In his first Duel on the island, Joey Duels Mai Valentine, a professional Duelist who uses "Harpie Lady" as her ace monster. But even more dangerous than Mai's "Harpies" is her ability to predict every card she will draw.

SummaryEdit

Pegasus is sitting in his castle's dining room, alone. He wonders if Yugi will really be able to battle his way to him. (In the dub, he remarks about how the Duels will allow the strongest to rise to the top, while the unskilled will fall by the wayside.)

Meanwhile, after Yugi's victory over Weevil, Joey is looking for someone to battle. As he stares at the ocean, he reminisces about a trip he took to the beach with Serenity to the beach as young kids. Joey promised Serenity that even though their parents were soon getting divorced, he would still find a way to show her the beach again. Now, he resolves to keep that promise by winning the tournament and its prize money.

Mai flaunts her victory.

Suddenly, Téa hears sounds of Dueling close by. Several Duel Arenas are shown, and Yugi remarks that everyone has started Dueling now. Joey resolves to join in the fun, and Tristan says that he should start off by finding the weakest Duelist he can, which embarrasses Joey. (In the dub, Tristan instead reminds Joey that he would be eliminated should he lose a single Duel.) Yugi also tells him to consider which field he wants to battle on, and Joey says that since his deck contains mostly Warrior and Beast-Warrior monsters, the Sogen grassland, where the gang currently is, would be ideal.

Nearby, Mai Valentine has just defeated an unnamed Duelist and tells him to hurry up and hand over his Star Chips. The Duelist protests, wondering how Mai could tell which cards she had without looking at them. Mai responds that it's a secret (in the dub, she tells him that she's psychic). Joey sees that Mai is already up to four Star Chips. Mai greets Yugi, commenting on his three Star Chips, and says she wants to Duel right now, but challenges Joey instead of Yugi. Mai explains that her strategy is to take out the weaker Duelists first and collect their Star Chips. Téa urges Yugi to take Joey's place and battle Mai instead, but Yugi says that it's Joey's choice, not his. Joey says that if he were to refuse Mai's challenge, every time he sees the beautiful view, he'll be reminded of how much of a coward he was. (In the dub, this is replaced by a gag where Joey talks half-heartedly about Solomon's training of him.) Joey accepts the challenge.

Joey wagers his only Star Chip, which Mai matches. Joey realizes that the field isn't just the Grassland field that powers up his Warriors - it also contains Mountain and Wasteland parts. Yugi reminds Joey that his monsters will still have an advantage in the Grassland. Joey asks Mai why she entered the tournament, to which Mai responds that she wants to use the prize money on all sorts of luxuries. Joey calls her attitude pathetic, and says that he needs to Duel to protect those he loves. Yugi urges Joey to show Mai what he's fighting for.

The Duel begins. Joey goes first and Summons his "Masaki the Legendary Swordsman", which receives a Field Power Bonus from the grassland. Suddenly, Mai closes her eyes and picks her first card without looking - which turns out to be "Harpie Lady", which receives a Field Power Bonus from the mountain. (In the dub, Mai claims that she "divined" her card and continues this psychic act throughout the Duel.) Joey attacks "Harpie Lady" with "Masaki", but Yugi exclaims that it won't work, because flying monsters have magical resistance against land monsters. This negates the Field Power Bonus of "Masaki", and "Harpie Lady" is able to destroy it, knocking Joey's Life Points down to 1410. Mai Sets a face-down card without looking again.

Joey is rattled by Mai's card trick, with Mai thinking that she has thrown Joey off his game. Joey summons "Tiger Axe", going for a Double KO, but Yugi reminds Joey that "Tiger Axe" is still a land-based monster and loses its Field Power Bonus against the flying "Harpie Lady", which results in "Tiger Axe" being destroyed. Joey's Life Points drop to 1020. Mai Sets another face-down card. (In the dub, she reveals that this card is an Equip Spell which will help her defeat Joey's next card in a single turn.)

Joey Sets a face-down monster. Mai equips "Harpie Lady" with "Cyber Shield", which increases its ATK to 2190 and allows it to easily destroy Joey's face-down "Kojikocy". Joey continues to worry more about how Mai is playing her cards without looking than how he can win the Duel. Yugi tries to support Joey and snap him out of it, but Mai snaps at the gang and tells them that if their support had any impact on the Duel, Joey wouldn't be losing. Mai tells Joey that if he continues to rely on his friends, he'll never be a champion. She says that the only person a Duelist can trust is himself. Joey grimaces, appearing to take Mai's words personally.

Yugi transforms into Yami Yugi and asks Joey a riddle: "What can be seen but remains unseen?" Mai laughs and wonders how that will help Joey at all in the Duel. Joey flashes back to when he posed that riddle to Yugi, with the answer being "friendship", but he thinks that won't be enough to help him now. He thinks of Serenity and how, by losing, he's a bad brother to her. (In the dub, the riddle is removed and instead Mai wonders why Joey would ever take advice from one of his fellow competitors. Joey resolves to stop listening to Mai's "nonsense" and start using his head.)

Joey begins to cry and closes his eyes, when suddenly, he smells the aroma of perfume - not just one, but several different kinds. He announces that he's figured out Mai's card trick, revealing that Mai sprayed each of her cards with different perfumes, so that she could know which card is which, even without looking at them. He concludes that this is the answer to the riddle - the cards can be seen, but the odor remains unseen. Mai is astonished that an amateur like Joey could see through her "aroma tactics". Joey calls Mai a cheater and says that he won't be fooled anymore. Mai says that even with her trick figured out, Joey will still never be able to beat her.

With his mind clear, Joey summons his "Baby Dragon" in Defense Position. Mai laughs and says that wimpy card will never be able to beat "Harpie Lady" - but since destroying it won't damage Joey, Mai activates "Elegant Egotist", which summons two identical copies of "Harpie Lady" to Mai's field. Since Mai activated "Elegant Egotist", she can't attack on that turn. Joey is almost ready to give in, but Yugi reminds him that by powering up a single "Harpie Lady" with many Spells, Mai's strategy has a fatal flaw, which Joey identifies as "Harpie Lady" being the only Monster in Mai's Deck. Joey flashes back to when Yugi gave him "Time Wizard" on the boat to Duelist Kingdom, saying that it would help him out in an emergency.

Joey realizes that "Time Wizard" isn't in his hand, so he'll need to draw it before Mai destroys "Baby Dragon". Through a stroke of luck, he manages to draw "Time Wizard" and activates it straight away. "Time Wizard" activates its "Time Magic", which causes a thousand years to pass in an instant. This causes "Baby Dragon" to grow old and age into the powerful "Thousand Dragon", as well as cause Mai's "Harpie Ladies" to grow old and weak and lose their beauty, returning their attack points to their original 1300. "Thousand Dragon" attacks with "Thousand Nose Breath", wiping out Mai's entire field and reducing her Life Points to 0.

Joey tells Mai that some things don't change, even after a thousand years - and that's what can be seen, but remains unseen. Yugi remarks that what Joey was fighting for, compared to Mai, led Joey to claim victory.

Featured Duel: Joey Wheeler vs. Mai ValentineEdit

Monsters compatible with Mountain, Forest or Meadow receive a 30% Field Power Bonus. This includes Beast, Beast-Warrior, Dragon, Insect, Plant, Thunder, Warrior and Winged Beast-Type monsters.

Turn 1: Joey
Joey Normal Summons "Masaki the Legendary Swordsman" (1100 → 1430/1100 → 1430) in Attack Position.

Turn 2: Mai
Mai Normal Summons "Harpie Lady" (1300 → 1690/1400 → 1820) in Attack Position. "Harpie Lady" attacks "Masaki". "Masaki" then loses its Field Power Bonus since it is an EARTH monster battling a WIND monster ("Masaki": 1430 → 1100/1430 → 1100). "Harpie Lady" destroys "Masaki" (Joey: 2000 → 1410 LP). Mai then Sets a card.

Turn 3: Joey
Joey Normal Summons "Tiger Axe" (1300 → 1690/1100 → 1430) in Attack Position. "Tiger Axe" attacks "Harpie Lady". Because "Tiger Axe" is an EARTH monster battling a WIND monster, "Tiger Axe" loses its Field Power Bonus ("Tiger Axe": 1690 → 1300/1430 → 1100). "Harpie Lady" destroys "Tiger Axe" (Joey: 1410 → 1020 LP).

Turn 4: Mai
Mai draws. She then Sets a card ("Cyber Shield").

Turn 5: Joey
Joey draws. He then Sets a monster.

Turn 6: Mai
Mai activates her face-down "Cyber Shield", equipping it to "Harpie Lady" and increasing its ATK and DEF by 500 ("Harpie Lady": 1690 → 2190/1820 → 2320). "Harpie Lady" attacks and destroys Joey's Set "Kojikocy" (1500 → 1950/1200 → 1560).

Turn 7: Joey
Joey draws. He then Normal Summons "Baby Dragon" (1200/700) in Defense Position.

Turn 8: Mai
Mai activates her face-down "Elegant Egotist" to turn one "Harpie Lady" into three "Harpie Lady Sisters" (1300 → 2190/1400 → 2320 for newly Summoned "Harpie Ladies") in Attack Position. None of Mai's monsters can attack during this turn due to "Elegant Egotist's" effect.

Turn 9: Joey
Joey draws "Time Wizard" and subsequently Normal Summons it (500/400) in Attack Position. Joey then activates the effect of "Time Wizard" and succeeds at the effect. Since the effect of "Time Wizard" was activated successfully, "Baby Dragon" is turned into "Thousand Dragon" (2400/2000). Doing this also ages Mai's "Harpie Ladies", reducing their ATK to their original value ("Harpie Ladies": 2190 → 1300/2320). "Thousand Dragon" attacks and destroys all three "Harpie Ladies" (Mai: 2000 → 0 LP).
