BiographyEdit

Koyo's hospitalizationEdit

While Midori's brother, Koyo was in hospital, Midori caught him having snuck out of his room one day and found him sitting with Jaden Yuki. Over the next few weeks she observed Jaden and Koyo bonding over Dueling. She grew concerned when Koyo announced his intentions to take part in a tournament before he had been dismissed from the hospital. She tried to talk him out of it, until he said that he wanted Jaden to see how he looks as a Duelist, rather than just a sick man.[2]

After the tournament semifinals, Midori was present when Koyo signed an autograph for Chazz Princeton and mistook Koyo for talking to himself when he spoke with the Winged Kuriboh Duel spirit. As she was about to return to the waiting room, Koyo suddenly collapsed and she helped the emergency services get him back to the hospital.[3]

Midori stayed by Koyo's bedside until he woke up. When Jaden arrived, she said that it was her fault he collapsed, but Jaden blamed himself because he had wanted to see Koyo in the tournament. Midori insisted it was not his fault and later told Koyo what Jaden had said. She suggested that Koyo show Jaden that he is full of life to relieve him of any blame. She was nervous when the doctors could not find any abnormalities when they tested Koyo, but were curious about a tiny black shadow in his brain stem, present in an MRI scan, which had disappeared when they reexamined his brain.[4]

While Jaden and Koyo discussed Koyo's tournament Duel, Midori joined in and said that Koyo's costume was not cool; the red made it too loud and she was embarrassed by it. When Jaden left the hospital, after he and Koyo made plans for a Duel, Koyo told Midori that he would retire as a pro Duelist after this Duel. When Jaden arrived the next day, Midori gave him a v2 Duel Disk as a present. Jaden was concerned that it may have been expensive, but she said that a child should not worry about that. She then spectated on the rooftop Duel between Jaden and Koyo.[5]

During the Duel, Midori commented on one of Jaden's plays spurting an argument between her and Koyo as to whether she was helping or encouraging Jaden. Jaden started laughing and explained that not having any siblings of his own, it was interesting hearing them bicker. Midori replied that she could Jaden's older sister, in that case.[6] After the Duel, she witnessed Koyo's retirement, as he entrusted his Deck to Jaden. She asked afterwards if he was okay with stepping down and if he had any regrets. He replied that he had plenty, one of which was that he was never a match for Midori, even as a pro. He had previously hoped that she would be his last opponent, but he was happy with it being Jaden. Midori left the room to put fresh water in a vase of flowers, but when she returned Koyo had fallen into a coma.[7]

When Jaden next came to visit Koyo, Midori told him that the doctors did not know when or if Koyo would wake up. While Jaden tried speaking with Koyo, Midori got a shock as she noticed an apparition of Winged Kuriboh floating over the bed. Before she had much time to think about what it was, Jaden ran out of the room crying and Winged Kuriboh disappeared. She ran after Jaden to the rooftop, where she found him sitting on the tiles, laughing because he could now see the Winged Kuriboh spirit, which Koyo had told him about before.[8]

Since first seeing Winged Kuriboh, Midori often pondered on the existence of spirits that house in cards. She wondered if she and Jaden, being capable of seeing Winged Kuriboh would have to pay a price, like Koyo did. But also believed that Winged Kuriboh was somehow keeping Koyo alive.[9]

Duel AcademyEdit

Hibiki became a teacher at Duel Academy and first-year instructor for Slifer Red.

Midori graded a midterm exam. Although Syrus Truesdale scored 91, the highest in the class, he did not put his name on his paper. Following standard procedure, she gave him a score of 0 in the first draft result sheet and corrected it before submitting the final results. She forgot to lock her office, before leaving on business for the day. This enabled Vellian Crowler to enter her vacant office when he was looking for the midterm results. He saw the early draft and believed Syrus had scored a 0. Without consulting Midori, he threatened to expel Syrus if he could not defeat Jaden in a Duel. Midori returned just after Syrus lost the Duel and explained that he had really scored a 91 and would not be expelled. She also said that she would be reporting Crowler's misconduct and would that Jaden, who really failed, would need to see her arrange a make up test.[10][11]

Hibiki had Jaden and Syrus bring the study cards from the reference room to her office. She thanked them on arrival and apologized for grief caused by midterm mix up. Syrus insisted that the experience was good. She assured Jaden he would not have to worry about losing Koya's former Deck again and thanked him for holding it in high regard. After they left, she thought about how Jaden had gotten strong and could be capable of beating Koyo.[12]

During a practical skill session, Hibiki watched Jaden and thought it must be fun. She observed Winged Kuriboh floating next to him and thought about the existence of card spirits again. Seeing Winged Kuriboh growing up with Jaden, she became more sure that it was responsible for prolonging Koyo's life.[13]

As the American exchange students, Reggie MacKenzie and David Rabb were welcomed to Duel Academy, Hibiki took note of their matching earrings. She wondered how much skill they had, assuming it to be substantial since they were studying abroad.[14]

Her skill is shown first hand when she faced Reggie in order to force Reggie to reveal the cause of Koyo's coma. During the Duel Reggie was very nearly defeated without landing a single attack on Midori in only a small number of turns. Only by using blackmail was Reggie able to escape a crushing loss and pull off a win, despite having quite easily dispatched Alexis Rhodes previously and having beaten Midori's former World Champion brother years before (though while controlled by Tragoedia). After Midori is defeated, Reggie reveals that she was lying and doesn't know what happened to her brother despite having been the one that did it. Midori is dismayed at the discovery and quietly asks for her brother's forgiveness, as she falls to her knees. She collapses in Jaden's arms, and is later revived when Jaden defeats Reggie.

DeckEdit

Midori plays a "Darklord" Deck, which focuses on the Summoning of high-Level monsters with devastating effects via Trap Cards. A confident Duelist, she signifies the activation of such cards by snapping her fingers.
