Monster World campaign into a Shadow Game to try and steal the Millennium Puzzle.[23] Using the Ring he sealed Ryo's friends' souls into their game pieces, until only Dark Yugi was left to roll the dice for Ryo's friends.[24]

During the campaign, Dark Bakura made use of the brainwashed dice he had created using the Millennium Ring to control the outcome of his dice rolls.[21] But Ryo interfered with his plays, swapping the brainwashed dice for regular dice and making the brainwashed dice land on undesired numbers.[25] Dark Bakura later used the Ring to seal a part of his own soul into doppelganger dice. However he unwittingly sealed Ryo's soul in the dice too, enabling Ryo to make the dice self-destruct and void their roll. Dark Yugi won the game and restored all souls sealed in gaming pieces to their original bodies.[26]

Duelist Kingdom

The Millennium Ring at some point stopped pointing towards the Puzzle.[22]

Ryo discovers the Millennium Ring is pointing towards Pegasus Castle.

Ryo Bakura stopped wearing the Ring to prevent Dark Bakura from controlling him. Despite concern from his friends, he still kept it near him, considering it to be harmless as long as he did not put it on. He remained fascinated by the Millennium Items, wishing to know their purpose origin. He suspected they might get answers from Maximillion J. Pegasus when Yugi participated in the Duelist Kingdom tournament.[20]

During the first night of the tournament, Ryo checked on the Millennium Ring and discovered it was pointing in the direction of Pegasus Castle and suspected it was pointing towards the Millennium Eye.[22] The next day, Ryo made use of this information when he and his friends were lost underground, as they were able to use the Ring to know which direction they were traveling.[27]

Dark Bakura encourages Ryo to put the Ring back on.

In order for Ryo and his friends to escape the underground, Dark Yugi and Katsuya Jonouchi needed to defeat the Meikyû Brothers and answer their riddle about which door led to the exit. As Ryo searched the area for a possible third door, Dark Bakura spoke to him through the Millennium Ring. He urged Ryo to put the Ring on, so that he could help identify the correct door, insisting it would be easy for a thief like him. Ryo refused, but eventually gave into the fear of everyone getting trapped and put it on. Dark Bakura coped the Meikyû Brothers planned on saying the correct door was whichever one Dark Yugi did not choose and helped Dark Yugi fool them into misreading Dark Yugi's guess before they revealed the correct door. He returned control to Ryo before they left.[28]

Dungeon Dice Monsters

Outside the Black Clown, the Millennium Ring alerted Dark Bakura that something had happened to the Millennium Puzzle when Mr. Clown took it from Yugi and dismantled it.[29] Since the Millennium Ring and Puzzle contained memories destined to be reunited and Yugi was the only host chosen by the Puzzle in the past 3000 years, Dark Bakura needed Yugi to remain its wielder, so he sought to help him.[30]

Dark Bakura observed the Dungeon Dice Monsters game that Yugi and Ryuji Otogi were playing and offered some encouragement to Yugi.[31] Yugi won the game and Dark Bakura secretly used the Millennium Ring's "Parasite Mind" ability to seal a portion of his soul in a piece of the dismantled Millennium Puzzle, before handing it to Yugi.[32]

Battle City

During the Battle City Duel Monsters tournament, the Millennium Ring detected the nearby presence of the Millennium Rod and pointed one of its prongs in its direction, leading Dark Bakura to its holder Marik Ishtar[33]

Marik had Rishid pretend to be him for the tournament finals. Ryo Bakura was brainwashed by Marik, whom Dark Bakura was conspiring with, and he aided in the deception by showing his friends that the Millennium Ring was pointing to Rishid as he carried the Millennium Rod.[34]

Anzu takes the Millennium Ring, while brainwashed.

Dark Bakura lost to Dark Yugi in the quarterfinals and Ryo's existing injury caused him to fall unconscious after the final attack. The Millennium Ring fell from his body and was picked up by Anzu Mazaki, who figured it had allowed Dark Bakura to take over Ryo's body again. Under Marik's brainwashing, she offered to look after the Ring herself, saying she would keep it away from Ryo.[35]

Dark Marik with the Millennium Ring

The brainwashed Anzu returned the Millennium Ring to Ryo, after Marik lost control of his own body to Dark Marik. This allowed Dark Bakura to emerge again and speak with the portion of Marik that had been implanted in Ryo's mind. He agreed to prevent Dark Marik from killing Rishid in exchange for seeing the Seal of Memories and taking the Millennium Rod. The two confronted Dark Marik, who used the Rod's power to pin Dark Bakura to a wall. However Dark Bakura used the Ring's power to free himself and immobolize Dark Marik's arm. As Millennium Item holders they agreed to settle things in a Shadow Game,[36] by playing Duel Monsters. Dark Marik emerged victorious, causing Ryo's body to disappear, leaving just the Ring, which Dark Marik claimed.[37]

During the tournament final, Dark Marik taunted Dark Yugi by revealing what he did to Bakura, while showing him that he now had the Millennium Ring.[38] Marik regained control of his body at the climax of the Duel and surrendered dispelling Dark Marik.[39] Afterwards, he gave both the Ring and Rod to Dark Yugi.[40]

Dark Marik's defeat allowed Ryo to regain consciousness. He asked Dark Yugi if he knew the Millennium Ring's whereabouts, but Dark Yugi elected to lie, not wanting Ryo to get possessed again.[40] However Ryo later happened upon the Ring in Yugi's room and put it back on.[41]

Pharaoh's Memories

Dark Bakura stopped a thief who had stolen the God cards. He returned them to Yugi, who thanked him but noted he was wearing the Millennium Ring. Dark Bakura insisted that the Ring belonged to him, despite the inconvenience Ryo's theft may have caused Yugi. Despite that, he explained that he intended to hand the Ring over to Yugi when the time came for him to use the seven Millennium Items.[42] Yugi questioned Dark Bakura's willingness to help him and he explained that he is soul that was sealed in the Millennium Ring for 3000 years and like Dark Yugi, he wished to go to the afterlife.[17]

Ryo was denied opportunity to travel to the World of Memories after Bobasa detected evil in his heart with the Millennium Scales. This caused Bobasa to suspect Bakura was the holder of the Millennium Ring.[43]

Mana becomes the holder of the Millennium Ring

The portion of Dark Bakura's soul in the Millennium Ring set up the Shadow RPG against Dark Yugi, which controled the events of the World of Memories. The game featured a deck of cards, including ones for each Millennium Item, whose possession shifted between players as ownership of the Items changed in the World of Memories.[44]

The portion of Dark Bakura's soul that he had sealed in the Millennium Puzzle via the Millennium Ring's Parasite Mind[45] was able to enter when Yugi and his friends found the door in Dark Yugi's soul room.[46] He brought the Ring with him and it existed separately from the World of Memories own Millennium Ring.[7] He used the Millennium Ring's power to knock back Yugi and Jonouchi, when they tried to get past him to help the Pharaoh.[47] and used it to face Jonouchi in a Shadow Game of Duel Monsters.[11]

Dark Bakura was defeated in the Shadow RPG and Dark Yugi took back the Millennium Ring. Within the World of Memories timeline, Mana became the holder of the Millennium Ring, after Zorc's defeat.[48]

Rite of the Duel

Atem placed the Millennium Ring along with the other six Millennium Items into the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories in the Shrine of the Underworld. This caused him to split into a separate body from Yugi, so that the two may face each other for the Rite of the Duel.[49] By experiencing defeat, Atem was deemed ready to pass on. His passing through the door to the afterlife, caused the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories to break and fall into the depths of the earth, taking the Millennium Items with it.[50]

Dark Side of Dimensions

Aigami corrupted by the Millennium Ring

After Seto Kaiba had excavated the pieces of the Millennium Puzzle from the Shrine of the Underworld, Mani noticed the needles of the Millennium Ring in the rubble and exhumed it. Taken by the Ring's evil, Mani urged Aigami to kill Ryo Bakura in revenge for what Dark Bakura did to Shadi. Mani proceeded to attack Ryo, but managed to resist the Ring's evil. Bakura was then transported to one dimension, while Mani and Aigami went to another, where Mani's body disappeared. Aigami considered picking up the Ring before being distracted.[19]

Aigami visited the alternative dimension another time after losing a Duel to Yugi Mutou. This time the Ring engulfed him in shadows turning him into a corrupted form. The Corrupted Aigami returned to the standard dimension and faced Yugi and Kaiba in a Duel. On his defeat, the Millennium Ring was destroyed and Aigami was returned to normal.[19]
