Flame Swordsman (ほのおけん Honō no Kenshi or えんけん En no Kenshi) is a series of FIRE Warrior monsters used by Joey Wheeler in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. The series consists of the original "Flame Swordsman" and cards that mention it.

While "Dark Flare Knight", the first card to ever mention "Flame Swordsman", was released all the way back in Power of the Guardian/Dark Revelation Volume 1, the first cards with effects that rely on cards that mention "Flame Swordsman" were not released until more than 20 years later in Maze of Millennia.

Design

The various variants of "Flame Swordsman" generally depict the eponymous blade-wielder and his burning blade, wearing his iconic blue-and-crimson fantasy-themed garb. The different Monster Cards nonetheless depict the swordsman with different physical frames, styles of ornamentation on his clothes, and wielding his weapon in different ways.

Playing style

The playing style of the series has largely grown out of the properties and depiction of the original "Flame Swordsman" in the aforementioned anime. Though a Fusion Monster in the dub and OCG/TCG, it was often portrayed as being played as if it was a Main Deck monster, which gives rise to the strategy of being able to summon "Flame Swordsman" and its evolutions out from the Extra Deck in various unorthodox ways. Its associations with the Equip Spell "Salamandra" have influenced the broader strategy to utilize equip cards, especially through the "Salamandra" archetype. It's status as the most notable of the original wave of FIRE Warriors leads to the inclusion of generic support for that Attribute-Monster Type combination. Lastly, its Deck Master ability to manipulate ATK-values leads to the inclusion of this aspect in the effects of the card series.
