Forum:Anime card counterparts

There were discussions about this at Talk:Scratch Wheel and my talk page that really didn't go anywhere. The jist of it is this. There are some cards that have slightly different Japanese names in the anime and had their names and effects changed when they went to the OCG. The effects are usually similiar and the artwork is usually nigh identical as well.

At this point, I think we should keep all the articles. To me, what a card is is dictated by its Japanese name. So if these were different, they are separate cards. Thoughts?

Opinion[edit]

I'd noticed the discussion about "Scratch Wheel" just faded out with no conclusion. That happens too often on the site... Anyway, I'd say keep the separate pages. Having the same name but different effect is one thing, but having different names and effects makes them different cards, even if the image is the same. --Golden Key (talkcontribs) 15:36, April 4, 2012 (UTC)

My stance on the issue is well-known, and I still think exceptions should be considered for early versions of cards. These days, if a card is used in the anime and then released into the OCG with a different effect, we don't consider them different cards. Back then, things weren't as organized as they are now, clearly, so we ended up with a few inconsistencies between card names here and there, but that doesn't mean they were separate cards. Cross Soul and Cross Sacrifice are clearly the same card, except that one is an early version that was slightly changed in name and effect for the OCG release. These Wiki policies seem to ignore logic and reasoning in favour of "They are different because their names are different. End of story, regardless of any extenuating circumstances." I'm against it.--YamiWheeler (talkcontribs) 15:50, April 4, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and just wanted to add that I believe that De-Spell and Cursebreaker are different cards. De-Spell was first released into the OCG in Vol.2 on the 27th of March, 1999, while the episode in which Cursebreaker was used aired on the 26th of June, 2001. They emphasised the difference between the cards with different names, effects, artworks and even types. They even used it in video games which included several anime-only cards, indicating that it was intended to be a different card.--YamiWheeler (talkcontribs) 16:05, April 4, 2012 (UTC)
I'm not saying that extenuating circumstances can't change things. I just think that in this case, they don't. For an example, take "Stealthroid". It has the same Japanese name in both the anime and manga. However, we categorize the manga card as a completely different card, since it has completely different art, stats and effects. I split the articles myself. "Cursebreaker" example struck. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 16:11, April 4, 2012 (UTC)
Okay, that's fair enough, but these are early versions of cards that don't have as drastic a difference. They're just unrefined. I suppose it might be a bit awkward to make it Wikia policy to only make separate articles if Factors A, B, C and D are true, but I think it'd be silly to list these particular cards separately too. For now, that's my stance and I'll leave it at that.--YamiWheeler (talkcontribs) 16:26, April 4, 2012 (UTC)
For a bit more context, there is at least one example of a pair of cards clearly being the same card, but having different passcodes, thus we treat them as separate cards: Dark Magician and Dark Magician (Arkana). There's also Polymerization versus Polymerization (Fusion) for a similar case where the cards have been released separately in the TCG. And then there are the 1999 Asian Tournament Promo versions of some Ritual Monsters: Black Luster Soldier (DM), Zera the Mant (DM), Super War-Lion (DM), and Fiend's Mirror (DM). These aren't, of course, directly comparable to what we're discussing, but they do show that this isn't the only case where we separately document cards that could be argued to simply be unusual versions of other cards. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 05:32, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
