Saburamen

Saburamen, known as Menzaburo Omori (おおもり めんざぶろう Ōmori Menzaburō) in the Japanese version, is a character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS anime. He is a student at Goha #3 Elementary who loves ramen, including ramen-themed cards in his Deck and dreaming of creating Dueling rules that unite Dueling and ramen.

Appearance

Full-body view of Saburamen

Saburamen is a tan-skinned, yellow-eyed boy with navy hair in swept-back spikes. He dresses in a combination of ninja-style clothing and thick country-style clothes; a black jumper over a thick light yellow shirt, red overalls with a light yellow lining turned up at the ankles, white and maroon shoes, maroon arm wrappings, and a red mask over his eyes. Saburamen also carries a ladle and a staff shaped like a pair of chopsticks.

Two years after the events of the series, Saburamen wears the male uniform of Goha 8 Middle School; a traditional black gakuren with the school's number pinned on the right collar and his grade (seventh grade) pinned on the left. He continues to wear his mask.

Personality

Saburamen is very upfront, introducing himself with a detailed statement of his personal information. He is incredibly respectful, speaking in formal linguistics similar to previous ninja-inspired characters in the series, though he can be broken out of this. When he feels he has done wrong, Saburamen is incredibly apologetic and respectful. Despite his formal speech, Saburamen is incredibly friendly with people he trusts, cheerfully greeting Yuga and his friends after they befriend one another.

Saburamen is very dedicated to ramen, prioritizing it over friends and different types of noodles over others; disrespecting ramen is a serious affront to him. When Celestia Noodlina offers to show him ramen across the galaxy, Saburamen leaps at the chance to do so and finds himself torn over keeping his promise to help Yuga and his own desires. He eventually decides to stop hesitating and tosses aside any sentimental feelings in his actions, though he does seem to regret effectively sending Celestia away.

Biography

Birth of Rush Duels

Saburamen making his entrance

Saburamen heard of the tasty ramen at the Ramen Hut, so he went there to order a bowl of ramen, only to find Yuga Ohdo, Romin Kassidy, Gavin Sogetsu and Kaizo there. Saburamen recognized Yuga from the Goha #7 Elementary Newspaper and admitted his own desire to create rules that fused Dueling and ramen. He ordered a bowl of ramen, but was horrified to learn it would be the last bowl the restaurant made. Yuga asked if he could have the last bowl, as he found it tasty, though his statement that he preferred udon angered Saburamen, who challenged Yuga to a Rush Duel for the last bowl. He Summoned "Spice the Elite Noodle Ninja" on his first turn, and prevented Yuga from destroying it by reducing the ATK of his "Sevens Road Magician" with "The Noodle Art of Pottery", though he was distracted by the noodles the shopkeeper was using. On his next turn, Saburamen reduced the ATK of "Sevens Road" and increased the ATK of his own monsters using the effect of "Spice" and his "The Noodle Art of Roastery", but Yuga prevented the destruction of "Sevens Road" and managed to stay in the Duel. Menzabruo used another "Pottery" to reduce the ATK of "Sevens Road" again and increased his own LP to 5000, but Yuga was able to reduce Saburamen's LP, switch "Spice" to Defense Position and boost the ATK of "Sevens Road" and bolster it with "Pierce!", defeating "Spice" and Saburamen. Yuga offered to share the last ramen with Saburamen, but to Saburamen's anger, Luke ate the ramen before they could, though fortunately the owner revealed he had been inspired by the Rush Duel and would try to stay open. Saburamen helped him by telling Briscoe and Sushiko Maki about the Ramen Hut, and their word-of-mouth restored the restaurant's customer base. Yuga took Saburamen to the Hologram Man's chamber to help him install his rules, but they found the chamber deserted.[1]

Saburamen arriving at the RoaRomin concert to cater

Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko were hired by Roa Kassidy to cater for a RoaRomin concert one weekend. Saburamen rode in with ramen, and happily greeted Yuga and his friends, who were watching Gavin and Romin Rush Dueling. Saburamen watched in surprise as Romin entered a berserk state and defeated Gavin, but she returned to normal after eating a chocolate bar ejected by her Duel Guitar.[5] After the Duel, Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko realized they had inadvertently aided in Gavin's defeat and they apologized to him and Yuga, though Gavin reassured them it wasn't their fault. Romin then tried to warn Yuga not to Duel Roa, though Yuga still accepted Roa's challenge. During the Duel, Roa called the legality of "Sevens Road Magician" into question after Yuga told them he had received the card from a Duelist disqualified from the 666th Goha Dueling Tournament who had taught him his current outlook. Yuga remained silent as the card's legality was debated, and Saburamen and Gavin began to doubt him until Luke convinced them that Yuga wouldn't cheat, as he wouldn't have wanted to make new rules if he didn't respect them. He rallied Yuga's friends to find information on "Sevens Road Magician", and Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko began asking Goha #3 Elementary students if they had heard of the card. Saburamen returned to the stage with Gavin and Rino Nanahoshi, having been unsuccessful in finding any information.[6] Yuga drew "Sevens Road Magician", but then a Relic emerged from the ground and projected the Hologram Man, who introduced himself as Otes and revealed that he had chosen Yuga to become the King of Duels. The Goha 7th Newspaper Club then arrived and projected footage of Otes giving Yuga "Sevens Road Magician" and being disqualified, clarifying that he had been so due to being a Goha employee. Roa had been blocking the information on "Sevens Road Magician" and had also been at the 666th Goha Dueling Tournament when Otes gave "Sevens Road Magician" to Yuga. He asked Otes why he hadn't been chosen as King of Duels, and Yuga offered to continue the Duel with the title on the line, prompting Luke to suggest even he could become the King of Duels, though Saburamen was skeptical. Yuga eventually defeated Roa, and Saburamen congratulated Yuga, impressed by Roa's nerve in asking the audience to cheer for his victorious opponent. Afterwards, Otes and the Relic sank into the ground again.[7]

Maximum

Some time after Yuga and Roa's Duel, Saburamen received a penalty on his Duel Disk while he was eating ramen at a restaurant.[8] Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko went to the Road Laboratory, where they learned that they had been penalized due to a challenge that Goha Duel Overseer Nail Saionji had set to Yuga to retrieve the data of Kaizo; if any of Yuga's friends lost a Duel, as Mimi Imimi, a Goha Enterprises executive who had befriended Yuga had, they would all be penalized. Saburamen enthusiastically volunteered to help Yuga's honor, but Yuga, Luke and Gavin were then dropped into the Garden of Curiosity; Saburamen tried to save Romin from falling in himself, but failed and they both fell into the Garden as well. Once they were inside, Saburamen heard someone moving in the shadows and threw chopsticks at the individual, who introduced herself as Mysterious M and told them that they would find Nail's haven in the Gate of Curiosity. After three hours they were no closer to finding the Gate, though Saburamen smelled ramen and led them to Out of This World Ramen, a ramen store in the Garden that was popular with Goha employees staffed by Celestia Noodlina, who claimed to be an alien. Saburamen was floored by the taste of Celestia's ramen and eagerly accepted her offer to travel the galaxy sampling the ramen of other worlds. Celestia then challenged them to a Duel, one that Saburamen accepted. Though Celestia's "Outer Space" Field Spell Card posed him some initial problems, Saburamen brought out "Spice" and gained a significant early lead, resulting in Celestia beginning to react strangely. Celestia revealed that her LP powered her ship, and Saburamen realized that he would trap Celestia on Earth and prevent them from travelling the galaxy if he won the Duel. Celestia made a comeback with her ace monster, "Cosmic String Noodryad", destroying "Spice" with its effect and Summoning enough monsters to wipe Saburamen out as Saburamen continued to fret over what to do. Romin then asked Saburamen what was bothering him, and Saburamen blurted out his dilemma. Yuga commented that he would have chosen outer space in a heartbeat, but Saburamen was the only person who could see his own potential and road. Seeing a new universe forming behind Yuga, Saburamen saw his own Noodle Road stretching across galaxies, and he regained his resolve, defending himself from Celestia's final attack. On his next turn, Saburamen summoned his new ace monster, "Extra Spice the Elite Noodle Ninja", and he combined it with his Spells to manipulate the ATK of the monsters on the field and defeat Celestia. Afterwards, Saburamen ran to Celestia, who admitted she would have to say goodbye now to return home and recharge her LP. She told Saburamen she would never forget him as her mothership returned her home. After Celestia had left, Yuga suggested they continue their search for the Gate of Curiosity, though Saburamen briefly remained at the Out of This World Ramen as he vowed to never forget Celestia.[9]

Saburamen and Yuga were unable to find the Gate of Curiosity before being returned to the surface. A few days later, Saburamen was eating ramen at the Ramen Hut shortly after receiving another penalty on his Duel Disk when Luke came to him and the owner and asked if they knew anything about Maximum Summoning, though Saburamen had never heard of it before. Saburamen later received three more penalties on his Duel Disk.[10] Saburamen was with Briscoe and Sushiko when he witnessed Nail Maximum Summoning "Yggdrago the Sky Emperor", which coiled around the Goha Enterprises Main Office.[11] Saburamen watched as "Yggdrago" battled with Yuga's own Maximum Monster, "Supreme Machine Magnum Overlord", expressing relief when Yuga was able to save it by returning it to his hand to negate one of Nail's attacks and commenting that it was an anxious situation. Yuga was pushed into a corner and reminded of the stakes of the match, which reminded Saburamen that due to his five penalties his account would be deleted if Yuga lost the Rush Duel, though many other elementary students in Goha City declared their support for Yuga and were penalized as well. Saburamen was pleased when Yuga was able to redrew his Maximum Monsters, but disheartened when Nail returned them to Yuga's Deck again, though fortunately Yuga was able to redraw them and Maximum Summon "Magnum Overlord" again. After Yuga defeated Nail, Nail erased the penalties on Saburamen's Duel Disk.[12]

Goha 6th Elementary

Saburamen, Sushiko and Briscoe attended the Rush Duel Training Camp for the Rush Duel Tournament, accompanying Goha #2 Elementary's Duel Dinosaur Club and Goha #5 Elementary's Dueling Insects Club, meeting with Yuga, Luke, Romin and Gavin when they arrived. That night as Briscoe was cooking meat for their dinner, Saburamen entered the cabin to find Sushiko and Romin Dueling and expressed surprise that Romin's Dueling style required her to lose LP. Sushiko's strategy eventually frustrated Romin to the point that she awakened, though Saburamen was more worried that she had snapped, though Romin returned to normal after seeing Princess G on an ad for Itamae's Case Files. Sushiko was able to survive Romin's attacks and make a comeback to defeat her, and Briscoe brought in his roast after the Rush Duel, which Saburamen praised him on.[13] Saburamen and his friends left the camp on the second night.[14]

Team Battle Royal

Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko learned about the Goha Rush Duel Team Battle Royal from Prioria Sweetalina's announcement.[15] They decided to enter as a team, attending the registration at Goha Stadium.[16] They attended the opening ceremonies of the tournament, though they were confused by the Goha President initially laughing for her opening speech until she encouraged them normally. She was challenged to a Rush Duel by Roa, who wanted to talk with the incarcerated Otes and defeated her.[17]

Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko made it through the first day of the tournament as the Gourmet Comrades Team.[18] Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko received word from Rino that Luke, Romin and Gavin required aid in discovering the identities of a group calling themselves "Goha 66", and they joined forces with the Newspaper Club and Post-Apocalyptic Club to rescue Team King Luke's Kings from defeated Duelists trying to rejoin the tournament; Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko accompanying Luke, Romin and Gavin to Maximum Mountain at Scoop Pitman's suggestion. They eventually found a Stonehenge made from baking that the starving Romin and Luke began to devour, built by Prioria Sweetalina, the tournament presenter, who Saburamen believed to Celestia Noodlina. To his dismay, Prioria denied being Celestia and Saburamen hid away in heartbreak, leaving Briscoe to Duel Prioria. After the Duel, Briscoe became fond of Prioria as Saburamen had been of Celestia, but Prioria also had to leave, leaving Briscoe in the same state as Saburamen, and they comforted one another in their misery.[19]

Saburamen, Briscoe, Sushiko, Romin, Luke and Gavin continued on to the Abandoned Dorm, reaching it after Romin and Luke swam off their food when they fell into a river. However when they arrived they were opposed by Tyler Getz, Toombs and Kaizo, now working for Goha 66. Kaizo had joined Goha 66 in revenge for his mistreatment by Yuga and Luke and challenged Luke to a Duel. Saburamen was both shocked and impressed by Kaizo's business strategy during the Duel, though Luke was able to successfully destroy Kaizo's recovered Trap Card and defeat him. After the Duel Saburamen, Sushiko and Briscoe examined Kaizo's new robot body, only to find that he had escaped. Luke disabled Kaizo and they brought him into Maximum Mountain where they found the Heavy Cavalry Duel Club and Luke's sister Tiger having defeated the members of Goha 66, and Luke used Kaizo's confession switch to force him to reveal that Goha 66 were trying to take over the main Dueling server and subsequently Goha Enterprises and the Dueling world; the server itself being buried in Maximum Mountain.[20] Saburamen was surprised that Asana Mutsuba hadn't realized she knew Luke from her childhood and watched as Tiger yelled everyone who spoke up into a wall as she wanted to settle a childhood rivalry with Asana; Saburamen clamming up when Tiger asked if anyone else wanted to interrupt. Saburamen watched the ensuing Rush Duel, where Tiger and Asana settled their rivalry after learning that Asana had separated from Tiger while they were trying to find a missing Luke in their youth to rescue Schubel Quill and Pidgetrap. After Asana defeated Tiger, Tiger yelled Luke into a wall that shattered to reveal the supposed main server, but Kaizo revealed that it was too small to be the server Goha 66 sought.[21]

Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko attended the finals of the Goha Rush Duel Team Battle Royal the next day, watching Romin's victory against Roa and Gavin's Duel against Nail and his new "DJ G" persona. Faced with "Yggdrago the Sky Emperor", Gavin eventually returned to his normal persona after a power outage in the stadium and forced a DRAW, leaving Yuga and Luke to have a final Duel.[22][23]

Saburamen watched Yuga and Luke's Rush Duel, where the power in the stadium began to fail again, revealed to be due to the Goha Duel Server being hacked, and Saburamen witnessed the revelation of the Goha Duel Server on the moon and the Rush Duel Program contained within, under attack by Goha Enterprises Drones that were uninstalling it and had been all tournament.[24] Despite knowing their Duel would complete the uninstallation, Yuga and Luke continued to Duel. Saburamen applauded when Luke eventually won, resulting in the uninstallation of Rush Dueling, but Yuga and Nail were able to reinstall the program and install it in the Super Rush Robot to protect it from another attack. Saburamen then watched Luke's coronation as King of Duels.[25]

Goha 6 Siblings

The true Goha Presidents, the Goha Six, returned to Earth, evicted the current president, Mimi Imimi, and challenged Yuga and his friends to Rush Duels with the Super Rush Robot held hostage by Forcersizers that would shake it apart unless Yuga defeated the six siblings.[26] Saburamen was in Goha City one night with Sushiko, Briscoe, the Duelstronauts and the Duel Dinosaur Club when he watched the Rush Duel between Yuga and The Lukeman, including Yuo Goha's rage after he believed Yuga and The Lukeman weren't taking the Duel seriously. To Saburamen's shock a meteor entered the atmosphere and plunged towards Yuga, having been dragged in by the Goha Meteor Shower, and Yuga blocked the meteor with his Duel Disk, acquiring the "Fusion" card contained within it and using it to defeat The Lukeman, saving the Super Rush Robot.[27]

Goha Employee

Yuga was employed by Goha Enterprises, and created "Original Duel Development", which allowed anyone to create and upload their own Dueling rules. Saburamen wasted little time in finally realizing his dream of creating Ramen Duels.[28] Later in the Ramen Hut, Saburamen and Sushiko used Real-Time Rush Duel Programming to merge Ramen Duels with Sushiko's Sushi Duels, and Saburamen was eager to further combine their format with Briscoe's Wagyu Karubi Duels. They then heard other kids arguing over which format was best, including one boy who supported Ramen Duels, and Saburamen asked them not to fight, Scoop agreeing that Yuga wouldn't want them to argue. However, Yuga Goha, the true identity of Swirls, arrived and claimed it was natural to want to know which formula worked best, successfully convincing the other kids to continue their standoff. Saburamen challenged Yuga Goha to a Duel, despite the protests of Nail Saionji that Yuga Goha had a card that could wipe their memories but he was defeated and had his memories of Rush Dueling and those he'd met because of it wiped. The following day Saburamen, Sushiko and Briscoe were approached by Romin, but didn't remember her beyond her RoaRomin membership, Saburamen expressing surprise she would approach them so casually before departing.[29]

King of Duels

Saburamen's memories were eventually restored when Luke defeated him in a Duel and rallied him and their other friends whose memories had been affected to stop the arguments between Dueling fans during Romin's solo debut; Saburamen successfully helping to calm the crowd. This caused Romin, whose own memory had been wiped by Yuga Goha, to regain her memory.[30] Saburamen also watched the subsequent Rush Duel between Romin and Princess G to determine Romin's focus; Romin eventually won and decided to pursue both Rush Duels and music.[31]

Saburamen and his friends watched the broadcast Rush Duel between Yuga and Otes in orbit around the Moon, Saburamen continuing to encourage people not to fight and to focus on the Duel to prevent more formats from being installed. During the Rush Duel, Otes' servants uninstalled their formats from the Goha Duel Server, resulting in the corresponding physical constructs being ejected from the server and slung at the Super Rush Robot that Yuga was Rush Dueling from; Saburamen uninstalled his own format in turn to block Celestia's from striking the Super Rush Robot. Saburamen also learned that Otes had created Dueling and desired to destroy it out of despair of the state Goha Enterprises had brought it to.[32] Yuga eventually removed his friends from the Super Rush Robot and left to finish the Rush Duel with Otes alone, but due to using his Duel ID card to create another "Sevens Road Magician" for his Rush Duel with Luke, Yuga was forced to push the Super Rush Robot and Otes Robot to lightspeed to win before re-entering the range of the Goha Duel Server. Before Yuga vanished, the sight of him wearing the Goha Six's crown to control the Forcersizers attached to the Super Rush Robot caused Saburamen to recognize Yuga as the King of Duels after recalling its legend.[2]

Two years later, Saburamen had graduated from Goha #3 Elementary and enrolled in Goha #8 Middle School with Sushiko and Briscoe. They arrived at school one morning with their food stalls, much to Gavin's dismay. Later that day they received word that Yuga was returning, and they went to Goha Harbor to await Yuga's arrival.[2]

Deck

Saburamen uses a Pyro Deck, composed of the "Noodle Ninja" series of cards. His Deck revolves around continuously manipulating the ATK values of monsters on the field to maintain an advantage, often centered around the number of Normal Monsters in the Graveyards.
