Yu-Gi-Oh! (遊☆戯☆王, Yūgiō) is a film produced by Toei Animation, based on the anime series also produced by them.

Plot

A boy named Shougo Aoyama is too timid to duel, even after obtaining a powerful rare card, "Red-Eyes Black Dragon". Seto Kaiba also learns about Shougo's rare find and organizes a tournament, where attendance is mandatory for those who receive an invitation. Shougo and Yugi Mutou are later chased down and roughed up by Kaiba's henchmen from KaibaCorp, with Kaiba's henchmen overpowering both of them and stealing Yugi's Millennium Puzzle. Now Yugi must enter Kaiba's tournament and show Shougo that one can have both the potential and the power to become a true Duelist.

Manga influences

  • Character appearances appear closer to their manga counterparts than they did during the Toei series. Most notably, Seto Kaiba's general appearance is now very similar to his manga counterpart, his green hair and gold/light brown eyes being replaced with brown hair and light blue eyes; and Yugi Mutou/Dark Yugi's hair appears much stiffer and straighter.
  • The cards' backings are changed to match their manga counterparts. In the anime series, they had "MW" on the backing, which stood for Magic and Wizards, which was inconsistent with the dialogue as the characters called the game Duel Monsters.
  • The strategy to defeat the first "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" comes from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel 75 (Duelist Duel 16): "The Cards Bare Their Teeth", when Dark Yugi Dueled the Ventriloquist of the Dead, who was impersonating Seto Kaiba.
  • Yugi and Kaiba Dueling using Duel Disks and Kaiba joining three "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" together is partly based on their Duel from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel 100 (Duelist Duel 41): "Duel Disk Battle!" to Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel 105 (Duelist Duel 46): "No Mercy".

Katsuya Jonouchi vs. Yugi Muto

This duel is an exhibition duel to demonstrate the rules of Duel Monsters for Miho.

Jonouchi's turn
Summons "Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1" and attacks Yugi's "Hitotsu-Me Giant", destroying it (Yugi: 2000 → 1800 Life Points).
Yugi's turn
Summons "Megazowler", which attacks and destroys "Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1".
Jonouchi's turn
Summons "Curse of Dragon".

"Curse of Dragon" attacks and destroys "Dark Zora".
Kaiba's turn
Summons "Battle Ox" in Attack Position. "Curse of Dragon" is destroyed, as its ATK was lower than the DEF of "Dark Zora".
Yugi's turn
Summons "Gaia The Fierce Knight" in Attack Position.
"Gaia the Fierce Knight" attacks and destroys "Battle Ox" (Kaiba: 2000 → 1400 LP).
Kaiba's turn
Summons "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" in Attack Position.
"Blue-Eyes White Dragon" attacks and destroys "Gaia the Fierce Knight" (Yugi: 2000 → 1300 LP).

Summons "Dark Magician" in Attack Position.
Activates "Magical Hats" to cover up his monster.
Sets a card, hiding it inside one of his "Magical Hats".
Kaiba's turn
Attacks one of the hats with "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", but he has attacked Yugi's Trap Card, "Curse of Dark Cross Star", which decreases the ATK of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" by 700. ("Blue-Eyes White Dragon": 3000 → 2300 ATK).
Yugi's turn
"Dark Magician" attacks and destroys "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (Kaiba: 1400 → 1200 LP).
Kaiba's turn
Summons another "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" in Attack Position

Summons "Celtic Guardian" in Defense Position.
