Since player actions such as Summoning a monster, the normal draw during the Draw Phase and Attack declaration have no Spell Speed and do not start Chains, and thus cannot be Chained to, a player may respond to that action.

When responding to a player action by activating an effect, it is said that the effect is activated in response to the action. This starts a Chain and this Chain is said to be in response to the action. Activating an effect in response to an action need not be on the first Chain Link (directly activated after the action). An effect can still be activated in response to the action as long as it is activated in the aforementioned Chain.

Example 1: Player A summons a monster with 1500 or more ATK. The Player A uses his/her Priority as the Turn Player and activates "Mystical Space Typhoon". Player B can then activate "Bottomless Trap Hole". The Chain will be formed as follows:
Chain Link 1: Player B activates "Bottomless Trap Hole". (This is activated in response to the summon of the monster)
Chain Link 2: Player A activates "Mystical Space Typhoon". (This is activated in chain to the activation of Bottomless Trap Hole and in response to the summon of the monster.)

Note that the entire Chain is in response to the action.

Please note that the Summoning of a monster is not part of the Chain as it is not an effect. One should always be careful about the terms in response and in chain. It is incorrect to state that an effect is activated in chain to an action.

Activating an effect in response to an action can only be done so in the Chain that is in response to the action. Effects that are activated in a separate Chain from that are not activated in response to the action.
