Union Monsters can be recognized by the fact that, where on a normal Effect Monster it would read 'Effect', Union Monsters have 'Union'. Cards such as Dark Necrofear or Kiseitai act as equip cards but do not have the text designating them Union Monsters.

Union Monsters, when used with a Compatible Monster, can function like an Equip Spell Card (Or just an Equip Card), and thus become vulnerable to cards that destroy Spell Cards, such as Mystical Space Typhoon. When in this mode, they can grant special abilities to the host monster, such as more ATK/DEF.

It is worth noting that all Union monsters protect their equipped monster by redirecting the attack to themselves, so they are destroyed instead. The host is generally a bit more powerful than the Union monster, so this can be useful at times.

The Union Monster can also 'detach' from its host monster, and will then be Special Summoned to the field in face-up Attack Position. You can only 'detach' or 'attach' once per turn.

However, all of these fusions (with the exception of Dark Blade the Dragon Knight) use an unorthodox method of fusing, in that they remove from play the Fusion-Material Monsters on your side of the field, to Special Summon the Fusion Monster in question, and 'Polymerization' is not used. This Special Summon is not considered a Fusion Summon.

(Cards that the union monster can equip to will be listed in parentheses after the name of each monster)

And here is a list of the support cards they use:
