There are many occasions in which a card, in the anime, may contradict its lore in the anime. These are usually due to errors on the writers' part.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL

  • Infected Mail - Once per turn: You can target 1 Level 4 or lower monster you control; it can attack your opponent directly this turn. Destroy it at the end of the Battle Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore is the same as its OCG lore, which sends the targeted monster to the Graveyard, not destroy it. Despite this, the effect of "Cracking" activated after this card's second effect resolved.
  • Take a Chance - Once per turn: You can roll a six-sided die, and if the result is 6, multiply your Life Points by 5. Otherwise, your Life Points become the same amount you had when this card was activated, you cannot activate this effect again, the effects of all further die results are negated until your next turn, also you take 1000 damage during each of your Standby Phases.
    • Reason for contradiction: The effect of negating further die results should the controller get a result other than 6 is not mentioned in the written lore, but this prevented Charlie from activating the effect of "Number 7: Lucky Straight" (which even if he could use it in the last two turns of the Duel wouldn't have helped him since the fortune giving ability of "Lucky Straight" had disappeared at that point).
  • Number 25: Force Focus - Cannot be destroyed by battle except with "Number" monsters. When your opponent activates an Effect Monster's effect: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to target that monster; negate that target's effect(s) this turn. When this card battles with an opponent's monster, you may detach one Xyz Material from this card. If you do, the monster that this card is battling has its effects negated this turn.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card was able to negate the effect of "Gogogo Golem" which is a Continuous Effect in both the anime and the real card game. This card's effect was also hinted in the anime to be able to negate the effect of "Number 39: Utopia".
  • Impenetrable Attack - During the Battle Phase, activate 1 or both of these effects.
    ● Target 1 monster on the field; it cannot be destroyed by battle or by card effects during this Battle Phase.
    ● You take no battle damage during this Battle Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore states you can only activate one of these effects, yet Yuma, in episode 42, was able to use both to save "Photon Crusher" from being destroyed in battle by "Number 15: Gimmick Puppet Giant Grinder" (using the battle damage effect of this card was redundant though since the battling monsters had equal ATK at that point).
  • Photon World - When a "Photon" monster is Normal or Special Summoned: You can inflict damage to all players that do not control a "Photon" monster equal to the Summoned monster's Level × 100.
    • Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's written anime lore (which is a mandatory effect), this card's effect did not activate when "Photon Caesar" was summoned, which would have made Yuma lose the Duel.
  • Rocket Arrow Express - Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) by controlling no cards. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you Special Summon this card. You cannot Set cards. During each of your Standby Phases, destroy this card unless you send 5 cards from your hand to the Graveyard. If this card battles, destroy this card unless you send 5 cards from your hand to the Graveyard.
    • Reason for contradiction: The final effect of this card occurred in episode 52, despite the written anime lore of this card in episode 29 not having such an effect.
  • Heroic Challenger - War Hammer - When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard: Destroy all Equip Cards equipped to this card, then you can equip the destroyed monster to this card as an Equip Card. This card gains ATK equal to the ATK of a monster equipped to it.
    • Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's written anime lore (which states it can't be Special Summoned), Nistro was able to Special Summon this card during the Duel Coaster part of the World Duel Carnival finals.
  • Bubble Bringer - When an opponent's monster declares a direct attack: You can activate this card; negate that attack. You can send this face-up card to the Graveyard to target 1 Level 3 or lower WATER monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target. The Special Summoned monster is treated as 2 Xyz Materials for an Xyz Summon.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore doesn't say the summoned monster can be treated as two monsters for an Xyz Summon, but this did occur when this card was used to revive "Tripod Fish".
  • Traplin - You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by destroying 1 Continuous Trap Card you control.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore states that the Trap Card used for this card's summon is Tributed, which meant Yuma's thought of using "Traplin" on "Rivals Unite" wouldn't have returned "Number C32: Shark Drake Veiss" to Shark's side since "Rivals Unite" state it only returns the targeted monster to its owner's side of the field if "Rivals Unite" is destroyed.
  • Heraldry Change - During damage calculation, when an opponent's monster attacks, Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Heraldic" monster from your hand, then reduce any Battle Damage you take from this battle by the Level of that monster times 1000, then end the Battle Phase.
Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore states it must be activated when the controller's monster battles an opponent's monster, yet Vetrix was able to activate this card in response to "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" attacking directly.
  • Number 8: Heraldic King Genom-Heritage - Cannot be destroyed by battle except with "Number" monsters. During either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then activate 1 of these effects.
    ● Until the End Phase of this turn, if this card battles one of your opponent's monsters, that monster's ATK becomes 0 and this card's ATK becomes that monster's original ATK.
    ● Until the End Phase of this turn, negate the effects of 1 face-up Attack Position monster your opponent controls and this card gains that monster's effects.
    ● When an opponent's monster declares an attack, that monster's name becomes "Unknown" and this card gains that monster's original name.
    • Reason for contradiction: One of the written effects that can be selected for the second effect of "Heraldic King Genom-Heritage" would not have helped Vetrix in destroying "Number 9: Dyson Sphere" as he explicitly stated during his Duel against Kite that this effect negates the effects of "Dyson Sphere" and grants "Genom-Heritage" those effects until the End Phase.
  • Half Unbreak (episodes 6 to episode 82) - Target 1 monster on the field; that monster cannot be destroyed by battle, also halve any battle damage either player takes from battles involving that monster. These changes last until the end of this turn.
    • Reason for contradiction - The initial anime lore states it targets one monster on the controller's field, but in episode 70, Yuma used it on "Number 92: Heart-eartH Dragon", which belonged to Dr. Faker.
  • Gamusharush - When a monster you control battles an opponent's monster: Reduce the ATK of the monster you control to 0, and if you do, inflict 600 damage to your opponent. The monster you control cannot be destroyed by this battle.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore doesn't say that the monster affected by this card can't be destroyed in battle, however "Utopia Ray" wasn't destroyed in battle when it battled "Number 92: Heart-eartH Dragon" (who has the effect of not being destroyed in battle in general) and Yuma activates this card.
  • Diamond Dust - Normal Trap Card
    • This card in the anime is a Continuous Trap Card, however it was used as a Normal Trap Card as after this card resolves, it is not destroyed by the effect of "CXyz Battleship Cherry Blossom" and thus does not count towards the damage effect of "Battleship Cherry Blossom".
  • Battlin' Boxer Lead Yoke - If this card battles, you can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card. This card cannot be destroyed by this battle, it gains 800 ATK during damage calculation. When an Xyz Material is decreased by an effect other than this card's: It gains 800 ATK.
    • The written anime lore states that this card's second effect only activates when an Xyz Material is detached by this card's first effect, which contradicts on how Alito was able to increase this card's ATK by detaching an Xyz Material from this card via another card in his first two Duels against Yuma. Furthermore, the written lore should have made this card gain 1600 ATK when Alito activates its first effect in episode 85, but it did not do this.
  • Sharkify - The equipped monster is also treated as a "Shark" monster and gains 400 ATK.
    • Reason for contradiction: "Black Ray Lancer" gained 400 ATK when it was equipped with this card despite the lore of "Sharkify" saying the equipped monster gains 300 ATK.
  • Heroic Champion - Excalibur - You can only declare an attack if your Life Points are equal to or lower than 500. When this card battles: You can detach all Xyz Materials from this card; this card's current ATK is doubled, until the end of the Battle Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: Nistro previously stated that this card's original ATK is doubled, however in Yuma's third Duel against Shark, the current ATK of this card (which was 4000) was doubled, instead of its original ATK (which was 2000).
  • Muzurhythm the String Djinn - If this card battles an Xyz Monster: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; double this card's ATK until the End Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore does not say that it expires during the controller's End Phase, but this occurred during Yuma's Duel against Orbital 7.
  • Achaacha Archer - When this card is summoned: Inflict 500 damage to your opponent.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's effect activated when this card was Special Summoned through the effect of "Crane Crane", which should have not occurred.
  • Umbral Horror Ghoul - You can make this card's ATK 0, and if you do, Special Summon any "Umbral Horror" monsters with 0 ATK from your hand.
    • The written anime lore of this card states, it can only Special Summon one "Umbral Horror" monster, but the fake Vector, in episode 96, was able to use this card's effect to Special Summon two "Umbral Horror Will o' the Wisps".
  • Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade - Cannot be destroyed by battle except with "Number" monsters. When this card is Special Summoned: You can target 1 Spell/Trap Card your opponent controls; destroy that target. If this card is Xyz Summoned by Ranking Up "Number 104: Masquerade", it gains these effects.
    ● During either player's turn, you can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; send 1 random card from your opponent's hand to the Graveyard, and if you do, halve your opponent's Life Points.
    ● During either player's turn, when an opponent's monster effect is activated: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the activation, then send 1 random card from your opponent's hand to the Graveyard, and if you do, halve your opponent's Life Points.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore states it only activates when an opponent's Effect Monster's effect activates, but Vector was able to activate this card's effect twice without this condition occurring.
  • Dododo Witch - Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. If you control a Set card in your Spell & Trap Card Zone, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand).
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore states that the player can't activate any Spell or Trap Cards during the turn it is summoned. However Ponta was able to activate "Monster Reborn" during the turn this card was summoned.
  • Gorgonic Pile - Increase the Levels of all Rock-Type monsters you control by the number of "Gorgonic" monsters you currently control until the End Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore states it targets only one monster, however both "Gorgonic Golem" and "Gorgonic Gargoyle" were affected by this card's effect.
  • Cicada Illusion - Activate this card by targeting 1 face-up Insect-Type monster you control in Defense Position. It cannot be destroyed by battle during the turn this card is activated. When its battle position is changed: It gains ATK equal to its DEF. When it leaves the field, destroy this card.
  • Cascade Barrier - When a monster you control is targeted by a card effect: Target the targeted monster; it is not destroyed by the effect targeting it, also its ATK becomes 0 until the End Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore should have made "Number 73: Abyss Splash" immune to destruction by card effects until it was removed from the field, however Chironex was able to activate the effect of "Kragen Spawn" and destroy "Abyss Splash" after this card's effect resolved.
  • Disaster Conspiracy - If a monster you control that your opponent owns is destroyed by battle with an opponent's monster, and you take 1000 or more battle damage from that battle: Send all monsters that have more ATK than the destroyed monster from your opponent's field and Deck to the Graveyard.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore didn't say the opponent's monsters on the field have to be sent to the Graveyard, however Shark's "Silent Anglers" and "Spear Shark" are sent to the Graveyard despite not being in his Deck at the timing.
  • Rank Wall - When an opponent's Xyz Monster attacks and you control an Xyz monster with a Rank that is higher than your opponent's monster: Negate the attack, and if you do, end the Battle Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore says that "Rank Wall" can only be activated when an opponent's Xyz monster attacks an Xyz monster that has a higher Rank than the attacking monster, however Eliphas activated this card in response to "Number C39: Utopia Ray Victory" attacking directly via "Stealth Strike".
  • Number C39: Utopia Ray Victory - Cannot be destroyed by battle except with a "Number" monster. If this card was Xyz Summoned by Ranking Up "Number 39: Utopia", it gains this effect.
    ● During either player's Battle Phase, when this card battles an opponent's monster: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate that opponent's face-up monster's effects that battled, also this card gains ATK equal to that opponent's monster's ATK, until the End Phase.
    ● When this card attacks (except through a direct attack), your opponent cannot activate any Spell/Trap Cards.
    • Reason for contradiction: Both the anime version and the real version say that it can prevent your opponent from activating Spell and Trap cards when it attacks, however Elpihas was able to activate "Rank Wall" in response to this card attacking directly via "Stealth Strike".
  • Infection Medium - Activate only if a Fiend-Type Xyz Monster under your control was destroyed this turn. Destroy all monsters you control, and if you do, Special Summon 5 "Infection Bug Tokens" (Fiend-Type/DARK/Level 1/ATK 300/DEF 300). (You can reduce to 0 any battle damage either player takes from battles involving these Tokens.) You cannot Normal Summon monsters from your hand. When an Infection Bug Token is destroyed: You can destroy 1 monster your opponent controls, and if you do, inflict 300 damage to your opponent.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore states the last effect activates when the card itself is destroyed, but Mr. Heartland was able to activate the last effect of this card when "Number 39: Utopia" destroyed an Infection Bug Token in battle.
  • Infection Extension - Activate only if you did not Normal Summon this turn. Special Summon 1 "Infection Bug Token" (Fiend-Type/DARK/Level 1/ATK 300/DEF 300). (You can reduce to 0 any battle damage either player takes from battles involving that Token.) Your opponent can only Normal or Special Summon monsters in face-up Attack Position. When an Infection Bug Token is destroyed: You can destroy 1 monster your opponent controls, and if you do, inflict 300 damage to your opponent.
    • Reason for contradiction: Same reason as "Infection Medium" as Mr. Heartland warned Yuma about this on the second to last turn of the Duel.
  • Numeron Chaos Ritual - If a "Number C1: Numeron Chaos Gate Shunya" under your control was destroyed this turn: Treat 1 "Numeron Network" and 4 "Number" monsters in your Graveyard and/or Banished Zone as Level 12 monsters and Xyz Summon 1 Xyz Monster using those 5 monsters only.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore states that this card can only use "Numeron Network" and "Number" monsters in your Graveyard, but Don Thousand was able to use the Numeron Gate Numbers that were in his Banished Zone through this card.
  • Number 39: Utopia Roots - Cannot be destroyed by battle except with "Number" monsters. If this card battles an opponent's face-up Xyz Monster: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then attach it from the Graveyard to that opponent's monster as an Xyz Material; you may negate the attack, also, until the End Phase of this turn, this card's ATK becomes equal to the difference in Ranks between this card and that opponent's face-up Xyz Monster × 100, multiplied by the number of Xyz Materials currently attached to a monster your opponent controls.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime effect states it must negate the attack made. If that had happened, Yuma wouldn't have been able to activate the second effect of "Number F0: Utopic Future" since that effect only activates at the end of the Damage Step (the Damage Step does not occur if the attack was negated).
