Spellcaster (Japanese: 魔法使い Mahōtsukai "Magician") is a Type consisting of beings that control magic, such as witches, wizards, and mages. The majority of these creatures contain effects and can be very versatile Monsters, used often with support of Spell Cards. Out of all types, Spellcasters are the most present on the current Forbidden and Limited lists.
+
* This card can be searched by "Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders", "Starliege Seyfert", "Bystial Magnamhut", "Tempest, Dragon Ruler of Storms", "Dragon's Glory of Light and Dark", "Draconnection", "Blue-Eyes Abyss Dragon", "Krystal Dragon", "Aussa the Earth Charmer, Immovable", "Frontline Observer", "Witch of the Black Forest", and other generic searchers.

A high proportion of Spellcaster monsters are either LIGHT or DARK and are the most prolific users of Spell Counters.
+
* If you have  "The Melody of Awakening Dragon" and one "The White Stone of Legend", you can easy bring 3 copies of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from your Deck to Special Summon this card with a 7200 ATK.
 +
** You can also use "The Melody of Awakening Dragon" to search two copies of "Nekroz of Decisive Armor" plus one "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" using "The White Stone of Legend" as cost.

Archetypes include "Dark Magician", "Exodia", "Forbidden One", "Fortune Lady", "Gagaga", "Gravekeeper's", "Magician", "Magician Girl", "Performage", "Prophecy", and "Shaddoll".
+
* This card works well in a "Malefic" Deck, since all "Malefic" monsters have high Levels with the exception of "Malefic Parallel Gear".

They also have two of their own Structure Decks, Spellcaster's Judgment and Lord of the Magician, the latter of which was originally released in OCG, but has a TCG counterpart, Spellcaster's Command.
+
* Use this card in an "Earthbound Immortal" Deck, to discard 3 copies of "Earthbound Immortal", this way this card will have 9000 ATK, then use "Lightning Vortex" and attack for a possible OTK.
 +
** You can use "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon any "Earthbound Immortal" you send to the Graveyard through this card's effect (be sure to have a Field Spell on the field before doing so).
 +
** Another possibility is to use "Dark Hole" before you Special Summon "Montage Dragon", thus destroying any face-down monsters your opponent might have as well as the face-up ones.

Almost every main protagonist uses Spellcaster-Type monsters in their Decks. Yugi Muto uses "Dark Magician", "Dark Magician Girl", "Dark Sage", "Magician of Black Chaos", "Breaker the Magical Warrior", along with many others; Jaden Yuki uses "Card Ejector" and "Miracle Flipper"; Yusei Fudo uses "Effect Veiler", "Arbitrator of Mediation", "Stardust Phantom", "Mystic Piper" and "Salvagent"; Yuma Tsukumo uses "Gagaga Magician", "Gagaga Girl", "Flelf" and "Gagaga Child", and "Number 11: Big Eye"; Yuya Sakaki uses "Stargazer Magician", "Timegazer Magician", "Xiangke Magician", "Xiangsheng Magician", "Performapal Trump Girl", "Performapal Trump Witch" and "Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer". Yusaku Fujiki does not, as he uses a Cyberse Deck, but several of his monsters, including "Cyberse Wizard", "Cyberse Witch" and "Cyberse Magician", heavily resemble Spellcasters. Other characters that use Spellcasters include Carly Carmine, Fortuno, Rin, and Emma Bessho.
+
* This card is good in a high-Level Deck if you have Nomi-dead draws in your hand.

Types of Spellcaster Decks
+
* This card can also be used as an offensive power in typically passive-defensive "Gusto" Decks and at the same time sending "Gusto" monsters to the Graveyard instead of waiting for a "Gusto" monster to be destroyed (thus allowing many effects of "Gusto" monster to take place faster).
Dark Magician Beatdown
The main idea of this Deck is to Summon "Dark Magician" along with some other cards like "Cybernetic Magician", "Dark Magician Girl" or some other strong Spellcasters. If you use it wisely, it is very effective, blocking your opponent's Spell Cards with "Secret Village of the Spellcasters" and negate his or her traps with Sorcerer of Dark Magic leaving your opponent open to your attacks  with your best magicians. Using base spellcasters-Special Summon cards like "Magical Dimension" or "Magician's Circle" and some field-cleaning cards like "Lightning Vortex" and "Thousand Knives" and also "Dark Magic Attack" you can fill your field fairly fast, and because this Deck doesn't use a lot of traps you could add "Royal Decree" with no problem, another advantage is that being a pure Deck you could use "Rivalry of Warlords" to stop Synchro-based Decks. One can also combine "Royal Decree" with "Secret Village of the Spellcasters" to acheive a lockdown, albeit this only works if your opponent isn't using a Spellcaster deck as well.

Spell Burn
+
* You can use "Summoner's Art" to get high Level monsters Normal Monsters (Eg. "Blue-Eyes White Dragon") to your hand, send them to Graveyard in-order to Summon this card and use "Birthright" to get the monster back.
The very first Deck that introduced the use of Spell Counters and reusing Spell Cards. This Deck focused on Summoning "Dark Magician", then Special Summoning "Dark Eradicator Warlock". Once Normal Spell Cards were activated, it inflicts 1000 LP damage to the opponent, no matter which player plays the Spell Card. These Decks take patience and skill. Other key cards in the Deck would be cards that allow you to re-use Spell Cards (like "Hidden Spellbook"), and cards to keep your Spellcasters alive. "Royal Decree", "Jinzo", and even "Magical Hats" can protect your Spellcasters and stop Trap Cards from getting in your way.

Spellcaster Lockdown
+
* By using "Backup Soldier" you won't lose that much hand advantage, being able to recover up to 3 Normal Monsters, for the ability to Summon "Montage Dragon".
Although probably one of the most effective strategies against any Deck when completed, it is most definitely one of the most complicated to achieve, since it takes skill and some luck. The purpose of this Deck is to stop your opponent from using Spell, Trap or Effect Monster to get any sort of advantage, hence the name. The cards needed are: "Dark Paladin", "Sorcerer of Dark Magic", and "Destiny Hero - Plasma". Both "Secret Village of the Spellcasters" and "Secret Sanctuary of the Spellcasters" can also be used when "Sorcerer of Dark Magic" is on the field, since it is easier to get onto the field than Dark Paladin.

Because the main cards need to be Special Summoned in conditions sometimes hard to fulfill, some very useful support cards are "Magical Dimension", "Royal Decree" and "Divine Wrath", since they can be used as temporary substitutes for the main cards. Another substitute option are "Sage of Stillness" and "Sage of Silence", who are also Spellcasters, but need a power up achievable with cards like "United We Stand" or "Mage Power" to be able to activate their effects.
+
* This card works well with "Thunder Dragon" - discard one to get two of the pieces for "Montage Dragon". And this way, "Montage Dragon" will have a minimum of 3300 ATK.

At least one "Dark Magician" and "Buster Blader" is needed to Fusion Summon "Dark Paladin", it sometimes represents a problem to draw the right cards at the right time, so "Royal Magical Library" and "Jar of Greed" can help your chances .This Deck can benefit from a "Skilled Dark Magician" and with "Magical Citadel of Endymion" it will help you both get out a "Dark Magician and draw cards. "Mirror Force", "Trap Jammer", "Anti-Spell", or any of the more common attack blocker traps, such as "Sakuretsu Armor", "Dimensional Prison", or "Scrap-Iron Scarecrow", will help protect your combos.
+
* In a Dragon-Type Deck, you can send high-Level Dragons such as "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to Summon a "Montage Dragon" with around 6000 ATK (if you send from Level 6 to 8 monsters) and then use "Dragon's Mirror" to Summon yet another powerful monster like "Five-Headed Dragon" or "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon".

Since most Decks, especially in the Meta, rely on either Spell, Trap or Monster effects, their strategy will be trashed and they'll have no other way to beat you other than attack, but you can use two  or "Magician's Valkyria" and a Miracle Flipper to stop even that.
+
* Level 10 monsters that can go in the Deck, such as "Armed Dragon LV10", are especially effective to discard.

Spell Counter Stall
+
* Discard 3 DARK monsters to Summon "Montage Dragon" and Special Summon "Dark Armed Dragon" easily this way.
This Deck can easily be used to burn through your opponent's deck, but takes a lot of patience to pull off. This basically revolves around the effect of "Defender, the Magical Knight" to stop your Spellcasters being destroyed. This Deck is best used with the help of cards like "Magical Exemplar" and "Magical Citadel of Endymion" for easy access to Spell Counters. The added effect of the Citadel gives you Spell Counters from a destroyed monster with Spell Counters on it. Other cards like "Pitch-Black Power Stone" and "Alchemist of Black Spells" help to give you more Spell Counters each turn. "Summoner Monk" is also very useful for searching out Defender, Exemplar, and Alchemist and also for easy Xyz Summoning into "Alchemic Magician" for searching out Spell Cards like "Mega Ton Magical Cannon" to ready your offensive attack. As for beatsticks, the inclusion of "Blizzard Princess" can greatly help you out as the effect stops Traps and Spells being activated to waste your Spell Counters. Traps you want to include are cards like "Hidden Spellbook" to recycle Spell Cards and "Magician's Circle" to swarm the field with cards like "Dark Red Enchanter". As for Spells, they're the most important part of this Deck as most most card effects in this Deck use Spell Cards to gain Spell Counters, so the Spellbooks are very useful because they effectively utilize and recycle each other. "Spellbook of Power" and "Spellbook of Wisdom" are a very effective combination because when they're both used they give your cards two spell counters, an added 1000 ATK points and protection from any Traps your opponent may play. Optional cards to put in or cards to save for siding are "Strength of Prophecy" and "Endymion, the Master Magician"; "Strength" allows you to recycle "Spellbooks" in your Graveyard, while "Endymion" can be easily Summoned with an abundance of Spell Counters on his "Citadel".

+
* In a "Wicked God" Deck if you become unable to Summon them to the field you may ditch "The Wicked Avatar", "The Wicked Dreadroot" and "The Wicked Eraser" to ensure that "Montage Dragon" has high ATK while filling the Graveyard for "Dark Armed Dragon", "Dark Nephthys", "Dark Creator" and "Darklord Zerato".
 +

 +
* Summon "Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands" or "Senju of the Thousand Hands" to add high Level Ritual monsters to your hand.
 +

 +
* Make a Deck with Normal Monsters and the cards "Heart of the Underdog" and "Dark Factory of Mass Production" to have enough monsters to discard for "Montage Dragon".
 +

 +
* In order to avoid Dead Draws, try including high-Level monsters that can easily be Summoned alone, such as "Beast King Barbaros", "Fusilier Dragon, the Dual-Mode Beast", "Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight" and "Cyber Dragon".
 +

 +
* "Genesis Dragon" and "Herald of Creation" can be used to help Summon this card.
 +

 +
* Use this card to fill your Graveyard with high Level Dragons, and then use "Decoy Dragon" to Summon one of them. Cards like "Battle Mania" can force your opponent to attack.
 +

 +
* When "Montage Dragon" is on the field, beware of cards such as "Book of Moon" that can switch your "Montage Dragon" into face-down Defense Position.
 +

 +
* "Montage Dragon" is good in a "Sacred Beast" Deck especially if you have multiple copies and are unable to Summon them, as well as a "Gate Guardian" Deck, when you have no ability to Summon the pieces or the whole, it can easily have 7500 ATK.
 +

 +
* If you run "Montage Dragon" in a Plant-Type Deck, you can send 3 copies of "Phoenixian Cluster Amaryllis" to the Graveyard, it will have 7200 ATK.
 +

 +
* "Montage Dragon" works well with "Earthbound Immortals" and "Dark Armed Dragon", as you can send 2 "Earthbound Immortal" monsters and one other DARK card to the Graveyard, then Summon "Dark Armed Dragon" to potentially do 10000+ damage.
 +

 +
* The maximum ATK this card can obtain by its effect is 10,800, which can only be achieved by discarding 3 Level 12 monsters, such as "Meklord Astro Mekanikle" or "Malefic Truth Dragon".
 +

 +
* You can Synchro Summon "Black Rose Dragon" to the field and send it to the Graveyard to destroy all cards on the field and Special Summon "Montage Dragon" from your hand and attack your opponent directly for a high amount of damage.
 +

 +
* You can discard three Dragons to help power up "Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon" or "Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon".
 +
** This strategy is also useful with "Chaos Necromancer".
 +
* Discard 3 monsters to Special Summon this card, then Tribute it for "Great Maju Garzett". Since the ATK of "Montage Dragon" is undetermined, the ATK gained from the discarded monsters is counted as its original ATK, meaning that "Great Maju Garzett" will be able to gain double its ATK for a maximum of 21,600.
 +

 +
* This card can be a surprising trump card in a "Dragon Ruler" Deck. Simply discard three of the "Dragon Rulers" to Special Summon this card with a whopping 6300 ATK. Your Graveyard will now be set up for further "Dragon Ruler" plays.

Traditional Format
 +
* It is possible to create an OTK by using "Sangan" in combination with "Limit Reverse". Recycle "Sangan" to get 3 Level 10 monsters, like "Yubel" into your hand. You can then discard all 3 copies of "Yubel" to Special Summon "Montage Dragon" with a combined attack of 9000.
 +

 +
* You can use "Sangan" and "Witch of the Black Forest" to get "Yubel - Terror Incarnate" and "Yubel - The Ultimate Nightmare" which will give "Montage Dragon" at least a 3300 ATK.
 +

 +
* Use "Future Fusion", selecting "Five-Headed Dragon", and send 3 copies of "The White Stone of Legend" to the grave, then discard the 3 copies of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" that you got from their effects, to Summon this card with 7200 ATK. Since "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" is a Normal Monster", you can also use the certain cards from Advanced Format advises.
 +

 +
* A good card to send is "Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon" since it's Level 10. It would make the ATK of "Montage Dragon" 9000, if along with other Level 10 monsters. If you use "Red-Eyes Wyvern" in your Deck, you can Special Summon them from the Graveyard later.
 +

 +
* Use "Future Fusion" or "Painful Choice" to send 3 copies of "The White Stone of Legend" to the Graveyard, giving you 3 copies of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to your hand to discard for this card and give it 7200 ATK.
 +
** If your opponent decides to give you 1 copy of "The White Stone of Legend" to your hand for the effect of "Painful Choice", discard it by "Cards of Consonance" to draw 2 cards and still get your "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to your Hand.
 +
** This card actually works quite well in a "Blue-Eyes Disaster Dragon" Deck, as you will get a lot of hand advantage and high Level monsters as well as being able to discard "Red-Eyes Wyvern" and "Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon" for another Summon, as long as you don't Normal Summon/Set, which you don't really need to do as it will have over 4200 ATK, or discard "White Stone of Legend" to search out "Blue-Eyes White Dragon".
 +
** You can use "Shooting Star Bow - Ceal" and "Mage Power" to go for an OTK.
 +
** Using the Spell Card "Megamorph" with this card while you have less Life Points, than your opponent to double your ATK, and with three high Level cards a one hit kill can be possible.

Latest revision as of 01:02, 20 April 2024

  • Use this card in an "Earthbound Immortal" Deck, to discard 3 copies of "Earthbound Immortal", this way this card will have 9000 ATK, then use "Lightning Vortex" and attack for a possible OTK.
    • You can use "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon any "Earthbound Immortal" you send to the Graveyard through this card's effect (be sure to have a Field Spell on the field before doing so).
