A card's Status is a term showing how many copies of that card are allowed in a player's Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck combined. Statuses are announced biannually in the Forbidden and Limited lists.
The following Statuses are used in the lists:
- Unlimited - a card is allowed the maximum number of copies, three.
- Semi-Limited - a card is allowed only two copies.
- Limited - a card is allowed only one copy.
- Forbidden - no copies of a card are allowed. This Status is only used in the Advanced Format; Forbidden cards are changed to Limited in the Traditional Format.
- Illegal - no copies of a card are allowed. Unlike the above Statuses, this is indicated on the card with the Limitation Text "This card cannot be used in a Duel." in the place of its Card Number, and Illegal cards may not be used in either the Advanced or Traditional Formats.
- Not Legal - This is normally used for cards that cannot be included in a Deck.
- Not Yet Released - used for cards that have not been released yet; unreleased cards are considered Illegal.
- Not Yet Legal - used for cards leaked before their official release date; these cards are considered Illegal.
