Zard

Zard (ザルド Zarudo) is a character appearing in the Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG Stories manga, and the main antagonist of the first half of the "Sky Striker" story.

Zard is the leader of the Spectra Union, having been constructed to automate the war against Karma and their Sky Strikers, to which he responded by creating microwave laser satellites that destroyed humanity. In the aftermath of its extinction, he and the remaining AIs (Solferina and Cyanos) formed the Three Pillars of Spectra and continued to fight against Karma's own AIs for the fate of the world. For many centuries he plotted to undermine what remained of the other nation for total domination over the planet, and when Raye suddenly appears and abruptly undermines the long-fought progress, he creates Roze and, later on, Azalea and Camellia to counter her. He is ultimately killed by Azalea.

Personality

As the leader of Spectra, Zard desires to defeat Karma and rule the world. He is willing to use many approaches to do so, but is cautious and willing to take his time and prepare when facing against them. While he holds confidence in Spectra's power, Zard doesn't underestimate his opponents when facing them in the war, creating different plans and contingencies, though this causes Zard to be rather chastizing towards his cohorts for not following his plans. Even so, he is considerably friendly with his fellow AIs and was upset when Solferina perished despite the many times they argued.[1]

Zard also holds knowledge on human culture and references. This causes him to scold Solferina for destroying any location tied to it, with him admitting to Cyanos during his creation of Roze that, to his own surprise, he does hold some interest in humanity and the odd impulse to treat Roze as his "pet".[1] Despite this, Zard holds little actual understanding of humans themselves. While he is capable of utilizing Raye's emotions to manipulate her at times, his treatment of the humans he creates is callous and condescending. Frustrated by his inability to control Roze and her frequent threats of destroying her creators, Zard begins planning to put her in stasis and keep her a mere source of genetic material for clones implanted with unextractable nanites that can deliver unbearable eletric shocks at the snap of his fingers as an easy punishment for insubordination, Azalea and Camellia being created as a test run for this.[2][3][4]

Zard often makes remarks that show disdain towards humans. In particular, after Azalea's betrayal, while accepting his faults for not raising Roze and her clones properly as Ciela told him, he also compares them to the old humans who started a war between each other which destroyed the planet, calling them "lower than animals when not properly educated".[5] Also, Cyanos admits that part of his reasoning to destroy Karma was ultimately due to his original directive to destroy them as humanity programmed him to despite Zard gaining his own desires.

Etymology

The Three Pillars of Spectra appear to be named after colors; "Zard" means "yellow" in Urdu.

Abilities

Zard was created to automate the war against Spectra. As such, he is great at data analysis, tactic formulations, etc. to defeat an enemy, making him to be the new leader of Spectra once humanity perished.

Ciela also attests to Zard being a brilliant scientist, more so than even her, having managed to make Roze from scratch and even accelerating her growth to become a superior Sky Striker than Raye in just 2 years.[1] He is also capable of designing mechas such as Zeke,[4] and managed to produce improved clones of Roze who are even stronger than her on very short notice.[2]
