As the ferry to Duelist Kingdom arrives, Yugi's first opponent is Weevil, as revenge for destroying his Exodia cards. However, Weevil, a sneaky cheater, tricks Yugi into Dueling in an arena where all his Insect cards get a power boost, pushing Yugi to his limit.

When this episode first aired in the United States on Kids WB!, it was merged with the following episode, so the Duel took place in just one episode titled "The Ultimate Great Moth". The two separate episodes were dubbed, but were only seen in other countries and on DVD and VHS until 4Kids TV aired episode 5 on November 25, 2006.

SummaryEdit

The boat to Duelist Kingdom has dropped anchor on the island. Tristan worries about what will happen if he gets caught without Star Chips, to which Tea responds not to be nervous, as he'll look more suspicious. Nevertheless, Tristan is held up by a guard, who tells him to relax. Once they're all off the boat, Joey sneezes from the cold he caught after jumping overboard in the prior episode. Yugi tells Joey that it's his fault, but Joey says that Weevil is the one to blame, and wishes he could wipe the smirk off his face.

Kemo tells the Duelists to gather at Pegasus Castle's gate for the opening ceremony. On the way up the stairs, Tea sees Bakura in the forest, after having previously seen him on the boat. Bakura disappears quickly, and Tea wonders if she's seeing things.

Pegasus emerges from the castle and greets the gathered Duelists. Yugi flashes back to Pegasus' capture of his grandfather's soul. Pegasus explains the tournament rules: Duel Monsters cards must be used, each player starts with 2000 Life Points, and direct attacks are forbidden. (In the dub, these rules aren't mentioned, and instead Pegasus talks about how great all the Duelists are.) Duelists must wager at least one Star Chip on each Duel, and whoever collects ten Star Chips within 48 hours will be allowed to enter Pegasus Castle for the finals. (In the dub, Yugi thinks that his grandfather's soul must be in Pegasus Castle.)

Later, the gang is gathered in the forest. Yugi and Joey talk about how since they only have one Star Chip each, they don't have any room for mistakes. Suddenly, the sky lights up with fireworks, signaling the start of the tournament.

Yugi is determined to battle Weevil first to settle their score. He spots him at the forest's edge, but Weevil runs away further into the forest, and Yugi chases him. As they enter the forest, a swarm of moths harass the gang. As they chase Weevil, Yugi wonders why Weevil went from so eager to Duel him to running away. He flashes back to when Weevil told him about the existence of new rules on the boat and concludes it must have something to do with that. Weevil reaches a forest clearing and stops, challenging Yugi to a Duel right there. Yugi accepts and transforms into Yami Yugi.

Suddenly, a Duel Arena pops up from the ground, labeled with the number 15. Yugi and Weevil enter the arena. Weevil comments that Yugi only has one Star Chip, meaning that if Weevil beats him, he will be eliminated. Weevil attempts to wager one of his two Star Chips, but Yugi stops him and says that it will be an all-or-nothing match - Weevil will wager two Star Chips, while Yugi will wager one as well as his life as a Duelist - his whole deck. Weevil accepts, commenting that if he knew he would get Yugi's deck, he wouldn't have thrown away Exodia. Three spectators see the Duel Arena and gather to watch, with Joey introducing Yugi to them, while calling Tea and Tristan "merry sidekicks" ("trespassers" in the dub), causing them both to collapse from embarrassment.

The Duel begins. Weevil goes first and Summons his "Killer Needle" in Attack Position. Yugi counters with "Mammoth Graveyard" and comments on how the monsters have the same 1200 attack points, before declaring an attack. However, "Mammoth Graveyard" is the only monster destroyed. Weevil reveals one of the new rules of Duelist Kingdom - monsters played in an environment they are compatible with gain a Field Power Bonus of 30% - and since the environment is part Forest, Weevil's Killer Needle was able to receive the bonus. However, Yugi laughs and tells Weevil to take a look at "Killer Needle" as the latter is also destroyed. Yugi reveals that "Mammoth Graveyard" also received a Field Power Bonus from the Wasteland environment it was played on, thus increasing both monsters' ATK and destroying them both in a Double KO. Yugi claims that he figured out the rules the moment he stepped foot in the arena, but Weevil says that Field Power isn't the only new rule that Yugi needs to be worried about.

Weevil Summons his "Hercules Beetle" in Attack Position, which powers up to 1950 ATK with the Field Power Bonus. Yugi doesn't have any monsters compatible with the field, so he instead decides to go for a combo attack. He Summons "Feral Imp" and equips it with "Horn of the Unicorn", increasing its ATK to 2000. Weevil, unfazed, attacks with "Hercules Beetle", which takes "Feral Imp"'s electric shock attack and retaliates, destroying "Feral Imp". Weevil explains that monsters with a Field Power Bonus are resistant to magic attacks, meaning that monsters can only use their innate abilities; as such, "Feral Imp"'s ATK returned to its original 1300, making it weak enough that "Hercules Beetle" could destroy it. Yugi takes the first damage of the Duel as his Life Points drop to 1350.

Yugi, now on the back foot, is forced to play defensively, Setting a monster. Weevil decides to play his signature combo, Summoning "Basic Insect" and equipping it with "Laser Cannon Armor" and "LV2 Power Boost", raising its ATK to 2150. With this power boost, "Basic Insect" is easily able to attack and destroy Yugi's Set "Griffore". Yugi Sets another monster, and Weevil says that simply destroying his defensive monsters isn't fun. He Sets "Parasite Worm", which Weevil thinks will destroy all of Yugi's monsters once he declares an attack. Yugi Sets his own card face down, which Weevil says is a Spell card that Yugi set out of desperation. (In the dub, Weevil is too busy taunting Yugi to notice his move.)

Weevil continues summoning more and more Insect monsters to fill his field - "Gokibore", "Big Insect", and "Kamakiriman". Weevil's field is now completely full of powered-up Insects, while Yugi's field is bare. Yugi draws his "Dark Magician" and, because he still can't attack due to Weevil's trap card, Sets it face-down. (In the dub, Yugi explicitly states that "Dark Magician" is his monster in order to entice Weevil into attacking it.) Weevil attacks "Dark Magician" with "Basic Insect", but Yugi laughs and reveals that Weevil has fallen for his trap - he activates his "Mirror Force", reflecting the attack of "Basic Insect" back onto Weevil's monsters, destroying them all and inflicting damage to Weevil as if "Basic Insect" had attacked them. Weevil's Life Points fall to 555.

With Weevil's field wiped out, Yugi taunts Weevil, saying that him becoming Japan's champion was a fluke and that in reality, he has no skills. (In the dub, Yugi says that Weevil has used up all his monsters, to which Weevil responds that his strongest Insect is still waiting in the wings.)

Featured Duel: Yami Yugi vs. Weevil UnderwoodEdit

Monsters compatible with Forest (terrain) or Desert receive a 30% Field Power Bonus. This includes Beast, Beast-Warrior, Dinosaur, Insect, Plant, Rock and Zombie-Type monsters.

Turn 1: Weevil
Weevil draws. He then Normal Summons "Killer Needle" (1200 → 1560/1000 → 1300) in Attack Position.

Turn 2: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws. He then Normal Summons "Mammoth Graveyard" (1200 → 1560/800 → 1040) in Attack Position. "Mammoth Graveyard" attacks "Killer Needle", destroying both monsters in a Double KO.

Turn 3: Weevil
Weevil draws. He then Normal Summons "Hercules Beetle" (1500 → 1950/2000 → 2600) in Attack Position.

Turn 4: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws. He then Normal Summons "Feral Imp" (1300/1400) in Attack Position. Yugi then activates "Horn of the Unicorn", equipping it to "Feral Imp" and increasing its ATK by 700 ("Feral Imp": 1300 → 2000). "Feral Imp" attacks "Hercules Beetle". Because "Hercules Beetle" has a Field Power Bonus and it is battling a monster that has an Equip Card, the effects of "Horn of the Unicorn" are negated ("Feral Imp": 2000 → 1300). "Hercules Beetle" destroys "Feral Imp" (Yugi: 2000 → 1350 LP).

Turn 5: Weevil
Weevil passes.

Turn 6: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws. He then Sets a monster.

Turn 7: Weevil
Weevil draws. He then Normal Summons "Basic Insect" (500 → 650/700 → 910) in Attack Position. Weevil then activates "Laser Cannon Armor", equipping it to "Basic Insect" and increasing its ATK and DEF by 300 ("Basic Insect": 650 → 950/910 → 1210). He then activates "Lev. 2 Power Boost", equipping it to "Basic Insect" and increasing its ATK by 1200 and its DEF by 200 ("Basic Insect": 950 → 2150/1210 → 1410). "Basic Insect" attacks and destroys Yugi's Set "Griffore" (1200/1500).

Turn 8: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws. He then Sets a monster.

Turn 9: Weevil
Weevil draws. He then Sets a card.

Turn 10: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws. He then Sets a card.

Turn 11: Weevil
Weevil draws. He then Normal Summons "Gokibore" (1200 → 1560/1400 → 1820) in Attack Position.

Turn 12: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws, then passes.

Turn 13: Weevil
Weevil draws. He then Normal Summons "Big Insect" (1200 → 1560/1500 → 1950) in Attack Position.

Turn 14: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws, then passes.

Turn 15: Weevil
Weevil draws. He then Normal Summons "Kamakiriman" (1150 → 1495/1400 → 1820) in Attack Position.

Turn 16: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws "Dark Magician" and subsequently Sets it.

Turn 17: Weevil
Weevil draws. "Basic Insect" attacks Yugi's Set "Dark Magician" (2500/2100). Yugi then activates his face-down "Mirror Force" to destroy every monster on Weevil's side of the field and inflict damage to him equal to the difference between the ATK of "Basic Insect" and the ATK of all other monsters destroyed by this effect (Weevil: 2000 → 555 LP).

Duel continues in the next episode.

NotesEdit

  • During the last step of this episode, Yami activates "Mirror Force" to reflect Weevil's "Basic Insect" attack right back to his monsters. Weevil's Life Points drop from 2000 to 555, for a net decrease of 1445 .
    • In the anime, "Mirror Force" has the ability to inflict battle damage to an opponent based on the difference between the ATK power of the reflected attack (in this case, Basic Insect's i.e. 2150) and the ATK of each of the destroyed monsters. In this episode however, applying this rule with the exact calculations would have made Weevil lose the Duel immediately, as explained by the table below:
Weevil's monster Refl. ATK Monst. ATK Damage
"Hercules Beetle" 2150 1950 200
"Basic Insect" 2150 2150 0
"Big Insect" 2150 1560 590
"Gokibore" 2150 1560 590
"Kamakiriman" 2150 1495 655
TOTAL 2035
SURPLUS 590

The total damage Weevil should have been dealt equals 2035. Yet the damage only amounted to 1445, a surplus difference of 590. One possibility is that the writers ignored the damage from either "Big Insect" or "Gokibore", in order to allow the Duel to continue.

However, there is an alternate explanation that produces a result close to the calculations shown in the episode, while factoring in all of Weevil's monsters. If we presume that the field power bonus of "Basic Insect" (150 ATK) was somehow negated by the effect of "Mirror Force", this would reduce the damage taken by Weevil by 150 per battle, reducing his total damage to 1435. This would reduce Weevil's LP from 2000 to 565, just 10 higher than the actual number shown in the episode (555).

Changes to the English dubEdit

  • In the Japanese version, when Weevil challenges Yugi to a Duel Yugi accepts, the Millennium Puzzle flashes and Yami appears. In the Dub the whole transformation sequence is added.
  • In the Japanese version, Weevil was granted sole knowledge of the Duelist Kingdom's rules because he won the Regionals. In the English version, Weevil stole the rulebook.
  • The Japanese version of the episode ends with Yugi's successful move. The dub version ends with Weevil gloating.
  • The artwork of the card "LV2 Power Boost" was changed.
  • The words "TO BE CONTINUED" is added at the end of the dub episode.

MistakesEdit

  • In the dub, "Saggi the Dark Clown" is shown instead of "Kamakiriman".
  • In the English dub, "Hercules Beetle" is shown to have 1200 Attack Points on its card when Weevil holds it up. However, when its Attack Points are shown by the counter, they are then correctly displayed as 1500. This may be due to the fact that it could have been edited directly from "Killer Needle", which actually has 1200 Attack Points.
  • In both versions, Weevil had four cards in his hand after he Normal Summoned "Kamakiriman" when he should only have three at the moment since he just played a card from his hand and the fact that Weevil still had four cards in his hand before he attacked.
