"The Ultimate Great Moth", known as "Ultimate Perfect Form - Great Moth" in the Japanese version, is the fifth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime. It first aired in Japan on May 16, 2000 and in the United States on October 20, 2001.

Yugi has squashed all but one of Weevil's monsters, but unfortunately, Weevil has saved his best for last: his "Cocoon of Evolution", that grows stronger every turn until it hatches into an unstoppable "Great Moth".

When this episode first aired in the United States on Kids WB!, it was merged with the previous episode, so the Duel took place in just one episode titled "The Ultimate Great Moth". The two separate episodes were dubbed, but were only seen in other countries and on DVD and VHS until 4Kids TV aired the episodes separately on December 2 and December 9, 2006.

Summary

Yugi has just turned the tables in his Duel against Weevil, having used his "Mirror Force" trap card to destroy all of Weevil's monsters and reduce his Life Points to 555, while Yugi still has his ace "Dark Magician" on the field. However, Mai arrives at the Duel Arena and says that despite his impressive play, Yugi still only has a slight lead, and the real battle is only just getting started. Tea is angered at Mai's arrogance.

Weevil proclaims that he is now taking the Duel seriously and Sets his "Larvae Moth" face down. He hopes that Yugi will attack him and trigger his "Parasite Worm" Trap, destroying all of Yugi's monsters. However, Yugi activates his Spell, "Monster Recovery", returning his "Dark Magician" and Set "Torike" to his hand, then shuffling his hand back into his Deck and re-drawing five new cards. He Summons "Kuriboh" in Attack Position and uses it to attack, triggering Weevil's "Parasite Worm", which destroys "Kuriboh" and inflicts damage to Yugi equal to its ATK. Yugi's Life Points drop to 1050.

However, Weevil says that this was all part of his plan, as he wanted Yugi to recall his monsters so that Yugi wouldn't attack his "Larvae Moth". He Flip Summons it and equips it with "Cocoon of Evolution". "Larvae Moth" becomes enshrouded in the thick cocoon as Mai comments that Weevil is finally showing his true abilities. Weevil explains that "Larvae Moth" will evolve while inside the "Cocoon" - and in five turns, it will turn into the "Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth", and when it does it will become unstoppable. Yugi resolves to destroy the "Cocoon" before that happens, but Weevil says it won't be easy - the Forest Field Power Bonus has raised the DEF of the "Cocoon" all the way up to 2600.

Yugi summons "Gaia The Fierce Knight" and attempts to attack the "Cocoon", but since the ATK of "Gaia" is only 2300, the attack is repelled. Yugi's Life Points fall to 750. Mai tells the gang that no one has ever beaten the "Cocoon of Evolution" combo and wonders what Yugi will do. (In the dub, Mai comments on how the gang's cheerleading isn't helping Yugi in the Duel one bit.)

Weevil tells Yugi that while the "Cocoon" is on the field, he can't play any other cards. On his next turn, Yugi, unable to break the Cocoon, is forced to simply Set "Beaver Warrior" and end his turn, as the "Moth" keeps evolving. With only one turn left before the "Moth" finishes evolving, Yugi begins to lose hope, but Joey tells him to stay focused and "get fired up". Yugi hears this and figures out a plan to attack Weevil's "Cocoon". He gives a smile and a thumbs-up to Joey, which stuns Mai, as she believed that the "lame cheers" of Yugi's friends weren't helping him in the Duel. Tea taunts Mai, as the latter wonders if Yugi really did find a way out of his situation.

Yugi summons his "Curse of Dragon" and declares a combo attack with his "Burning Land" Spell card. He attacks with "Curse of Dragon", and although Weevil believes the attack futile due to "Curse of Dragon"'s mere 2000 ATK, Yugi reveals that his target was not the "Cocoon" but the Forest field itself. The attack is successful, and the Forest field is completely burned away, negating the "Cocoon"'s Field Power Bonus and returning its DEF back to its original 2000. Yugi then attacks the "Cocoon" with "Gaia" and destroys it.

However, Weevil chuckles and reveals that despite Yugi stopping the evolution process early, "Larvae Moth" still evolved into a creature strong enough to defeat Yugi. He summons his Stage 4 "Great Moth", who has an Attack power of 2600 even without the Field Power Bonus. Mai comments that the presence of "Great Moth" gives Weevil an overwhelming advantage and wonders what Yugi will do now. (In the dub, she instead notices that the gang isn't cheering anymore, thinking that "Great Moth" must have shut them up.)

Weevil orders "Great Moth" to take flight, with Yugi wondering why Weevil would attack from the sky. Weevil thinks to himself that none of Yugi's monsters can attack "Great Moth" while it's in flight, and plans to attack the earthbound "Gaia" on the next turn. Yugi activates his "Polymerization" Spell, but Weevil ignores it and orders his "Great Moth" to attack with "Moth Hurricane", declaring that it will wipe out all land-based monsters in one attack. Weevil thinks that "Gaia" is destroyed, however Yugi reveals that his "Polymerization" fused "Gaia" with "Curse of Dragon" before its destruction, Fusion Summoning "Gaia the Dragon Champion", whose ATK stands at 2600, enough to combat "Great Moth".

However, Weevil cackles as "Gaia" begins to lose ATK points. Yugi realizes that "Great Moth"'s attack caused poisonous pollen to spread throughout the air, poisoning "Gaia" and causing it to lose its strength. Yugi draws and subsequently activates "Makiu, the Magical Mist", which washes away the poisonous pollen, but the damage has been done. The ATK of "Gaia" has fallen from 2600 to 1900. Weevil orders "Great Moth" to attack "Gaia" with "Moth Burning Death Tornado", which destroys "Gaia" and leaves Yugi with an empty field and just 50 Life Points left.

Mai says that the Duel is over and that Yugi fought well. She says that his opponent was just too strong for him and that you can't win a Duel with friendship or hope alone. Tea says that there must be a way for Yugi to win, and Joey says there is, but he doesn't know because he's not a strong enough Duelist. (In the dub, Joey instead asks if they could trade Mai in for Life Points.) Suddenly, Tristan notices that despite Yugi's dire situation, he still has a smile on his face.

Yugi laughs and asks Weevil when he is happiest as a Duelist. He answers his own question: when a Duel has gone exactly as planned, and now victory is assured. (In the dub, Yugi instead tells Weevil that it will be tough for him to accept losing a Duel, especially after cheating.) Yugi reveals that "Gaia" was a ruse and that Weevil has played right into his hands, bringing out his "Summoned Skull". Weevil is relieved to see that "Summoned Skull" has only 2500 ATK, not enough to defeat "Great Moth", but Yugi isn't done. He reveals that the effect of "Makiu" from earlier had covered the body of "Great Moth" in water, which powers up the electrical attack of "Summoned Skull" by 1000 points. Yugi orders "Summoned Skull" to attack with "Magic Lightning", destroying "Great Moth" and dropping Weevil's Life Points to 0.

Mai is impressed at the way Yugi Duels, thinking that he had no chance of beating Weevil coming in. Yugi claims both of Weevil's Star Chips, giving him a total of three, while Joey claims his Dueling Gauntlet. Weevil becomes the first Duelist eliminated from the tournament. Yugi thinks that his new Star Chips put him one step closer to challenging Pegasus.

Featured Duel: Yami Yugi vs. Weevil Underwood

Duel continues from the previous episode.

Weevil Underwood has 555 LP remaining and one Set card.
Yami Yugi has 1350 LP remaining and controls "Dark Magician" (2500/2100) and "Torike" (1200/600) Set and no other Set cards.

Turn 17: Weevil
Weevil Sets "Larvae Moth".

Turn 18: Yami Yugi
Yugi activates the Magic Card "Monster Recovery", returning his hand and all monsters he controls to his Deck and drawing five cards. He returns his Set "Dark Magician" and "Torike" from his field and four unknown cards from his hand to his Deck. Yugi Normal Summons "Kuriboh" in Attack Position. "Kuriboh" attacks Weevil's Set monster, but Weevil's Set Trap Card "Parasite Worm" activates as Yugi declared an attack, destroying all monsters he controls and inflicting damage to Yugi equal to their ATK. "Kuriboh" is destroyed (Yugi: 1350 → 1050 LP).

Turn 19: Weevil
Weevil Flip Summons "Larvae Moth" in Defense Position. Weevil equips "Larvae Moth" with "Cocoon of Evolution" via its own effect. The ATK and DEF of the equipped "Larvae Moth" become equal to that of "Cocoon of Evolution" ("Larvae Moth": 650 → 0/520 → 2000 → 2600). Weevil can Special Summon "Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth" after five of his turns have passed by Tributing "Larvae Moth" equipped with "Cocoon of Evolution".

Turn 20: Yami Yugi
Yugi Normal Summons "Gaia The Fierce Knight" (2300/2100) in Attack Position. "Gaia" attacks "Larvae Moth", but the attack fails (Yugi: 1050 → 750 LP).

Turn 21: Weevil
Weevil passes. Two of Weevil's turns have passed since he equipped "Larvae Moth" with "Cocoon of Evolution", so he can Special Summon "Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth" in three turns.

Turn 22: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws "Beaver Warrior". Yugi Sets "Beaver Warrior".

Turn 23: Weevil
Weevil passes. Three of Weevil's turns have passed since he equipped "Larvae Moth" with "Cocoon of Evolution", so he can Special Summon "Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth" in two turns.

Turn 24: Yami Yugi
Yugi passes.

Turn 25: Weevil
Weevil passes. Four of Weevil's turns have passed since he equipped "Larvae Moth" with "Cocoon of Evolution", so he can Special Summon "Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth" in one turn.

Turn 26: Yami Yugi
Yugi Normal Summons "Curse of Dragon" in Attack Position. Yugi activates the Magic Card "Burning Land", destroying the Field ("Larvae Moth": 0/2600 → 2000). "Gaia" attacks and destroys "Larvae Moth". As four of Weevil's turns had passed since he equipped "Larvae Moth" with "Cocoon of Evolution" and it was destroyed, he Special Summons "Great Moth" (2600/2500) in Attack Position.

Turn 27: Weevil
Weevil orders "Great Moth" to take flight, preventing it from attacking this turn and preventing land-bound monsters from attacking it.

Turn 28: Yami Yugi
Yugi activates the Magic Card "Polymerization", fusing a designated monster with another. He fuses "Gaia The Fierce Knight" with "Curse of Dragon" to Fusion Summon "Gaia the Dragon Champion" in Attack Position, though Weevil does not notice this.

Turn 29: Weevil
"Great Moth" attacks all land-based monsters and destroys Yugi's Set "Beaver Warrior" (1200/1500). At this point Weevil realizes Yugi has activated "Polymerization". As "Great Moth" attacked, its poisonous scales "Great Moth" continually decrease the ATK of "Gaia the Dragon Champion" ("Gaia the Dragon Champion": 2600 → 1900/2300).

Turn 30: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws "Makiu, the Magical Mist". Yugi activates the Spell Card "Makiu, the Magical Mist", dampening the air. This washes away the poisonous scales of "Great Moth" and stops the ATK of "Gaia the Dragon Champion" from decreasing further.

Turn 31: Weevil
"Great Moth" attacks and destroys "Gaia the Dragon Champion" (Yugi: 750 → 50 LP).

Turn 32: Yami Yugi
Yugi Normal Summons "Summoned Skull" in Attack Position. The effect of "Makiu" increases the ATK of "Summoned Skull" by 1000 ("Summoned Skull": 2500 → 3500/1200). "Summoned Skull" attacks and destroys "Great Moth" (Weevil: 555 → 0 LP).
