Quill, Pidgetrap

Pidgetrap Quill, known as Hatrap Kayama (やま ハトラップ Kayama Hatorappu) in the Japanese version, is a character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS anime. He is a pigeon and Schubel Quill's adoptive brother. He is considered a Tactical Advisor of Goha #6 Elementary's Heavy Cavalry Duel Club, and constantly accompanies Schubel.

Design

Appearance

Profile view of Pidgetrap.

Pidgetrap is a rock pigeon, one of the most common and widespread species of pigeon, with largely white feathers across his body, blue feathers around his neck, and green feathers on his head, with orange eyes. He wears a small capsule on his ankle, allowing him to transport messages. As one of The☆Heavy Cavalry Rangers, Pidgetrap wears a small gold mask over his head that resembles a Roman helmet, with red lenses set in black sections.

Personality

Pidgetrap deeply cares for Schubel, though they are prone to arguing when Pidgetrap feels Schubel has not conveyed his strategy correctly. Like Schubel, Pidgetrap enjoys tricking and pranking people, though he is easily panicked when events turn against him. Pidgetrap demonstrates significant arrogance due to his ability to Duel, even insisting in a bout of anger that he does not need Schubel.

Etymology

Pidgetrap's Japanese name "Hatrap" is a portmanteau of the Japanese word for "pigeon" (鳩 hato) and the word "trap" (トラップ torappu), a direct reference to the high number of Trap Cards he and Schubel use in their Deck.

Its name may be a reference to clay pigeon shooting, a sport in which flying clay targets, known as "pigeons", are launched by a machine known as a "trap".

Biography

History

Pidgetrap and his family raised Schubel Quill from boyhood. One snowy day they were delivering for their family business CooQuill Expres in the North Area, but they were caught in a snowfall under some trees and buried in the snow.[1] As they began to succumb to the cold, though Schubel reassured Pidgetrap that they would always be together. Fortunately they were rescued by Asana Mutsuba and her great-grandfather, and they were rushed to the hospital due to their weak condition.[1][3]

Goha #6 Elementary

Under Asana's orders, Schubel sent Luke an invitation to the Dark Rush Duel Tournament through Pidgetrap.[4][5]

Pidgetrap accompanied Schubel, Asana and Galian Townsend to the old Goha #6 Elementary campus, where they discovered many Goha 6th students led by Janko participating in the Dark Rush Duel Tournament, in addition to Yuga Ohdo and his friends. Yuga challenged Asana to a Rush Duel to let the Goha 6th students Rush Duel freely, telling Yuga to use honorifics to address Asana until Asana snapped that Yuga could address her how he wanted. Pidgetrap, Schubel and Galian flanked Asana during the Duel, and Pidgetrap's presence eventually caused Luke to recall that he had delivered the entry form for the Dark Rush Duel Tournament to him. Asana defeated Yuga by Maximum Summoning, forcing him and his friends to transfer to Goha #6 Elementary.[5]

Pidgetrap and Schubel accompanied Galian to face off against the newly transferred students when they expressed their desire to leave. Gavin Sogetsu challenged Galian to a Duel and defeated him, though Asana instead sent Yuga and his friends to the Abandoned Dorm.[6] Pidgetrap was present with Schubel when he learned that Yuga and his friends had escaped into the mines.[7] Pidgetrap and Schubel went to the Heavy Cavalry Colosseum to lie in wait for Yuga and his friends, and Schubel practiced fending off Pidgetrap, though as always he was eventually disarmed. Galian then arrived, having dug all the way to the Heavy Cavalry Colosseum to help defend Asana again, but when Yuga and his friends arrived, Galian passed out from exhaustion and Rayne took his place, Dueling her twin Rino. Rino ended the Duel in a DRAW, so Schubel insisted on another Duel.[8]

Luke accepted the challenge, though he was shocked when Schubel revealed Pidgetrap had been the one tricking them the entire time and would be Dueling Luke. Pidgetrap instructed Schubel throughout the Duel, Setting three Trap Cards on his first turn and constantly pranking Luke. Luke Tribute Summoned "Shock Dragon" and "Ancient Arise Dragon", reducing the ATK of one of Pidgetrap's monsters to zero, and though Pidgetrap was able to destroy "Ancient Arise Dragon" in a Double KO, he was unimpressed that "Shock Dragon" managed to inflict a lot of damage to him and kicked Schubel for it, despite Schubel conveying his moves accurately. He Tribute Summoned "Night Vision the Phantom Pigeon" on his next turn and destroyed "Shock Dragon", and his Traps continued to give Luke pause. However, when Luke Summoned a monster and triggered Pidgetrap's "Clowning Cookoo Clock" Trap, Schubel made the action on his own and Special Summoned another "Night Dove" in Attack Position despite Pidgetrap's protests. To Pidgetrap's shock, Luke snapped out of his depression and began enjoying the anticipation of Pidgetrap's Traps, Tribute Summoning "Illusion Strike Dragon Miragias" and reducing the ATK of both of Pidgetrap's "Night Visions". Although Pidgetrap tried to stop Luke by switching his monsters to Defense Position with his "Brocoohearted Pigeon" Traps, Luke was able to re-Summon "Miragias" and activate its effect again, reducing the ATK of Pidgetrap's "Night Visions" to zero. The effect almost blew Pidgetrap away, though despite Schubel saving him Pidgetrap kicked him off HA10 and claimed he wished they had parted ways when Asana found them. Luke then defeated Pidgetrap, but as the attack blew the pigeon away he was saved again by Schubel, who reminded him of their promise to always be together.[3]

Pidgetrap, Schubel, and Galian later accompanied Asana to the cache of prototype Duel Disks buried in the mines, where they found Yuga and his friends. Pidgetrap and Schubel supported Asana throughout her second Rush Duel with Yuga, calling her successful moves. Unbeknownst to them, Yuga had successfully scavenged three Duel ID cards from the prototype Duel Disks and added them to his Deck to recreate his own Maximum Monster, "Supreme Machine Magnum Overlord", which clashed with Asana's "Wyrm Excavator the Heavy Cavalry Draco", but as the monsters battled, Pidgetrap noticed that Asana's cards were beginning to decay and alerted Asana to the development.[9] After the two Maximums destroyed one another, R6 continued to deteriorate and Pidgetrap aided in stabilizing it by firing a feather into its gears and physically holding it up. Yuga eventually defeated Asana, and Pidgetrap helped Schubel and Galian catch her. After the Duel Yuga revealed that R0, the Mutsuba Style Mobile Duel Device, have been modified by Asana's family, causing the Hevy Cavalry Duel Club to accept both Rush Duels and the idea of modification in general.[10]

Team Battle Royal

Luke called Asana to ask permission to dig in her mine, so Pidgetrap and Schubel accompanied Asana and Galian to the Abandoned Dorm to meet with Luke and Tracker. Luke told them about the Goha Rush Duel Team Battle Royal, though he admitted that Yuga wasn't participating; Pidgetrap wondered if Yuga was intimidated by the strong Duelists who would likely be taking part, but Luke fiercely denied this, though he wasn't sure what the real reason was. To their surprise they found the mineshaft covered in lights that made it look like outer space, and encountered Goha #5 Elementary's Duelstronauts, who claimed to be looking for Maximum Monsters after seeing Asana create "Wyrm Excavator the Heavy Cavalry Draco". Their leader, Booster Page, challenged Asana to a Rush Duel for the right to Duel in the mine, much to Pidgetrap's anger, but Asana agreed on the condition Booster Duel Luke instead, confiding to Schubel and Galian that she was curious as to whether Luke would find himself in the Duel. Booster gave Luke some trouble, but Luke was eventually able to defeat him. After the Duel, Romin and Gavin arrived, and Asana gave Luke permission to excavate in the mine, with Luke telling the Duelstronauts they could join them.[11]

Schubel, Galian and Asana were going to represent the Heavy Cavalry Duel Club in the Goha Rush Duel Team Battle Royal, but Asana called in sick on the day of the registration and urged them to compete, suggesting they substitute Pidgetrap for her.[12] She also gave Schubel and Galian a blank Duel ID card that she had found in her mine to give to Yuga, having intended to give it to him in person.[13] Unfortunately the tournament overseers refused to allow Pidgetrap to enter on the grounds of being an animal, and Schubel's passionate defense of his friend attracted the attention of Yuga, Luke, Romin and Gavin. Luke suggested that Yuga could join their team, though Yuga protested that he only planned on spectating. Otes then approached Yuga and challenged him to a Rush Duel, and Pidgetrap flew across the path to perch on him, causing everyone present to realize that Otes was real instead of a hologram. Otes quickly pushed Yuga into a corner and cautioned him about letting Rush Dueling become as strict as Goha Dueling. Yuga made a comeback, but Pidgetrap believed he had lost when Otes returned all the monsters in Yuga's Graveyard to his Deck, preventing him from increasing the ATK of "Sevens Road Magician" with its effect. Fortunately Yuga was able to increase the ATK of "Sevens Road Magician" with "Sevens Twin Burst" and defeat Otes. After the Duel, Yuga agreed to join Schubel and Galian's team for the tournament in Pidgetrap's place, and after Otes was arrested, Yuga joined them in heading to the registration.[12]

Pidgetrap, Schubel, Galian and Yuga watched the Goha President's opening speech and Roa Kassidy, Tyler Getz and Toombs's interruption of it. Roa challenged the President to a Rush Duel over the right to talk to Otes and eventually won. After the Duel, Caterpillio contacted Schubel and Galian and requested backup at Asana's side. Though they regretted having to withdraw from the tournament and leave Yuga behind, they nevertheless made the decision to do so and apologized to Yuga, who reassured them that it was fine and urged them to go to Asana.[14] Before they left, they gave Yuga the blank Duel ID card from Asana.[13]

Pidgetrap, Schubel and Galian found Asana and Caterpillio waiting for them outside the Abandoned Dorm, where the mineshaft to Maximum Mountain had been forced open. Pidgetrap was overjoyed when Asana told him she was happy they'd come to her and they ventured into the mine to find Goha 66 excavating there. They confronted him over his purpose, and he claimed that elementary schoolers would never understand what salarymen thought, insulting them and their Heavy Cavalry. Tiger then arrived to assist them against Goha 66, blowing Pidgetrap away and into a Goha 66 member after Asana called her by her first name.[15] Pidgetrap, Galian, Caterpillio and Tiger defeated all the members of Goha 66, but then Tiger challenged Asana to a Duel. Before they could clash, Luke, Romin, Gavin, Saburamen, Sushiko Maki and Briscoe arrived with a captured Kaizo, who had joined Goha 66 and Luke used Kaizo's confession switch to force him to reveal Goha 66's plan; to take over Goha Enterprises and the Dueling world by gaining control of the main Dueling server buried beneath Maximum Mountain.[16] Pidgetrap delivered a message from Luke to Yuga, Roa and Nail Saionji outside the Ramen Hut, explaining Goha 66's goals to Yuga. He returned in the middle of the Duel between Asana and Tiger, interrupting the Duel with Schubel after they realized that Asana's rescue of them had inadvertently ended their childhood friendship and explaining what had really happened, prompting Asana to apologize and Tiger to forgive her. Pidgetrap and Schubel then watched as Asana defeated Tiger, but when Tiger shouted Luke away after the Duel, she shattered a wall that revealed the supposed main server. However, the server proved to be too small and Goha 66 crumpled in disappointment with a note reading "My best, most awesome plan to take over Goha", which Pidgetrap delivered to Yuga, Roa and Nail at the end of the day.[1]

Pidgetrap, Schubel, Galian, Asana, Zomoyji and Tiger all attended the finals of the Goha Rush Duel Team Battle Royal the next day at Goha Stadium, watching Romin's victory against Roa and Gavin's Duel against Nail, where they were shocked by his new "DJ G" persona. Faced with "Yggdrago the Sky Emperor", Gavin eventually returned to his normal persona after a power outage in the stadium and forced a DRAW, leaving Yuga and Luke to have a final Duel.[17][18]

Pidgetrap and Schubel watched Yuga and Luke's Rush Duel. Pidgetrap was surprised by Yuga's nervous reaction on his first turn, and after Yuga only Summoned "Sevens Road Magician" after changing his hand out with "Amazing Dealer", Pidgetrap agreed that Yuga had started with a bad hand. After Yuga Maximum Summoned "Hyper Engine Vast Vulcan" the power in the stadium began to fail again, revealed to be due to the Goha Duel Server being hacked, and Pidgetrap witnessed the revelation of the Goha Duel Server on the moon and the Rush Duel Program contained within, under attack by Goha Enterprises Drones. Asana realized that the Drones were uninstalling it and had been all tournament, likely under the orders of Otes.[19] After a power spike was detected beneath Goha Stadium, Pidgetrap, Schubel, Galian, and Caterpillio headed into the tunnels to destroy the device responsible, Caterpillio breaking down the doors with his tools while Galian destroyed the Relic that Otes had apparently been using to hack the server with GG03 and reported back to Tiger and Asana, though the uninstallation continued. Despite knowing their Duel would complete the uninstallation, Yuga and Luke continued to Duel. Pidgetrap and Schubel returned to the surface in time to witness the final turn, which ended in Luke's victory and the uninstallation of Rush Dueling, but Yuga and Nail were able to reinstall the program and install it in the Super Rush Robot to protect it from another attack. Pidgetrap then watched Luke's coronation as King of Duels.[20]

Goha 6 Siblings

The true Goha Presidents, the Goha Six, returned to Earth, evicted the current President, Mimi Imimi, and challenged Yuga and his friends to Rush Duels with the Super Rush Robot held hostage by Forcersizers that would shake it apart unless Yuga defeated the six siblings.[21] Pidgetrap, Galian and Caterpillio all offered their Duel ID cards to Asana to allow her to recreate "Wyrm Excavator the Heavy Cavalry Draco", Schubel conveying Pidgetrap's offer, but she declined their offer and asked to use their ace monsters in her Deck instead; Pidgetrap had Schubel give her his "Night Vision the Phantom Pigeon".[22]

Asana learned Tiger was training at Maximum Mountain and she called the Rush Duel Club to meet with her, Pidgetrap, Schubel, Galian and Caterpillio before taking them to the tiger-shaped outcrop that Tiger had been relentlessly carved. After Tiger fell from the outcrop in exhaustion and Asana caught her, Pidgetrap learned that Tiger had been training due to her defeat in a Rush Duel by her brother, who had joined Yuo Goha. Yuo then arrived in Star Six with Nail for the day's Duel, which Asana accepted in Tiger's place. Nail Maximum Summoned "Yggdrago the Sky Emperor" on his first turn and Asana opposed it by backing up "Constructor Wyrm Buildragon" with her friends' ace monsters, including Pidgetrap's "Night Vision the Phantom Pigeon", though Nail was able to avoid Asana's attack. Nail Maximum Summoned "Yggdrago" again on his next turn and Asana defended with "Night Vision", "Shield Boring Kong" and "Beast Drive Mega Elephant", but Nail was able to break though them all by reusing the Maximum effects of "Yggdrago". Fortunately Asana was able to survive by reducing the ATK of "Yggdrago" and on her next turn she Summoned a new ace, "Constructor Sky Wyrm Gantry Dragon", reviving "Buildragon" and "Constructor Demolisher Wyrm Drake Crush". Once again she used her friends' aces to increase the ATK of her "Drake Crush" and reduce the ATK of "Yggdrago", eventually defeating Nail.[22]

Nail resigned from Goha Enterprises after the Duel and left with Seatbastian, and Yuga challenged The Lukeman to a final Rush Duel.[22] To Pidgetrap's surprise, after The Lukeman donned a costume that he referred to as his "Ultimate Form", Yuga donned his own costume, "Yuga the Destructor". The rest of the Goha Six and Mimi then arrived and explained what was going on: The Lukeman was an electronic lifeform created when Tiger had tried to fax The Lukeman manga Luke had written as a child and had struck it in frustration, causing a burst of energy that became sentient and created the "Fusion" cards from Program storage cards in the remains of Goha satellites destroyed by Nail eight years previously. The Lukeman desired to become one with Luke, which was why it had sought him out, and Yuga wanted to help The Lukeman, which was the reason behind his costume as "Yuga the Destructor". Pidgetrap reacted to these revelations with increasing incredulity and was so distracted by the revelations he didn't notice The Lukeman had Fusion Summoned "Hyperstrike Dragon Dragiastar F" and almost defeated Yuga the Destructor, though Yuga was able to barely survive. Yuga then assumed a new guise, "The Yugaman", claiming to be an ally of The Lukeman, and everyone else provided with costumes as well.[23] Pidgetrap, Schubel, Galian and Caterpillio took on the personas of "The☆Heavy Cavalry Rangers" alongside "The Princess Asana", and joined the others in convincing The Lukeman they weren't his enemies, but having "The Rockin' Romin" be captured by the "Goha Aliens" played by the Goha Six to force the Rush Duel to continue. After The Yugaman destroyed "Dragiastar F" with the effect of "Ultimate Flag Mech Ace Breaker", The Lukeman returned "Fusion" to his Deck on his next turn with "Peace Dragon" while also increasing both players' LP, prompting an enraged Yuo to ask if The Lukeman was Dueling seriously. The Lukeman re-drew "Fusion" and Fusion Summoned "Full Moon Dragon Umbralancer F", reviving "Dragiastar F" and almost defeating The Yugaman. On his next turn The Yugaman revived "Sevens Road Magician", but The Lukeman returned all the monsters in his Graveyard to his Deck to prevent him using the effect of "Sevens Road Magician". The Yugaman tried to counter by drawing a new card with "1/Infinity", which forced both players to draw and would damage Yuga if he didn't draw the same card as The Lukeman. However The Lukeman drew "Fusion", which Yuga didn't have in his Deck. A meteor then entered Earth's atmosphere and plunged towards Yuga, but Yuga was able to block the meteor with his Duel Disk and add the "Fusion" within to his Deck. Yuga Fusion Summoned "Sevens Paladin", which could gain ATK from monsters in both Graveyards, and successfully sent the EARTH monster he needed to the Graveyard to activate the effect of "Sevens Paladin", allowing him to destroy both of The Lukeman's Fusion Monsters and defeat him.[24]

As The Lukeman thanked Yuga, Yuo tried to destroy the Super Rush Robot in Star Six, but was stopped when Kaizo, who had been caught in the Goha Meteor Shower, crashed into Star Six and detonated Romin's Prima Guitarna Curry, crashing Star Six. Yuo released the Super Rush Robot, and The Lukeman released Luke and left for outer space, promising to return if they needed him. Mimi then claimed Swirls to be the sixth of the Goha Six, though she was proven wrong when the sixth Goha Six's badge didn't react to him. Yuga then offered to join Goha Enterprises as the Goha Six had initially asked, in exchange for Yuo retaining his position and reinstating the rest of the Goha Siblings.[24]

Deck

Pidgetrap does not own a Deck, instead using Schubel Quill's Winged Beast Deck and telling him which cards to play. The Deck contains a high number of Trap Cards that primarily trigger when the opponent either Summons a monster or attacks, and weaken the opponent's monsters. A high number of Trap Cards in his Graveyard also increases the ATK of his ace monster; "Night Vision the Phantom Pigeon".
