Extra Monster Zones are the 2 Zones in the center of the field where monsters Summoned from the Extra Deck are placed on the field.
If a Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum, or Link Monster is Special Summoned from the Extra Deck, it must be placed in the Extra Monster Zone or a Linked Zone. (If any of these monsters would be Special Summoned from another location, it is placed in a Main Monster Zone.)
While both Extra Monster Zones are unoccupied, neither is treated as being part of the field of any player. When a player Special Summons a monster to an Extra Monster Zone, that zone is then treated as part of their field while it is occupied, while the other zone is automatically treated as part of their opponent's field. A player can only occupy 1 Extra Monster Zone at a time.
Taking control of cards in Extra Monster Zone will cause that monster to be placed in the Main Monster Zone, and if the control would ever be regained, it will return to th Main Monster Zone, and not the Extra Monster Zone.
