Yugi and Joey's Battle City Duel is a Duel played between Yugi Muto and Joey Wheeler, orchestrated by Marik Ishtar in an attempt to destroy the pharaoh by using the friends he cherishes.

Prior events

Immediately after the defeat of Lumis and Umbra, Yugi and Kaiba are at a loss on how to find Joey Wheeler, Téa Gardner, and Mokuba Kaiba, all of whom were taken prisoner by Marik Ishtar and his Rare Hunters. Suddenly, a helicopter descends from the sky onto the building on which the Duel took place, and inside is none other than Mokuba Kaiba himself, who not only managed to escape, but also knows where Joey and Téa were taken. The trio set off for the Domino City pier.

After an introspective helicopter ride, touching on the subjects of the identity of Marik Ishtar, of pharaohs and Ancient Egyptian prophecies carved in stone, and of the true nature of magic in the world, they finally arrive at the pier. But rather than find a host of Rare Hunters waiting in ambush, Yugi is shocked to see Joey himself, standing alone. And suddenly, Yugi realizes that Lumis and Umbra were only a diversion for Marik's true goal. Marik has used the Millennium Rod to completely take control of Joey's mind.

Yugi beseeches Joey to come to his senses, but Joey activates his Duel Disk, challenging Yugi to a Duel. Yugi appeals to Joey's loyalty to his friends, and to the promise he made when he gave Yugi his "Red-Eyes Black Dragon". Joey, only telling Yugi to follow him, stalks away towards the sea. Yugi hesitates: if he goes, he and Joey will surely be in another of Marik's deranged traps, but if he doesn't, he'll never be able to free Joey. His hesitation is ended abruptly by the voice of Téa Gardner. Rather, the voice of Marik speaking through her, informing Yugi that Joey isn't the only friend he risks losing today.

Téa leads Yugi to a wooden Duel arena floating on the water, on which sits two chains connected to a large anchor hanging above their heads. Below the players feet, a box containing the key to their chain sits locked, connected to their opponent's LP total. When a player's LP reach 0, they will have a thirty seconds to retrieve their key and unchain themselves, or else be dragged into the sea when the anchor drops. And in the event that Yugi has doubts about playing, Marik has an added incentive. Téa has been strapped to a nearby chair, with a cargo crate hanging above her on a crane set to a remote control operated by a Rare Hunter, and should Yugi refuse to play along, or should Kaiba try to interfere, Téa won't be so lucky. He releases his hold on Téa then, allowing her to witness the spectacle as well.

A timer hanging above the anchor starts its countdown. In a short time, should the Duel not reach its conclusion, both players will be dragged to the depths. The clock is running, and the Duel begins.

...But before beginning, Marik demands that Yugi remove "Slifer the Sky Dragon" from his Deck and place it securely at his feet. There would be no sense in throwing Yugi to the sea if the God Card went with him. Yugi obliges, but at the same time places another certain monster in his Deck.

The Duel

Turn 1: Yugi
Yugi Summons "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" (1500/1200) in Defense Position.

Turn 2: Joey
Joey draws "Raigeki" and subsequently activates it to destroy all monsters Yugi controls. He then Normal Summons "Alligator's Sword" (1500/1200) in Attack Position. "Alligator's Sword" attacks directly (Yugi: 4000 → 2500 LP).

Turn 3: Yugi
Yugi Summons "Big Shield Gardna" (100/2600) in Defense Position.

Turn 4: Joey
Joey draws "Hinotama" and subsequently activates it to inflict 500 damage to Yugi (Yugi: 2500 → 2000 LP).

Turn 5: Yugi
Yugi Sets a card, then Summons "Kuriboh" (300/200) in Attack Position.

Turn 6: Joey
Joey attacks "Kuriboh" with "Alligator's Sword", but Yugi activates his Set "Spellbinding Circle" to stop the attack, and reduce the ATK of "Alligator's Sword" by 700 ("Alligator's Sword": 1500 → 800 ATK). Joey activates another "Hinotama" to inflict another 500 damage to Yugi (Yugi: 2000 → 1500 LP).

Turn 7: Yugi
At this point, the true Yugi takes control of his body back from the pharaoh. Yugi draws "Red-Eyes Black Dragon", which he added to his Deck just before the Duel began. In an attempt to bring Joey to his senses, Yugi activates "Exchange", forcing both players to reveal their hands and add a card from their opponent's hand to their own. Joey's hand contains "Graceful Dice", "Rocket Warrior", "Magical Arm Shield", and another "Hinotama", while Yugi's hand contains "Mystic Box", "Card Destruction", "De-Spell", and "Red-Eyes Black Dragon".

Marik recognizes the value of having "Red-Eyes", and orders Joey to take it from Yugi. Seeing "Red-Eyes", however, has shaken Marik's hold over Joey's mind. Marik attempts to reassert control, but Joey's loyalty to his friends wins over Marik's magic, and in an act of rebellion, the real Joey takes Yugi's "Card Destruction". Marik's control returns, and "Joey" insists that he doesn't need another monster to finish Yugi. Yugi is unconvinced, and in exchange for his card, he takes Joey's "Magical Arm Shield".

Yugi Tributes "Big Shield Gardna" and "Kuriboh" to Tribute Summon "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" (2400/2000) in Attack Position. He then attacks and destroys "Alligator's Sword" with "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" (Joey: 4000 → 2400 LP). Marik's magic wavers again, longer this time, but he still has control of Joey's mind.

Turn 8: Joey
Joey activates his third "Hinotama" to inflict 500 damage to Yugi (Yugi: 1500 → 1000 LP). He then Summons "Rocket Warrior" (1500/1300) in Attack Position. In addition, he activates the Continuous Spell "Attrition". If his monster attacks an opponent's monster, but that opponent's monster isn't destroyed by that battle, that monster will lose ATK equal to his attacking monster's ATK.

Joey attacks "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" with "Rocket Warrior". However, during his own Battle Phase, "Rocket Warrior" cannot be destroyed by battle, and Joey takes no battle damage from battles involving it. In addition, after damage calculation, "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" loses 500 ATK, then, since it wasn't destroyed by this battle, the effect of "Attrition" reduces its ATK by the ATK of "Rocket Warrior" ("Red-Eyes Black Dragon": 2400 → 1900 → 400 ATK).

The sight of "Red-Eyes" being weakened damages Marik's control, and Yugi follows up by crossing the field and giving Joey his Millennium Puzzle. Marik demands that Joey hurl the Puzzle into the sea, so that the pharaoh's vessel will lose its power (and where it can be safely retrieved after the Duel is won). However, the true Joey once again wins out over Marik, and Joey keeps the Puzzle around his neck. During the End Phase, the effect of "Rocket Warrior" expires ("Red-Eyes Black Dragon": 400 → 900 ATK).

Turn 9: Yugi
Yugi Sets two cards and Summons "Beta The Magnet Warrior" (1700/1600) in Attack Position.

Turn 10: Joey
Joey draws "Panther Warrior" and subsequently Summons it (2000/1600) in Attack Position. Marik orders Joey to use "Panther Warrior" to destroy "Red-Eyes Black Dragon", ending the Duel, but Joey rebels again, and intead uses "Rocket Warrior" to attack "Beta The Magnet Warrior".

In response, Yugi activates his Set "Magical Arm Shield" to change the attack target to "Panther Warrior" instead. During Joey's Battle Phase, "Rocket Warrior" cannot be destroyed and he takes no battle damage. The effects of "Rocket Warrior" and "Attrition" activate, and "Panther Warrior" loses a total of 2000 ATK ("Panther Warrior": 2000 → 0 ATK). During the End Phase, the effect of "Rocket Warrior" expires ("Panther Warrior": 0 → 500 ATK).

Turn 11: Yugi
Yugi draws "Beast of Gilfer" and subsequently Tributes "Beta The Magnet Warrior" to Tribute Summon it (2200/2000) in Attack Position. Yugi attacks and destroys "Rocket Warrior" with "Beast of Gilfer" (Joey: 2400 → 1700 LP)

Turn 12: Joey
Joey Sets two cards.

Turn 13: Yugi
Yugi Sets a card. He then attacks "Panther Warrior" with "Beast of Gilfer". However, Joey activates his Set "Skull Dice" and "Graceful Dice". For each card, he will roll a six-sided die. "Graceful Dice" will multiply the ATK of "Panther Warrior" by the result, while "Skull Dice" will divide the ATK of "Beast of Gilfer" by the result. Yugi responds with his Set "De-Spell", nullifying the effect of "Graceful Dice".

Joey rolls his die for "Skull Dice", and the result is a two, so the ATK of "Beast of Gilfer" is halved ("Beast of Gilfer": 2200 → 1100 ATK). The attack continues, and "Panther Warrior" is destroyed (Joey: 1700 → 1100 LP). During the End Phase, the effect of "Skull Dice" expires ("Beast of Gilfer": 1100 → 2200 ATK).

Turn 14: Joey
Joey draws "Meteor of Destruction". With it, Joey could win the Duel in a single move, and so Marik orders Joey to play it. Joey, realizing that doing so would mean Yugi would be dragged into the sea, adamantly refuses. Marik's control starts to crack, and so Marik unleashes more of the Millennium Rod's power to force Joey to his will. Bull-headed and strong-willed, Joey continues to resist. Yugi makes a declaration: even if the timer runs out, and both players are dragged to the depths, Joey has refused to fight his friend and has prevailed over Marik's Millennium Rod, and that makes Marik the only real loser of this Duel.

This enrages Marik, who unleashes the full power of the Millennium Rod to completely crush Joey's resistance and take full control. Marik immediately activates "Meteor of Destruction", paying 500 LP (Joey: 1100 → 600 LP) to inflict 1000 damage to Yugi. However, despite being too late to prevent it, this gives Joey the strength to do the impossible, and completely break free of Marik's mind control. Yugi activates his Set "Mystical Refpanel" to stop "Meteor of Destruction". He can now choose which player will receive its effects.

Yugi thanks Joey for being his best friend through thick and thin, and asks that he take care of the Millennium Puzzle. He then commands "Mystical Refpanel" to turn the "Meteor of Destruction" back on its original course. The effect resolves (Yugi: 1000 → 0 LP), and the key box to Joey's chain is opened. In a desperate bid to save Yugi from his fate, despite that Yugi's LP have already reached 0 and that the Duel should be over, Joey activates the last effect of "Meteor of Destruction". After resolving, he can force one of Yugi's monsters to attack. Joey forces "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" to attack him directly (Joey: 600 → 0 LP), opening Yugi's key box.

The Duel ends in a DRAW.

Aftermath

Without hesitation, Joey removes his Duel Disk and the Puzzle, and swings across the Duel arena to reach Yugi. Just as he grabs the key to Yugi's chain, however, the 30 seconds he had to free himself from his own chain reaches 0, and the anchor drops. Both Yugi and Joey are pulled under the water, while everyone watching - Kaiba, Mokuba, and Téa (freed from her trap with Kaiba's quick thinking), as well as new onlookers Tristan Taylor, Duke Devlin, Mai Valentine, and, fresh out of the hospital, Serenity Wheeler, Joey's younger sister.

Under the water, Joey uses Yugi's key to unlock Yugi's chain. Yugi floats to the surface, where Tristan can pull him out, but Joey remains under the water, having neglected to grab his own key. Suddenly, he sees a figure swimming down towards him, who he thinks is Yugi coming back to rescue him. However, the shape soon shows itself not to be his friend, but his little sister Serenity, who unlocks his chain and pulls him to the surface. The once near-blind girl has finally taken off her bandages, only to find her first sight to be her brother being taken below the waves. So without hesitation, she grabbed Joey's key and dove into the water after him.

Back on dry land, Joey apologizes profusely for what he did. Yugi assures him that he isn't to blame for this, and that he rescued him in the end. Joey retorts that it will never be alright, because he was the one who put Yugi in that situation to begin with, and that he doesn't deserve to continue on with the tournament now. Mai, who's seen Joey at his worst before, tells him to get a grip, and Tristan tells him to stop feeling sorry for himself. But it's Serenity's words, that Joey's showed her what real courage is today, that get through to him.

Night is falling on the pier, and the gang stands together, united. Joey returns the Millennium Puzzle to Yugi, and thinks how lucky he is to have friends like these. The Kaiba brothers set off on their own to prepare for the Battle City finals, and Yugi thanks him for his help today. Yugi and Joey have qualified for the finals as well, and Yugi knows that Marik will strike there next. But he knows that together, they will be ready for whatever tricks he throws at them.
