The Fall and Die Explosive Tag Match was a Tag-Team Duel in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. It is based on the Explosive Tag Team Match of Death from the manga.

The Duel consisted of the team of Yami Yugi and Seto Kaiba facing the Rare Hunters, Lumis and Umbra, in the Battle City tournament. It took place on the top of a 130-meter tall skyscraper, in a setup designed to causing losing players to fall to their deaths.

Events[edit]

Prior[edit]

Marik Ishtar, making his plans to destroy the pharaoh and claim the Egyptian Gods, has sent his Rare Hunters out to apprehend Joey Wheeler, Téa Gardner, and Mokuba Kaiba. Yugi and Kaiba are approached by a Rare Hunter, telling them to join him at the top of a nearby skyscraper if they ever wish to see their loved ones again. Yugi and Kaiba agree to join forces for the time being.

On the top of the building, the Rare Hunter and his partner are waiting for the duo. They introduce themselves as Lumis and Umbra, and they must be defeated in a Tag-Team Duel in order for the duo to rescue the prisoners. But if they should fail, and their LP drop to 0, the glass pane of the skylight the four Duelists find themselves on will be shattered, and they will fall, never to be seen again.

Duel[edit]

In this Tag-Team Duel, all players start with 4000 LP, take separate turns, and have their own field. The Duel will not end until both players of a team have been defeated.

Turn 1: Lumis
Lumis Sets two cards.

Turn 2: Yugi
Yugi Summons "Beta The Magnet Warrior" (1600/1700) in Defense Position.

Turn 3: Umbra
Umbra Summons "Shining Abyss" (1600/1800) in Defense Position. His partner Lumis activates his Set "Mask of Brutality" and equips it to "Shining Abyss", increasing its ATK by 1000 while reducing its DEF by 1000 ("Shining Abyss": 1600 → 2600 ATK / 1800 → 800 DEF), but during each of Lumis' Standby Phases, he must pay 1000 LP and destroy it if he cannot. However, Umbra activates "Masked Doll", negating the cost effect of "Mask of Brutality".

Turn 4: Kaiba
Kaiba Sets two cards, then Summons "Vorse Raider" (1900/1200) in Attack Position.

Turn 5: Lumis
Lumis activates "Mask of the Accursed", equipping it to Yugi's "Beta The Magnet Warrior". The equipped monster cannot attack, and if it is the only monster Yugi controls, Lumis and Umbra can attack Yugi directly. In addition, Yugi will take 500 damage during each of his Standby Phases while he controls it.

Turn 6: Yugi
During his Standby Phase, Yugi takes 500 damage by the effect of "Mask of the Accursed" (Yugi: 4000 → 3500 LP). Yugi attempts to Tribute "Beta The Magnet Warrior" to Tribute Summon "Beast of Gilfer"; however, Umbra activates his Set "Mask of Restrict". While on the field, players cannot Tribute their monsters for a Tribute Summon. Yugi instead Sets a card and Summons "Kuriboh" (300/200) in Defense Position.

Turn 7: Umbra
Umbra Sets a card, then changes "Shining Abyss" to Attack Position. Umbra attacks Kaiba's "Vorse Raider" with "Shining Abyss", but Kaiba responds by activating his Set "Ring of Destruction" by targeting "Shining Abyss". "Shining Abyss" is destroyed, and both players will take damage equal to its ATK. However, Lumis activates his Set "Curse Transfer" to change the target of Kaiba's Trap to "Vorse Raider" instead.

Kaiba then activates his Set "Ring of Defense" to prevent himself from taking damage from his own Trap, but Umbra activates his Set "Spell Transfer" to negate the effect of "Ring of Defense", and activate its effect as the effect of "Spell Transfer". The chain resolves, and "Vorse Raider" is destroyed, while Kaiba alone takes damage equal to its ATK (Kaiba: 4000 → 2100 LP).

A replay occurs, and Umbra attacks Kaiba directly with "Shining Abyss". However, Yugi responds with his Set "Multiply", creating a barrier of "Kuriboh" clones out of his single "Kuriboh", protecting Kaiba's LP. After activation, "Multiply" stays on the field, keeping the barrier in place.

Turn 8: Kaiba
Kaiba Sets a card and Summons "Battle Ox" (1700/1000) in Defense Position.

Turn 9: Lumis
Lumis activates "Mask of Dispel", targeting "Multiply". The effects of the targeted card are negated, and as long as it remains on the field, Yugi will take 500 damage during each Standby Phase. Since its effects are negated, the barrier created by "Multiply" is reduced to a single "Kuriboh". Lumis Summons "Grand Tiki Elder" (1500/800) in Attack Position, and uses it to attack and destroy "Kuriboh"

Turn 10: Yugi
During his Standby Phase, Yugi takes 1000 damage from the combined effects of "Mask of the Accursed" and "Mask of Dispel" (Yugi: 3500 → 2500 LP). Yugi Sets a card.

Turn 11: Umbra
Umbra activates "Curse of the Masked Beast", Tributing "Shining Abyss" and "Grand Tiki Elder" to Ritual Summon "The Masked Beast" (3200/1800) in Attack Position. Umbra attacks Yugi directly (ignoring "Beta The Magnet Warrior" with the effect of "Mask of the Accursed") with "The Masked Beast". However, Kaiba protects his teammate by using "Battle Ox" as a shield. "The Masked Beast" destroyed "Battle Ox".

Yugi activates his Set "Card Destruction", forcing all players to discard their hand and draw the same number of cards they discarded. The effect of "Beast of Gilfer" activates as it was discarded, and Yugi equips it onto "The Masked Beast", decreasing its ATK by 500 ("The Masked Beast": 3200 → 2700 ATK). None of the other players notice what has occurred.

Turn 12: Kaiba
Kaiba activates "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", discarded with "Card Destruction", from his Graveyard in Attack Position. Kaiba attacks "The Masked Beast" with "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", and Yugi reveals what "Beast of Gilfer" has done. "The Masked Beast" is destroyed (Umbra: 4000 → 3700 LP).

Turn 13: Lumis
Lumis Sets a monster, then Sets two cards.

Turn 14: Yugi
During his Standby Phase, Yugi takes 1000 damage from the combined effects of "Mask of the Accursed" and "Mask of Dispel" (Yugi: 2500 → 1500 LP). Yugi Summons "Alpha The Magnet Warrior" (1400/1700) in Attack Position, and uses it to attack and destroy Lumis' Set monster, revealed to be "Melchid the Four-Face Beast" (1500/1200).

Turn 15: Umbra
Umbra Summons "Rogue Doll" (1600/1000) in Attack Position, and uses it to attack Kaiba's "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". Lumis activates his Set "Mask of Weakness" and "Mask of Brutality", targeting "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" and "Rogue Doll" respectively. The former's ATK is reduced by 700 until the end of the turn, while the latter gains 1000 ATK and loses 1000 DEF. However, Yugi activates his Set "Mystical Refpanel", changing the target of Lumis' "Mask of Brutality" to "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" ("Blue-Eyes White Dragon": 3000 → 3300 ATK / 2500 → 1500 DEF).

The attack continues, and "Rogue Doll" is destroyed (Umbra: 3700 → 2000 LP). Umbra Sets a card. During the End Phase, the effect of "Mystical Refpanel" destroys "Mask of Brutality", and the effect of "Mask of Weakness" expires ("Blue-Eyes White Dragon": 3300 → 3000 ATK / 1500 → 2500 DEF).

Turn 16: Kaiba
Kaiba attacks Umbra directly with "Blue-Eyes White Dragon"; however, Umbra activates his Set "Mask of Impregnability", reducing all battle damage he receives from direct attacks this turn to 0. Kaiba asks Lumis if he had his own plan to protect himself from a direct attack. This causes Lumis to doubt whether Umbra would have protected him, forming a rift between the two.

Turn 17: Lumis
Lumis activates "Pot of Greed" to draw two cards. He then Sets a card and activates "Card Exchange" to exchange all the cards in his hand with those in Umbra's. He has no cards in his own hand, and so only takes Umbra's cards. He then activates his Set "Chosen One", choosing one Monster Card and two non-Monsters in his hand and select one at random. If it is a monster, Lumis can Summon it, ignoring the Summoning conditions. The card is chosen, and it is the monster, so Lumis Special Summons "Masked Beast Des Gardius" (3300/2500) in Attack Position.

Lumis is about to attack "Alpha The Magnet Warrior", but Kaiba goads him, stating that leaving "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" on the field is a mistake. Lumis rises to the bait and attacks and destroys "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" with "Masked Beast Des Gardius" (Kaiba: 2100 → 1800 LP).

Turn 18: Yugi
During his Standby Phase, Yugi takes 1000 damage from the combined effects of "Mask of the Accursed" and "Mask of Dispel" (Yugi: 1500 → 500 LP). Yugi Summons "Gamma The Magnet Warrior" (1500/1800) in Attack Position. He then Tributes his three different "Magnet Warrior" monsters to Special Summon "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior" (3500/3850) from his hand in Attack Position. Since they aren't being Tributed for a Tribute Summon, this isn't prevented by "Mask of Restrict".

Yugi Sets a card, then attacks and destroys "Masked Beast Des Gardius" with "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior" (Lumis: 4000 → 3800 LP). However, since it was sent from the field to the Graveyard, Lumis uses its effect to activate "The Mask of Remnants" directly from his Deck, equipping it to "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior". While equipped, Lumis takes control of the equipped monster.

Turn 19: Umbra
Umbra activates "Masquerade" to take control of "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior", as it's equipped with "The Mask of Remnants". Umbra attacks Yugi directly with "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior", but Yugi activates his Set "De-Fusion" to return "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior" to his Deck, and Special Summon "Alpha", "Beta", and "Gamma The Magnet Warrior" back to Umbra's field in Defense Position.

Turn 20: Kaiba
Kaiba activates "Soul Exchange". If he Tribute Summons a monster this turn, he can Tribute Umbra's monsters as if they were his own, which "Mask of Restrict" also can't prevent. He Tributes "Alpha", "Beta", and "Gamma The Magnet Warrior" to Tribute Summon "Obelisk the Tormentor" (4000/4000). Kaiba attacks Umbra directly with "Obelisk the Tormentor" (Umbra: 2000 → 0 LP).

With the defeat of Umbra, Marik takes control of Lumis' mind in order to taunt Yugi directly, before making Lumis falls unconscious. Therefore, Lumis loses by default.

Aftermath[edit]

Lumis and Umbra are defeated, and while Yugi and Kaiba each claim their sixth Locator Card needed to enter the Battle City Finals, they are no closer to finding their loved ones. Marik, despite losing two more of his pawns, isn't bothered by the loss. He knows all too well the power of an Egyptian God, and has made sure that other plans were well in place should his Rare Hunters fail.
